6 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Document Scope and Objective The present document provides the list of the Sentinels products generated by the Copernicus Space Component (CSC) core ground segment for access by the Copernicus users. The intended readership is the European Commission as well as the Copernicus users. This first issue of the document lists the products that have been developed as part of the GMES Segments 1 & 2 and from the GMES Initial Operations programmatic phases and currently deployed in response to the EU-ESA GMES delegation agreement ([AD 1] ). Future revisions of the document will reflect evolutions of the Copernicus Space Component core products according to the change process described in [AD 1] and [AD 7] Notes: This document provides a comprehensive summary list of the product types described within the CSC System Requirements document [AD 2] and the CSC Infrastructure Architecture Document [AD 3] These documents shall take precedence in case of any conflicting or inconsistent information. The current version of this document fully covers Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-5P. Future revisions of the document will include details covering Sentinel-4, Sentinel-5 and Sentinel-6 to be elaborated jointly with EUMETSAT. Page 6/18
7 1.2 Applicable documents [AD 1] Agreement on the Implementation of the Space Component of Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) between the European Union and the European Space Agency concluded on 28 February 2008 as subsequently amended on 28 January 2009 and on 15 June 2011 [AD 2] GSC Systems Requirements Document. 8 1.4 Recall of Products Generation Concept The Sentinel missions are dedicated to Copernicus. Their operations concept relies on systematic 1 data acquisition, processing and dissemination, as extensively described in [AD 3] and [AD 4] 2. The acquisition strategy can be summarized as follows: For Sentinel-1, given its limited instrument duty cycle, acquisitions are performed according to a mission background plan detailed in the High Level Operations Plan (HLOP), elaborated by ESA following users needs. An on-line version of the observation scenario is available for the public. For Sentinel-2, systematic acquisitions are performed between 56 S and 84 N over land, coastal areas as well as larger islands. For more details see the on-line description of the Sentinel-2 geographic coverage. For Sentinel-3, systematic acquisitions cover the whole globe. Details for the various instruments coverage are available on the web for SLSTR, OLCI and STM. For Sentinel-5P, systematic acquisitions over the whole globe are performed (details will be provided in future releases of the document). For Sentinel-4, systematic acquisition of Europe is performed from a geostationary orbit (details will be provided in future releases of the document). For Sentinel-5 and Sentinel-6, systematic acquistions cover the whole globe (details will be provided in future releases of the document). Regardless the observation strategy, the acquired data are automatically downlinked to the receiving stations and systematically processed to generate a set of pre-defined core products (Levels 0, 1 and 2). These core products are made available to the Copernicus users according to committed, well defined timelines ranging from near-real time to nontime-critical, available typically within 3 to 24 or 48 hours of being sensed by the satellite. Such products are listed in the following Sections. Note that additional, complementary products might be available as part of complementary infrastructure not part of the Copernicus Space Component core ground segment, like e.g. the Sentinel collaborative ground segments. However, such products are not part of the CSC baseline and therefore are not described in the present document. 1 The only exception is Sentinel-1 which can be tasked to support dedicated acquisitions over crisis areas in case of emergencies. 2 The nominal geographical coverage acquisition and data distribution scenarios are progressively achieved during the first months of the mission, according to pre-defined, mission-specific ramp-up scenarios. For each mission, data distribution schedules are made available to the public in due time at Page 8/18
9 1.5 User Products Documentation A complete Sentinel technical documentation set is made available for the users on the Sentinel On-line web site In particular, detailed products and formats descriptions are available in the Product Definition and in the Product format technical documents as referenced in [AD 3] and made available on-line in the on-line documents library. Interactive versions are available in the form of wikis on the same site as part of the Sentinel-1 Technical Guide, the Sentinel- 2 Technical Guide and the Sentinel-3 Technical Guide for OLCI, SLSTR, SYNERGY and STM. Summary descriptions of Sentinel Products are also available on-line from the Sentinel-1 User Guide, the Sentinel-2 User Guide and Sentinel-3 User Guide (for OLCI, SLSTR, SYNERGY and STM). Complete and detailed product handbooks are available from the web as: Sentinel-1 Product User Handbook, Sentinel-2 Product User Handbook, and Sentinel-3 Product User Handbook. Dedicated toolboxes, specifically developed by ESA, support users in handling the data products. Detailed information covering Sentinel-5 Precursor, Sentinel-4, Sentinel-5 and Sentinel-6 products will be progressively published in the Sentinel On-line web site in the future. 2 SENTINEL CORE USER PRODUCTS LIST The Table below provides a general overview of Sentinel core products for users, including a brief description of the products content and the threshold timeliness of availability to the Copernicus core users. The Table complements the general description provided in [AD 2] and [AD 3] by introducing an explicit entry for each product type. Page 9/18

Sentinel core products are made available from the CSC ground segment infrastructure primarily to the Copernicus Services (with committed timelines), and to other user typologies with intended timelines, see [AD 6]. Timeliness definitions are available in [AD 2]. 4 Timeliness is referred here as the elapsed time after data downlink. For near real time production, timeliness after downlink is compliant with availability of user products at pick-up points (i.e. the user entry point for data access) within 3h from sensing. In case multicast or broadcast products dissemination are used, this dissemination timeliness starts from the product availability at pick- up point for the re-dissemination system. The timeliness is applying to any satellite downloaded data. Near real time products are available at the acquisition station pick-up point from a rolling archive sized for one month of data and at the PACs within 24h (see [AD 3] ). Page 10/18
