3 LAB 09: FORCE FIELD DATE: BACKGROUND Our sun emits a stream f charged particles called the slar wind. Earth is surrunded by a magnetic field which deflects mst f thse particles. This field is actually generated by the mvement f the planet s uter cre. It des nt align perfectly with the axis f rtatin, but tilts apprximately 11 degrees. Earth s nrth ple is actually a magnetic suth ple and therefre attracts the nrth ple f a magnet. OBJECTIVE T mdel Earth s electrmagnetic field. MATERIALS bar magnet irn filings spray bttle white vinegar, ¼ cup (30-60 ml) Standard Lab Reprt frms, except custm Results frm fr this lab PROCEDURE 1. Place the magnet n a table r firm surface with the suth ple facing away frm yu. 2. Cver the magnet with a cpy f the custm Results frm s that the diagram f earth is centered ver the magnet. 3. Lightly sprinkle irn filings ver the center f the paper and tap gently until the filings frm a pattern 2013 Classical Educatin Resurces, LLC. All rights reserved ~ 161 ~
4 LAB 09: FORCE FIELD DATE: 4. Carefully spray a very fine mist f vinegar ver the irn filings n the paper. Leave the paper undisturbed until the vinegar has dried. 5. After the vinegar has dried, shake the irn filings int the garbage and bserve yur mdel f Earth s magnetic field. Des it appear as yu expected? 6. IMPORTANT! Dn t peek at the Mineral Identificatin Key. Examine each specimen and try t guess which is the hardest and which is the sftest based upn the texture and feel f the substance. Write dwn yur predictins n the Hypthesis frm. 2. Perfrm a scratch test n all 15 samples. Specimen 1 has already been dne fr yu, s yu ll start with Specimen 2. Attempt t scratch it with the steel, and then examine it with a magnifying glass. Be sure t brush it gently befre viewing t make sure that any dusty residue is frm the specimen itself and nt the scratching bject. If it is scratched by the steel, place a checkmark in the apprpriate clumn. 3. If the specimen was scratched by the steel, attempt t scratch it with the glass. If it is scratched, place a checkmark in the clumn as befre. 4. Cntinue attempting t scratch the sample with prgressively sfter bjects until yu are unable t scratch the mineral. Always start with steel and wrk dwnward thrugh glass, irn nail, penny and finally fingernail until yu reach the bject that cannt scratch the mineral r yu ve scratched it with all the bjects. 5. Estimate the specimen s hardness t be between that f the sftest bject that scratched it and the ne belw, as in the example n the first rw f the Results frm. 6. Cntinue testing each specimen in rder until all 15 are dne. Circle the hardest and sftest ratings yu btained. If yu have multiple samples with the same hardness rating, circle all f them. If yu have any samples which are nt scratched by any bject, rate them as Classical Educatin Resurces, LLC. All rights reserved ~ 184 ~
