Wind and Weather Lessn #3 FOSS Califrnia, Grade 5, Water Planet, Investigatin 4, Part 4, and Investigatin 5, Part 2. Cmplete this lessn in cnjunctin with Lessn #2, Energy Transfer Dance. Teacher Nte: This lessn will be mst effective if dne ver three t five days t allw creatin f the dances, revisin f the dances, class discussin, peer feedback and assessment using the perfrmance rubric. CONTENT STANDARDS Dance Grade Invent multiple pssibilities t slve a given mvement prblem and analyze prblem-slving strategies and slutins. 2.5 Demnstrate cperatin, cllabratin, and empathy in wrking with partners and in grups (e.g., leading/fllwing, mirrring, calling/respnding, eching, ppsing). 3.1 Use dance vcabulary t identify and supprt persnal preferences fr dances bserved r perfrmed. Science Grade 5 ES4a Students knw that uneven heating f the earth causes air mvements (cnvectin currents). ES4c Students knw the causes and effects f different types f severe weather. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS (Questins students might ask abut the tpic) Where des wind cme frm? What is the difference between an air frnt and an air mass? Hw d I use the elements f dance t create mvement fr wind and weather? OBJECTIVES & STUDENT OUTCOMES (Students will be able t..) identify, distinguish between, and demnstrate wind and weather in grup exercises thrugh applying the dance elements. 2 Dance Cntrast: T set side by side. T emphasize differences. Changes in energy, space, relatinship, and time all cntribute t cntrast f mvement. Shape: The psitining f the bdy in space: curved, straight, angular, twisted, symmetrical, r asymmetrical. Space: immediate spherical surrunding f the bdy in all directins. Use f space includes shape, width, directin, pathway (curvature), level, relatinship (the psitin f dancers t each ther and t bjects), symmetry and asymmetry. Spatial relatinship: the psitin f dancers t relatin t each ther and t bjects (e.g. side-byside, mirrr, shadw, abve, belw, cnnected, etc.). Time: An element f dance invlving rhythm, phrasing, temp (fast and slw), accent, and duratin. Science Atmsphere: The layer f gases that surrunds a planet r star. Density: The relatinship between the mass (amunt f stuff) f an bject and its vlume (the space it ccupies). Frnt: The leading edge f a mving air mass. Mass: The amunt f material in smething. Uneven heating: The result f different amunts f energy being transferred t adjacent surfaces. Weather: The cnditin f the atmsphere arund us. Heat, misture, and mvement are the three imprtant variables that describe weather. Wind: Air in mtin. WARM UP (Engage students, access prir learning, review, hk r activity t fcus the student fr learning) (5 minutes) Review uneven heating and energy transfer dances frm lessn #2. Ask: Recall ur investigatins, what causes air, land, and water t becme warmer? [We have seen 2 Dance/Earth Sci, Gr5, #3

3 frm ur investigatins that air, land and water absrb heat frm the Sun.] Let s review. Which heats and cls mre quickly, land r water? [Land] What makes the air warm? [Slar energy frm the Sun transfers heat energy t the land which warms the air. this is called energy transfer] What d we knw abut warm air? [Warm air rises because it is less dense than cler air.] What d we knw abut cld air? [Cld air sinks tward the Earth s surface because it is denser than warm air.] Ask: Where d yu think wind cmes frm? Pair share Say: The uneven heating f the Earth by the Sun creates temperature differences that make air in the atmsphere mve. Wind is air in mtin. MODELING (Presentatin f new material, demnstratin f the prcess, direct instructin) (20 minutes) Teach the wind chant: Wind is rushing air filling pen space. Warm, less dense air rises up Cld dense air takes its place. Mvements fr the chant: Line 1: Rll the arms Line 2: Reach up and pen arms wide, return t sides Line 3: Raise left arm, elbw bent, arm parallel t flr t head height Line 4: Sht right arm under and thrugh left arm Have students recrd this chant in their science ntebks. Uneven Heating Wind Dance Return the class int their fur grups frm lessn #2 s Energy Transfer dance. Place table-tp labels (Cl Ocean n the students left side f the space {teacher s right}, and Warm Land n the students right side f the space {teacher s left}.) Say: We just learned that cld air takes the place f warm air when it rises creating wind. We re ging t use ur Energy Transfer Dance t shw hw wind is created. Everyne is ging t be air mlecules in the atmsphere. If yu were part f the land grup, yu will nw be jining the air ver land grup. Yu will nw be called the warm land air grup. If yu were part f the water grup, yu will nw be jining the air ver water grup. Yu will nw be called the cl cean air grup. Have bth grups demnstrate the warming part f the dance fr eight beats. Freeze the dance. Say: Hld yur shapes and listen t me say the chant nce again. Wind is rushing air, filling pen space. Warm, less dense air rises up. Cld dense air takes its place. The warm, less dense air has risen ver here (pint t the warm land air grup). What will the cl cean air grup d t create wind? [The cl air will have t mve t fill the space that the warm air created.] Have the cl cean air grup mve tward the warm land staying at their middle level. Students will gradually spread ut as they mve t fill in an pen space. Say: The cl dense air mves in and pushes the warm less dense air up even higher and ut f the way. Ask (t the warm land air grup) Where will yu g? [We will mve t the cean.] Have the warm land air mve t the cl cean side f the space. Say/Ask: Nw we have warm air ver the cl cean and cl air ver the warm land. What will happen next? [The cl air will warm up and becme less dense and the warm air will cl dwn becming denser.] Shw this thrugh mvement. The students ver the warm land shuld nw rise and spread ut. The students ver the cl cean shuld sink t a lw level in a tight grup shape. Say: This prcess happens at the same time. I will give yu eight beats t change sides and anther 3 Dance/Earth Sci, Gr5, #3

4 eight beats t change yur level. Practice the tw, eight-beat phrases several times. Nte: This exercise demnstrates cnvectin current. Yu may want t stp and discuss if desired. GUIDED PRACTICE (Applicatin f knwledge, prblem slving, crrective feedback) (20 minutes) Teacher Nte: This prtin f the lessn will be mst effective if dne ver three t five days t allw creatin f the dances, revisin f the dances, class discussin, peer feedback and assessment using the perfrmance rubric. Say: We just demnstrated hw the mvement f air in the atmsphere causes wind. In ur exercise we shwed hw many cld air mlecules tk the place f many warm air mlecules. We call these grups f mlecules an air mass. Air mlecules in an air mass all have the same temperature and amunt f misture. Pint t the students n the cean side f the space and say: yu are called a cld air mass. Ø Have students n the cean side f the space use the gesture f arms extended in frnt f bdy with palms tgether n a medium-lw level. Have students make the gesture as yu say cld air mass. Ø Say: Yu all lk the same. Yu have the same temperature (cld) and misture. Pint t the students n the land side f the space and say: yu are a warm air mass. Ø Have students n the land side f the space use the gesture f arms runded in frnt f bdy with hands verlapping n a high level. Have students make the gesture as yu say warm air mass. Ø Say: Yu all lk the same. Yu have the same temperature (warm) and misture. Mass is the amunt f air mlecules in a space that have the same temperature and misture cntent. Air masses dn t always mve ver each ther smthly and nicely like when we shwed wind. Smetimes they crash int each ther and we get rain, snw, sleet, trnads and hurricanes. We call this cnditin f the atmsphere weather. The area where cld and warm air masses meet is called a frnt. Select eight students t demnstrate a warm and cld air frnt. Arrange students in tw ppsing lines. The cld air mass will stand shulder t shulder at a medium-lw level, arms extended. The warm air mass students will stand tw t three feet apart with arms in a curved shape. Have the tw grups walk tward each ther. When the tw grups meet, freeze mvement and say: where these tw air masses meet, we have what is called a frnt. This is where weather happens. There s a change in the atmsphere. Say: Yu will be creating weather dances t shw hw different weather is frmed frm cld and warm air masses and frnts. In yur small grups, read ver the descriptin f hw the weather is frmed and decide hw yu will shw clliding air masses and frnts thrugh mvement. Distribute a Weather Prblem Slving Wrksheet t each grup. Students will refer t their FOSS Science Resurces Bk, pp 240 and 241. Prblem Slving: The Weather Dance: 1) Thunderstrms: A strng, quickly mving cld air mass appraches a nn-mving warm air mass. The clder air, being denser, crashes int and cuts a wedge under the less dense warmer air, lifting it up and finally vertaking it. At the bundary f the frnt, thunderstrms frm bringing cluds, lightening, and heavy rain. 2) Trnades: A strng, quickly mving cld air mass crashes int a slw mving warm air mass. The clder air, being denser, cuts a wedge under the less dense warmer air, spinning the warm air arund and arund, lifting it higher and higher until a trnad is frmed. Mst trnades frm frm thunderstrms. 3) Warm Frnt: A warm air mass slides ver a cld air mass. The warm air cls and we get cluds and light rain fr a lng time. 4) Statinary Frnt: When a warm air mass and a cld air mass meet and stp mving, this is called a Statinary Frnt. Neither is strng enugh t vertake the ther but statinary frnts can wbble back and frth, pushing each ther frward and backward fr sme time. 4 Dance/Earth Sci, Gr5, #3

5 Divide the class int fur grups. Each grup must divide int tw smaller grups representing a warm and cld air mass. Allw five minutes t create mvement fr the prblem. Have vide camera ready t tape. After each demnstratin, ask the fllwing questins: Hw culd yu identify the cld air mass? Hw culd yu identify the warm air mass? What kind f weather did yu see created at the frnt and what mvements did they use t create that weather? Where did yu see cntrast in the dance exercise? [speed, level, shape, relatinship] Videtape each perfrmance. Use the Perfrmance Rubric t assess student achievement. DEBRIEF & REFLECT (Identify prblems encuntered, ask and answer questins, discuss slutins and learning that tk place. Did students meet utcmes?) (5 minutes) Have students respnd t the fllwing exit questins in their science ntebks: Hw des uneven heating cause wind? Hw d mving air masses create weather? Use dance vcabulary t describe hw dance helped yu understand wind and weather? Include the wrds cntrast, shape, level, speed in yur descriptin. Recrd the chant frm the warm up sectin. EXTENSION (Expectatins created by the teacher that encurage students t participate in further research, make cnnectins, and apply understanding and skills previusly learned t persnal experiences.) Have each grup watch their vide s that they can assess their perfrmance. Discuss what was clear abut the perfrmance and make suggestins fr imprvement. Revise and perfrm weather and severe weather dances. Use the rubric t assess the understanding f weather, perfrmance and cllabratin. Write a weather reprt and perfrm dances befre a live audience. 5 Dance/Earth Sci, Gr5, #3
