1 Chapter 11: Hurricanes The Atmosphere: An Introduction to Meteorology, 12 th Lutgens Tarbuck Lectures by: Heather Gallacher, Cleveland State University! Hurricanes: " Hurricanes are intense centers of low pressure. " They form over tropical/subtropical oceans. " These storms have intense convective activity and rotary circulation and can have wind speeds in excess of 119 kph. " They are usually km in diameter, form between 5 and 20 latitude and have a steep pressure gradient.! Hurricanes are called typhoons in the NW Pacific and cyclones in the SW Pacific and Indian Oceans.! Eye wall 1

2 ! Hurricanes: " Hurricanes are fueled by the latent heat of condensed water vapor. " Most are formed from late summer to early fall. " Sea-surface temperatures of 27 C or higher provide the necessary heat and moisture.! Hurricane formation: " Tropical disturbances, such as disorganized cloud arrays and thunderstorms, occasionally grow larger and develop strong cyclonic rotation. " Easterly waves gradually move from east to west.! Hurricane formation: " As areas within tropical disturbances get warmer, several factors help form hurricanes.! Surface pressure drops creating a region of weak low pressure and cyclonic circulation.! Higher pressure develops at the top of the storm causing an outward flow of air from the top. " If wind speeds do not reach 63 kph, it is called a tropical depression. " When winds exceed 61 kph, it becomes a tropical storm and is given a name. 2

3 ! Hurricane decay: " Decay occurs when latent heat is cut off. " A hurricane moves over cooler water or land. " When large scale flow aloft is unfavorable, they diminish in intensity.! The Saffir-Simpson scale was established to rank the intensities of hurricanes based on pressure, winds, and storm surge. 3

4 ! Storm surge: " A storm surge is a dome of water km across. " It occurs near where the eye makes landfall. " Water is piled up from surface winds.! Wind damage: " High winds turn objects into missiles. " High winds can also spawn tornadoes. 4

5 ! Heavy rains and inland flooding: " The torrential rains often cause flooding.! Flash floods and mudflows often result.! The accurate observations needed are sometimes difficult to obtain.! Winds aloft are stronger than those at the surface.! In 1997, the Global Positioning System (GPS) dropwindsonde was developed. " This instrument measures pressure, humidity, wind speed, and direction as it falls through a hurricane. 5

6 ! Role of satellites: " Satellites make it easy to detect the development of hurricanes and monitor its movements. " They are remote sensors, however, and cannot measure wind speeds accurately.! Aircraft reconnaissance: " Specially instrumented aircraft fly through and around a hurricane.! They provide snapshot data.! Because range is a problem, measurements cannot be taken until a hurricane is relatively close to shore. 6

7 ! Radar and data buoys: " Radar:! When a hurricane is near land (approximately 320 km from the coast), it is monitored by Doppler weather radar.! These systems measure wind speed and direction.! They can also measure precipitation.! Radar and data buoys: " VORTRAC a new hurricane tracking technique:! Vortex Objective Radar Tracking and Circulation is intended to help improve short-term warnings.! It constantly monitors all Doppler radars on coast lines.! It combines data for a better picture of the hurricane.! Radar and data buoys: " Data buoys are another method of data gathering.! They are remote, floating instrument packages.! Data buoys are in fixed locations along the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts of the United States. 7

8 ! Hurricane watches and warnings: " A hurricane watch is an announcement that conditions are possible.! It is issued 48 hours before winds are intended to reach tropical storm force. " A hurricane warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds.! It indicates that conditions are expected.! It can remain in effect when dangerously high water and waves continue.! Hurricane Forecasting! Track forecasts: " Track forecasts try to determine where the hurricane is going. 8
