7 EUT: PS3300 Series Uninterruptible Power Supply of 88 3 Introduction This report documents the worst-case results of a series of MIL-STD-1399 Section 300A measurements performed on the Uninterruptible Power Supply manufactured by Powerstar Inc., of Gaithersburg MD. This series of tests was performed by NU Laboratories, Inc. test facility located in Annandale, NJ. 4 Purpose of Tests The purpose of these tests was to determine if the Uninterruptible Power Supply, hereinafter referred to as the EUT (Equipment Under Test), complied with requirements of MIL-STD-1399, Section 300A, as requested by purchase order No , when subjected to the referenced electrical test conditions. 5 Applicable Documents The following documents, of the exact issue shown, are applicable to the extent specified herein. 5.1 Military MIL-STD-1399, Section 300A, Notice 1, 11 March 1992 Interface Standards for Shipboard Systems, Electric Power, Alternating Current MIL-STD-45662A 01 August 1988 Calibration System Requirements 5.2 Other documents ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 General Requirements for Calibration Laboratories and Measuring and Test equipment 6 Test Sample PS3300 Series Uninterruptible Power Supply Model number: PS3300RM-GDAIS-LCS-R2 Serial number: The test sample is an uninterruptible 3.0 kva power supply operating from 120 V ac 50/60 Hz input power and supplying 120 V ac power to a maximum 2100 watt load. The EUT measures 5.25 high x 19 wide x 23.5 long and weighs approximately 105 lbs. 6.1 Table: Cabling of the EUT No. Description Tested Length Type Connected From Connected To 1.8 meters Unshielded shortened to less 1. Input power line three wire 10 Input power than 1.5 meters gauge for the spike test 2 Output power 1.8 meters Unshielded three wire 10 gauge EUT output California Instrument power source Resistive load bank 6.2 Electrical Power The EUT was powered from a California Instrument 4500L power source or utility 120 V ac source.
8 EUT: PS3300 Series Uninterruptible Power Supply of Test Sample Operation The power supply operates in one of two modes of operation: mode # 1 is normal 120 V ac output supplied from the 120 V ac mains operating into a 2100 watt incandescent light load bank; mode # 2 is supplying 120 V ac into the 2100 watt load bank from internal battery power. 6.4 Pass/Fail Criteria For the harmonic tests the pass/fail criteria were based on the test limits as specified in MIL-STD Signals exceeding these limits were considered out of specification. Signals below the specification limits were considered to pass. For all power tests electrical performance of the EUT was determined based on the successful operation of the EUT when subjected to the conditions identified in MIL-STD Successful operation is defined as no observable change in the output. During the emergency conditions tests the power supply may automatically change from operating mode # 1 to mode # 2. If during testing the EUT detects an over-current (> 30 Amps) at the input power, the power breaker will trip to off and the EUT will automatically switch to operating mode # 2. This is a protection circuit for the EUT and does not constitute a failure. 6.5 Monitoring and Critical Parameters The following items were monitored for proper operation: 1. The power supply output was connected to a 2100 watt incandescent light load bank and was visually monitored for normal operation. 2. The status of the input panel was monitored for normal operation. Monitoring of the EUT and determination of pass/fail was made by the test technician during the real time operation of the EUT. 7 Test Facility Description 7.1 Test Site; Facilities, Conditions and Tolerances Unless otherwise specified, all testing was conducted under the following conditions: Ambient Temperature +10 C to +36 C Relative Humidity Less than 95% Atmospheric Pressure 655 mm to 775 mm Hg 7.2 Test Equipment The equipment absolute performance calibration of the equipment requiring calibration is performed on an as-needed basis in accordance with MIL-STD or ANSI/NCSL. The test equipment is capable of making measurements within tolerances of at least +/- 2 db amplitude and +/-2% frequency deviation. Equipment certifications showing traceability to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) are maintained on file at NU Laboratories, Inc. in Annandale, NJ. All equipment is checked and verified for proper operation before each series of tests. Specific test equipment used for each test is listed in each test section. Refer to the Table of Contents for the location. 7.3 Deviations and Exclusions Testing was performed according to the specification MIL-STD-1399 sec. 300A. Any deviations or exclusions to the tests performed are noted in the individual test sections. 8 Test Setup The EUT was set up in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Test setup photos are located in each test section.

33 EUT: PS3300 Series Uninterruptible Power Supply of Emergency conditions test Purpose of test This test was to determine the effects of power interruptions, rapid re-application of power after an interruption, power source voltage and frequency decay, and emergency condition voltage and frequency tolerances. During the performance of this test, the EUT was monitored for signs of susceptibility. Deviations and exclusions There were no deviations from the MIL-STD-1399, Section 300A test requirement for the emergency conditions test. Test procedure Testing was performed in accordance with MIL-STD-1399, Section 300A, paragraph The EUT was operated in mode #1 as described in paragraph Milliseconds interruption test With the EUT energized and operating at the nominal voltage and frequency, the input voltage was interrupted for a period of 50 milliseconds. Test results During the 50 millisecond interruption the EUT had an audible sound indicating loss of ac power and switching to battery power. The unit recovered with no loss of output power. This is normal performance for the EUT. After the 50 millisecond interruption, no malfunction, degradation of performance, or deviation from specified indications was detected. Recommendations and conclusions The EUT, as tested, meets the applicable MIL-STD-1399, 50 millisecond interruption test. No further action is required. Two minute interruption test With the EUT energized and operating at the nominal voltage and frequency, the input voltage was interrupted for a period of two (2) minutes. Test results During the two minute interruption, the EUT switched to battery backup with an audible sound every 10 seconds indicating loss of ac power. After the two minute dropout test, no malfunction, degradation of performance, or deviation from specified indications was detected. Recommendations and conclusions The EUT, as tested, meets the applicable MIL-STD-1399 two minute interruption test. No further action is required. Voltage and frequency decay test With the EUT operating at the nominal supply line voltage and frequency, a line voltage and frequency decay having the characteristics of those shown in the Half-Load in Figure 3 of MIL-STD-1399, Section 300A was applied while monitoring the EUT performance. Test results As the voltage approached 90 V ac / 30 Hz, the current draw exceeded 32 amps. The EUT tripped its power breaker to off and switched to battery power. When ac input power was restored, the EUT stayed in the battery mode until the power breaker was manually turned on. There was no loss of output power during this test. After the voltage and frequency decay test, no malfunction, degradation of performance, or deviation from specified indications was detected when the EUT was supplied with normal ac power as specified in MIL-STD-1399, Section 300A.
34 EUT: PS3300 Series Uninterruptible Power Supply of 88 Recommendations and conclusions The EUT, as tested, meets the applicable MIL-STD-1399 voltage and frequency decay test. No further action is required. Emergency condition test The input voltage to the EUT was increased 35% to V ac and the input frequency was increased 12% to 67.2 Hz for a period of two (2) minutes. Test results During the emergency condition test the EUT switched to battery power with an audible sound twice every 5 seconds indicating the change of state. On return to normal power the EUT returned to normal operation without manual intervention. After the emergency condition test, there was no malfunction, degradation of performance, or deviation from specified indications with the EUT operated at normal power levels specified in MIL-STD Recommendations and conclusions The EUT, as tested, meets the applicable MIL-STD-1399 emergency condition test. No further action is required.
