Oceanology International, London, March 2012 Ocean Observation & Forecasting programme An African Network of Offshore Real-Time Metocean Stations Valérie QUINIOU-RAMUS, Rémi ESTIVAL (TOTAL S.A., EP/DEV/TEC/GEO) OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Background Feedback from our past experience with ocean and spill drift models : Lack of accuracy of these models; Lack of in-situ data for calibration or validation of, or assimilation into these models; Consequently, the metocean and environment teams in TOTAL have developed together a road map for developing and improving the service. 2 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Three axes of research and development Monitoring, in-situ observations Modelling: current/wind + oil spill drift Integration into an operational tool 3 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Modelling: current/wind + oil spill drift Creation Metocean data Integration Metocean model Oil spill drift model 4 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Monitoring, in-situ observations Drifters, deployable when a spill occurs Real-time monitoring of currents throughout the water column Monitoring river plume with HF radars (e.g. Congo river) Making better use of metocean stations onboard offshore platforms Objective: use of in-situ data into numerical models, for validation, calibration or assimilation. 5 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Public remote access to metocean data will generally: Improve weather and ocean hindcasts and forecasts, which will be beneficial to all Oil & Gas operations in Africa, Help feed a database for future O&G developments; Enable design checks after ~1 year of operation; Serve as a black box in case of an incident which could be due to environment; Help feed or validate ocean and oil spill drift forecast in case of emergency; Contribute to the international effort of monitoring the oceans in the long term (operational oceanography, climate change, etc.); Encourage capacity building in Africa by supporting development and maintenance of technical solutions to reach objectives Angola Dalia = pilot project 6 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Project Objectives Objectives: Collect and archive in real-time meteorological / oceanographic ("metocean") data from TOTAL platforms in the Gulf of Guinea. Develop the facilities to give public and remote access to those data. Start with Total-owned data and potentially extend to other Oil and Gas companies data. Anemometer on Amenam Kpono (Nigeria) Realtime wind speed(blue) and direction(green) from Dalia wind sensor (Angola) 7 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Current state of progress Started in September «metocean» platforms in the Gulf of Guinea 4 are «already available remotely in real-time»: 4 weather stations 1 ocean buoy (Wave buoy + ADCP) 10 platforms should be available in October 2012: 10 weather stations 3-4 ocean stations «Already available in real-time» = inside TOTAL 8 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Data dissimination: The project plans to make metocean data available publicly through: Météo France SIMORC Others 9 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Data dissemination: Météo France The project plans to transfer the real-time data to Météo France and the GTS Meteo France is the French weather service company GTS= Global Telecommunication system is the communications and data management component of the World Meteorological Organization An extranet will be developed with: real-time data Quality Control (QC) information 10 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Data dissemination: Météo France We are currently: Testing and setting data protocol with Météo France to send data to the GTS Setting requirements for the extranet Defining agreement with Météo France The extranet will be available to anyone on demand in OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Data dissemination :SIMORC SIMORC will host the historical data: SIMORC stands for System of Industry Metocean data for the Offshore and Research Communities The aim of the project is to deliver an operational service on the Internet, featuring a searchable central index and a database of the metocean data sets, collected by the oil & gas[ ] Historical data will be available on SIMORC: Free for the scientific community Extra QC 12 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

Data dissemination: Others OceanSAfrica OceanSAfrica is a UCT, DEA, CSIR, South African weather services and SAEON joint project that should be operational by sea.uct.ac.za/.../operational-oceanography-initiative/ OceanSAfrica aims to make the knowledge and capabilities of the marine science community useful to society, by providing information on: the current state of the ocean, the current state of the ecosystem and the future state of the ocean and marine ecosystems. MyOcean & Coriolis MyOcean ( European Commission project whose objective is to define and to set capacity for ocean monitoring and forecasting. CORIOLIS is a Data Assembly Center within the scope MyOcean Others cooperations are possible! 13 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012

14 - OI, London, 15 Mar 2012 Thank you for your attention
