3 This Guide meets the following English Language Arts Common Core State Standards: R.L.3.1 R.L.3.2 R.L.3.10
4 Part One: Teaching Notes
5 Suggestions for Use: In order to analyze plot, understand characters, appreciate illustrations, and uncover the moral or message of folktales, students must first have a good understanding of the characteristics of all folktales and the subtle characteristics of the five types of folktales: legend, myth, tall tale, fable, & fairy tale. Use these forms to help your students recognize the similarities between all folktales and the small differences that distinguish each of the five types of folktales. This helps to build a strand of consistency that unites a Folktale Unit involving several texts while encouraging the close reading necessary to meet additional Common Core State Standards.
6 Similarities between ALL Folktales = Told over and over again orally before ever being written down No known original author Exist in every culture Five Types of Folktales = Legend Myth Tall Tale Fable Fairy Tale Suggested Texts= Legend Legend of the Bluebonnet Myth Yi and the Ten Suns Tall Tale Paul Bunyan Fable The Tortoise and the Hare Fairy Tale Mufaro s Beautiful Daughters
