Mapping and GIS
Maps and Humanitarian assistance
Geographic coordinate system A geographic coordinate system is a coordinate system that enables every location on the Earth to be specified by a set of numbers or letters. The coordinates are often chosen such that one of the numbers represents vertical position, and two or three of the numbers represent horizontal position. A common choice of coordinates is latitude, longitude and elevation
Geographic coordinate system Greenwich meridian Latitude Equator Longitude Coordinates expressed in: Degrees, Minutes and Seconds: 36º N 24º E Or Degrees (decimal) : N E

The Babylonian system of mathematics was sexagesimal (base-60) Although it is no longer used for general computation, the sexagesimal system is still used to measure angles, geographic coordinates and time. In fact, both the circular face of a clock and the sphere of a globe owe their divisions to a 4,000- year-old numeric system of the Babylonians The Babylonians were able to make great advances in mathematics because the number 60 is a Highly composite number, having divisors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 and 60, facilitating calculations with fractions. The Sumerians and Babylonians were pioneers in this respect. 60

GIS definition A Geographic Information Systems (GIS) links locational (spatial) and database (tabular) information and enables a person to visualize patterns, relationships, and trends. This process gives and entirely new perspective to data analysis that cannot be seen in a table or list format. A GIS is an integrated collection of: People Methods Software Data: spatial data and tabular related information Hardware: supporting infrastructure used to visualize and analyze spatial relationships A GIS uses geography as its organizing principle. Exemples: MapInfo, ArcGIS, GoogleEarth, Car GPS
