3 OSI SAF Sea Ice Product Suite Changes introduced on 15/09/2015 : Global Sea Ice Edge and Sea Ice Type - a change of the algorithm to improve transition between seasons as well as robustness against sensor degradation. Low Resolution Sea Ice Drift ingesting AMSR-2 data in addition to SSMI/S and ASCAT as input to the algorithm. Global Sea Ice Concentration providing uncertainty estimates in the product. 3 EUM/TSS/VWG/15/ /10/2015

6 EUMETSAT Plans: EPS Second Generation From 2021 onwards, design for > 20 years of operation Constellation of Metop-SG-A satellite: imaging (Metimage, 3MI), sounding (Sentinel-5 UV, IASI-NG IR, Micro-Wave Sounder, Radio-Occultation) and Metop-SG-B satellite: active (SCA) and passive microwave (Micro-Wave Imager, Ice Cloud Imager), RO, A-DCS EPS-SG Micro-Wave Imager (MWI) a cross-purpose multi-spectral microwave imager serving operational meteorology, oceanography, seaice/snow/land surface observation and climate applications Spectral coverage: 18.7, 23.8, 31.4, 50.3, , 53.24, , 89.0, , 165.5, GHz H, V polarisation V polarisation MWI Planned Products: Cloud liquid water content (total column and gross profile) Cloud-ice content (total column and gross profile) Precipitation detection Precipitation content (liquid and frozen; total column and gross profile) Precipitation rate near the surface Total column water vapour; Sea surface wind speed Snow variables including: Snow water equivalent Snow status (wet/dry) Snow detection Snow cover Sea ice variables including: Sea ice concentration Sea ice type Sea ice motion Sea ice variables for climate monitoring 6 EUM/TSS/VWG/15/ /10/2015

7 EUMETSAT Plans : Sentinel-3 (1) ESA and EUMETSAT will jointly operate the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission ESA develops the S-3 satellites and Ground Segment (with EUMETSAT support), will perform the initial operations of the Sentinel-3 satellites and operate the Land Services EUMETSAT will perform the routine operations of the Sentinel-3 satellites and operate the Marine Services Launch of Sentinel-3A in December 2015, operational services mid-2016 (level 1 products) to 2017 (level 2 products), mission duration > 7.5 years Launch of Sentinel-3B 18 months later Sentinel-3C and D are being procured by ESA Sentinel-3 orbit: sun-synchronous, 98.6º inclination, 814 km mean altitude, 27-day repeat cycle, LTAN=22:00 7 EUM/TSS/VWG/15/ /10/2015

9 EUMETSAT Plans : Sentinel-3 (2) S-3 Marine Altimetry Products Sea Surface Height, Significant Wave Height, Ocean Surface Wind Speed, Ocean Surface Backscatter Sea Ice Freeboard SAR mode continuous observations: improved along-track spatial resolution S-3 Marine SLSTR Products Sea Surface Temperature Ice Surface Temperature to be added S-3 Marine OLCI Products Normalised water-leaving reflectance Algal pigment concentration Total suspended matter concentration Diffuse attenuation coefficient Coloured dissolved matter absorption Photosynthetically active radiation etc. Sentinel-2 (ESA Copernicus mission) has a potential synergy with S-3 OLCI ocean colour in coastal areas Additional Aerosol Optical Depth (all surfaces) product Potential for biological processes and water quality observation in polar regions e.g. algal blooming near ice edge, river discharge during snow melt period Need to address specific processing needs (e.g. low Sun zenith angle); specific properties of the arctic oceans e.g. temperature, salinity; adequate models for atmospheric correction and bio-optical properties 9 EUM/TSS/VWG/15/ /10/2015
