4 Read A Treasure Chest of Memories and choose the best answer to each question. A Treasure Chest of Memories 1 How will life be different in twenty years? Computers will probably be smaller than they are now. Regular telephones may not even exist. Your favorite TV shows might be long gone. Will you even remember what life is like right now? One way to remember is to make a time capsule. A time capsule is a container full of special items. This container is buried or hidden for a number of years. After many years you open it. It is like a treasure chest of memories. 2 A time capsule container must be very sturdy. It should not break easily. Its purpose is to protect what s inside. It has to keep the contents in good shape for a long time. Some containers are stored above ground. Others are buried underground. Containers above ground should be sealed tightly. This keeps the container from being opened too early. Underground time capsules have to be waterproof. This keeps the special items inside from getting ruined by water. 3 You can put many special things in a time capsule. Such things must be able to fit in the time capsule. Some things may be pages from a diary. You may put in special photographs. Other items may be a newspaper article or a special toy. Also, you should put a date on the items. Dates help you remember how old you were in a photo. They help you remember how old you were on a special trip. The things you put in a time capsule should be special to you. This is the most important thing. A special toy may remind you of the person who gave it to you. The toy may also remind you of the games you used to play with it. 4 Next you must choose the best place for a time capsule. This can be tricky. Even your own front yard may not be a good place. This is because your family might move to a new home. It would not be okay for you to dig up someone else s yard. So think about other places. A public garden might be a good place. An empty field out in the country might be a good place. Inside your home may be a good place. Be sure to label your time capsule. A label could be like the one in the box below. Jake s Time Capsule: Do not open until the year. G R E E N A P P L E E D U C A T I O N A L P R O D U C T S Page 5
5 This way your time capsule won t get lost in a pile of boxes. 5 A time capsule is made of a sturdy container. The container holds special things. Plus, the container is put in a special location. Many years later, it is time to open the time capsule. You may forget what was inside. You will be very surprised when you open it. Each special thing in the container will bring back a memory. It could be a memory of your fun childhood. You could remember fun family vacations. Or you may remember how your favorite sports team won the championship game. A time capsule helps you remember what life was like when you were a kid. These memories may not be important to other people. But they will be a treasure to you.
