Instead, they turn nrtheast and die ut ver the Atlantic Ocean. Other winds help build the strm Upper- and lwerlevel winds blwing nearby in the same directin help hurricanes gain strength. Winds blwing in different directins r at different speeds can tear the strm apart. Trpical strms and hurricanes If the strm hlds tgether, a clumn-shaped eye frms at its center. Winds spin arund it, faster and faster. When winds reach 40 miles per hur, the system is called a trpical strm. When winds reach 74 miles per hur, it's a hurricane.
