Unmanned Aerial Systems Gulf Region Stakeholder Workshop July 17-18, 2007 Mississippi State University Starkville, Mississippi

List of Measurement Requirements Fill gaps in measurements of surface and atmospheric temperature, humidity, pressure, winds in and around Tropical Cyclones Monitoring wind and thermodynamic fields Three dimensional wind structure, including at or near the surface

List of Outcome Requirements Improved hurricane track forecasting Improved hurricane structure and intensity analysis and forecasting

Technology Requirements In Situ High altitude (minimum 45K) platform that can release (possibly 100) dropsondes per day Multiple platforms (possibly including multiple staging areas) available to meet needs for up to 10-day missions Real-time transmission of data to operational centers Endurance 10,000 miles coverage per day Flexibility in operations for HALE

Technology Requirements Remote Sensing Doppler radar on UAS (with scatterometer) Doppler wind lidar on UAS on HALE and LALE Real-time transmission of data to operational center Remote sensed moisture and atmospheric and surface temperature Fly at 65K ft. or survive hurricane forces Aerosol composition and size distribution High resolution (10 s of meters or better) thermodynamic and wind structure from aircraft to surface Sea state and sea height

Technology Requirements In Situ LALE proven survivability for at least 12 hours in the hurricane environment at as low as 300 meters Required observations temperature, moisture, pressure, wind at temporal sampling of 10 Hz Ability to monitor the hurricane core continuously

Longer Term Desires Plug-and-play pods that can cross platforms Ability to survive landing on water for LALE

Requirements - UOV Sea temperature, current, salinity surface to hours ahead of projected storm track at a horizontal spatial resolution on the order of 10 km Sea surface temperature within the core Wind, pressure, air temperature, humidity at 10 Hz at surface Ability to conduct vertical profiles with lowered acoustic doppler current profiler Atmospheric profiling capability Real-time satellite communications at high bandwidth

Requirements Non-Hurricane Chemistry Particle capture system Radiometer up and down, viz and IR Isokinetic inlet system for gas capture Required observations temperature, moisture, pressure, wind at temporal sampling of 10 Hz Modular capability for standard chemistry sensing packages Satellite communications capabilities

Requirements Non-Hurricane Ecosystem Still imagery at 20 Hz sampling rate Particle collection Hyperspectral remote sensing higher resolution and able to target specific location and avoid cloudcover issues Continuous monitoring for up to several months Plume tracking, oil spill monitoring, etc. Bathymetry data for rapid changes in bottom characteristics Nutrient measurements Impact of land use changes on coastal ecosystems

Requirements Non-Hurricane Hydrologic Sea height and state as backup for gauging stations Synthetic aperture radar

Requirements Non-Hurricane Search and locate post-disaster
