1 MAINTENANCE AND CALIBRATION REPORT NATIONAL PARK SERVICE GASEOUS POLLUTANT MONITORING NETWORK BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK MAY 10, 2006 prepared for John Ray NATIONAL PARK SERVICE Research and Monitoring Branch Air Resources Division P.O. 2 1.0 CALIBRATION SUMMARY In accordance with NPS Gaseous Pollutant Monitoring Program (GPMP) guidelines, ARS performed a maintenance and calibration visit at the following air quality station: Park: Badlands National Park, South Dakota Air quality site: Near Visitors Center Subject: Twice-annual maintenance and calibration Service date: May 10, 2006 Field Specialist: Martin H. Valvur Site Operator: Pat Thompson A summary of pre- and post-maintenance calibration results is presented in Table 1-1. Pre Maintenance Calibration Summary: All sensors were within specifications except for wind direction and precipitation. Maintenance Action Summary: Sensors replaced with rebuilt and calibrated units (standard) - Wind speed and wind direction - Relative humidity Ozone: A pre-maintenance check was performed, and the unit was found to be within specifications. No maintenance was required. Winds: The wind direction sensor failed the pre-maintenance alignment and linearity check. Prior to arriving at the site, there were problems with the wind direction. Investigating the situation, it was discovered that the analog input channel was faulty. The wind direction was moved from analog input 3 to 9. The datalogger channels were also changed accordingly. The post maintenance direction check passed. The wind speed check passed the pre-maintenance check; the unit was replaced, then rechecked, and again passed. No further action was taken. Temperature: The sensor was immersed in three separate baths and passed. No further action was needed. Solar Radiation: The site sensor was compared to a transfer standard over a three hour period and the results were within the 5 limit. The sensor was checked for level and cleaned. No more action was taken. Precipitation: The sensor was calibrated using 450ml of water and was outside the 5 limit, with a percent difference of The unit was adjusted and rechecked two more times before passing. Initially, the unit was out of level, and some dirt was clogging the funnel tip. Relative humidity: The sensor was compared to a transfer standard for four hours and passed. The on-site sensor was not replaced as the replacement unit was found defective. Post Maintenance Calibration Summary: All systems were within specifications.

3 STATION OPERATOR 2.0 ADDITIONAL NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS Pat Thompson assisted with the calibration of the wind sensors. Pat does a good job of maintaining the operation of the shelter and is able to assist quickly when problems arise. MONITORING SHELTER The shelter s air conditioning and heaters are operational. In addition, both towers are in good condition. 3.0 CALIBRATION FORMS All calibration forms are attached. These forms present the details of pre- and postmaintenance calibrations.

Tried a different slot for the trans card, no difference. Swapped analog inputs and placed WD in analog input #9. Initial results are good on the trans card. I will climb the tower and see if my results are better. After climbing the tower the results are within specifications. Post Maint Wind Direction Comments:
