29 Student Copy Grade 1 Screening Passage 1 Rats The sun sets. The night is still. The people are all at home. Soon animals will come out. Some animals can see at night. You may see a fox. They come out to find food. Rats come out at night too. They will also look for food. They must watch out for the fox. The rats are small. But the fox can see them. It has good eyes. The rats are fast. But so is the fox. It can catch them. The rats stick together. They are safe in their home. The little rats have to stay in. The big rats go out. It is hard to stay in. There is so much to see. The little rats want to go out! One little rat is brave. She sticks her head out. There is a lot to see. And the fox is not there. Then she brings her head back in. She goes back to the others. The little rats hear all about it Theodore J. Christ and colleagues

His dad always tricks him. One time Dad made their truck stink. Then Mom got in the truck. She gave the air a sniff. The stink was strong. It was there a long time. Mom did not like the prank. Another time Dad hid under the bed. Jim came to find him. Dad sprang from under the bed. He gave Jim a scare. That was a bad trick too. It was not fun at all! Jim did not want to do that. Jim could not think of a prank. Good pranks are hard to think of. A joke could be better. They are always fun. Jim heard a joke from his friend. He told his mom. She said it was great. They are too little. It would not be safe. But his dad can use the saw. He cuts a hole in the top. But there is still not much light. They need another fix. The house is in the shade. They need to move it. They tug the house. It is hard to move. The grass is wet. Their socks get damp. Jim slips in the mud. Tom gives Jim a hand up. They move the house bit by bit. She told him to come and play. First Nick asked his mom. She said he could go over! Nick ran to Jen. There was a bush. He took a hop over it. Nick and Jen love to play together. They spun around in a big ring. They spun so fast! Jen hit the grass with a crash. Good thing the grass was soft! She could not spin any more. She looked up at Nick. He gave her a grin. Then he sat next to her. Nick and Jen are great friends Theodore J. Christ and colleagues
