1 Spin seprtion due to n inherent spontneous symmetry reking of the frtionl topologil insultor rxiv: v1 [ond-mt.str-el 21 Nov 2017 Sutirth Mukherjee 1 1, 2, nd Kwon Prk 1 Quntum Universe Center, Kore Institute for Advned Study, Seoul 02455, Kore 2 Shool of Physis, Kore Institute for Advned Study, Seoul 02455, Kore (Dted: Novemer 22, 2017) Motivted y the lose nlogy with the frtionl quntum Hll sttes (FQHSs), frtionl Chern insultors (FCIs) re envisioned s strongly orrelted, inompressile sttes emerging in frtionlly filled, (nerly) flt nd with non-trivil Chern numer. Built upon this vision, frtionl topologil insultors (FTIs) hve een proposed s eing omposed of two independent opies of the FCI with opposite Chern numers for different spins, preserving the time-reversl symmetry s whole. An importnt question is if the orreltion etween eletrons with different spins n e relly ignored. To ddress this question, we investigte the effets of orreltion in the presene of spin-dependent holomorphiity, i.e., eletrons of one spin speies reside in the holomorphi lowest Lndu level, while those of the other in the ntiholomorphi ounterprt. By onstruting nd performing ext digonliztion of n pproprite model Hmiltonin, here, we show tht generi, strongly orrelted, frtionlly filled sttes with spin-dependent holomorphiity nnot e desried s two independent opies of the FQHS, suggesting tht FTIs in the lttie nnot e desried s those of the FCI either. Frtionlly filled sttes in this system re generlly ompressile exept t hlf filling, where n insulting stte lled the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi FTI ours. It is predited tht the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi FTI is suseptile to n inherent spontneous symmetry reking, leding to the sptil seprtion of spins. Envisged to our in strongly orrelted systems in (nerly) flt nd with non-trivil Chern numer [1, 2, frtionl Chern insultors (FCIs) [3 8 re the lttie nlogs of the frtionl quntum Hll sttes (FQHSs) [9. The nlogy etween FQHSs nd FCIs n e mde onrete y onstruting the sis funtion mpping etween the lowest-lndu-level wve funtions nd the so-lled hyrid Wnnier funtions, whih re lolized in one diretion, ut extended in nother [7, 8. Frtionl topologil insultors (FTIs) [10 19 re distinguished from FQHSs nd FCIs in the sense tht the former preserve the time-reversl symmetry, while the ltter do not. Coneptully, FTI n e onstruted y omining two independent opies of the FQHS or FCI with opposite Chern numers for different spins [11, 13, 15, 16, 18. Let us ll this stte the independent iprtite FTI. An importnt question is if the orreltion etween eletrons with different spins n e relly ignored in generi situtions, where the eletron-eletron intertion is irrespetive of spin. We seek to find n nswer to this question y investigting wht hppens in frtionlly filled, lowest Lndu level with spin-dependent holomorphiity, i.e., eletrons of one spin speies reside in the holomorphi lowest Lndu level, while those of the other in the ntiholomorphi ounterprt. If the orreltion etween eletrons with different spins n e relly ignored, the ground stte will e given y simple produt of two independent opies of the FQHS, whih n e mpped onto the independent iprtite FTI in the lttie vi the mpping of the sis funtions mentioned ove. To test this senrio, we onstrut nd perform ext digonliztion of n pproprite model Hmiltonin relizing spin-dependent holomorphiity. As result, here, we show tht generi, strongly orrelted, frtionlly filled sttes nnot e desried s two independent opies of the FQHS, suggesting tht FTIs in the lttie nnot e desried s those of the FCI either. In this system, frtionlly filled topologil insultor is predited to our exlusively t hlf filling, suseptile to n inherent spontneous symmetry reking, leding to the sptil seprtion of spins. This hlf-filled spinholomorphi FTI nd its lttie version n e used s spin filter, whih ould e potentilly useful in spintronis [20. Results Spin-holomorphi Lndu levels. We egin y onstruting n pproprite model Hmiltonin relizing spin-dependent holomorphiity. Atully, Bernevig nd Zhng [10 proposed essentilly the identil model Hmiltonin to desrie the dynmis of eletrons onfined in two-dimensionl proli quntum well with effetive spin-orit oupling indued y n pproprite strin grdient. In this work, we onsider somewht different physil mehnism for the reliztion of suh model Hmiltonin. Fundmentlly, ny spin-orit oupling owes its origin to the reltivisti nture of the Dir Hmiltonin. Speifilly, the usul L s term n e otined from the (p E) s term, whih is generted y expnding the Dir Hmiltonin in the non-reltivisti limit. If the eletri field E is indued y rdil eletrostti potentil V (r), i.e., E = 1 dv r dr r, the Dir Hmiltonin n

() The red nd lue (mixed) irles denote the (oinidentl) energy levels of spin up nd down eletrons, respetively, in two-dimensionl hrmoni osilltor s funtion of the z- omponent ngulr momentum eigenvlue l z. The energy levels re independent of spin in the sene of spin-orit oupling. () With ddition of spin-orit oupling, the energy levels of spin up nd down eletrons evolve differently. The red nd lue lines re guide to eye, showing tht the energy levels threded y the respetive lines re rotted round the l z = 0 irles to the opposite diretions, s indited y the orresponding rrows. Note tht the sign of the spin-orit oupling onstnt is not importnt sine different signs just interhnge the role of spin up nd down eletrons. () At n pproprite vlue of the spin-orit oupling onstnt, the energy levels form effetive Lndu levels with the effetive mgneti fields eing opposite for different spins. We ll these lowest effetive Lndu levels the spin-holomorphi Lndu levels sine their holomorphiity depends on spin. e expnded in the non-reltivisti limit s follows: H = p2 2m e + ev (r) + C 1 r dv (r) L σ, (1) dr where C is equl to e/4m 2 e 2 in vuum, ut is ssumed to e vried in mteril. Similrly, the eletron mss m e n e lso vried from its vuum vlue in mteril. If V (r) is two-dimensionl proli potentil onfined in the xy plne, Eq. (1) n e further simplified s follows: H = p2 2m e m eω 2 0r 2 αl z σ z, (2) where the spin-orit oupling onstnt α (= Cm e ω 2 0) is independent of r. Note tht L σ redues to L z σ z due to the two-dimensionl onfinement, whih lso requires tht p 2 = p 2 x + p 2 y nd r 2 = x 2 + y 2. There is lose similrity etween Eq. (2) nd the Hmiltonin for the Lndu levels in the irulr guge, A = B 2 ẑ r: H = p2 2m e m e ( ω ) 2 r 2 ω 2 2 L z, (3) where the ylotron frequeny ω = eb/m e. When α = ω 0, the Hmiltonin in Eq. (2) genertes extly the sme Lndu levels s tht in Eq. (3) (with the level sping repled y 2 ω 0 nd the relevnt length sle y l 0 = /2m e ω 0 ) exept for slient distintion tht eletrons with different spins now feel opposite effetive mgneti fields. In prtiulr, the holomorphiity of the lowest effetive Lndu levels depends on spin, i.e., φ m (r) = r m 0 zm e zz /4l 2 0 nd φ m (r) = r m 0 (z ) m e zz /4l 2 0, where m nd re the respetive retion opertors for spin up nd m down eletrons in the holomorphi nd ntiholomorphi oritls with quntum numer m. For lter onveniene, we set m = l z nd l z for the holomorphi nd ntiholomorphi oritls, respetively, with l z eing the tul z-omponent ngulr momentum eigenvlue. For lrity, the ntiholomorphi retion opertors re distinguished from the holomorphi ounterprts vi the r on top. Let us ll these lowest effetive Lndu levels the spinholomorphi Lndu levels. At generl vlues of α, the Hmiltonin in Eq. (2) n e regrded s two opies of the Fok-Drwin Hmiltonin with opposite mgneti fields for different spins, whose energy eigenvlues re given y E = ω 0 (2n + 1 ± l z ) αl z with n = 0, 1, 2, nd l z = n, n ± 1, n ± 2, for spin up nd down eletrons, respetively. See Fig. 1 for illustrtion. To investigte the effets of orreltion, whih is responsile for the very emergene of FTIs, we next onsider the Coulom intertion etween eletrons in the spin-holomorphi Lndu levels. To this end, we hve to hoose pproprite geometries for the system. One of the most onvenient geometries is the spheril geometry, where the system is pled on the the surfe of sphere with Dir monopole loted t the enter [ Mthemtilly, ll the sis funtions in the plnr geometry n e one-to-one mpped to those in the spheril geometry vi the stereogrphi projetion, i.e., the L z eigensttes in the plnr geometry with l z = {0,, M} nd {0,, M} re mpped to those in the spheril geometry with l z = {M/2,, M/2} nd { M/2,, M/2} for positive nd negtive mgneti field, respetively, where M is the mximum solute vlue of l z defining the system size nd thus the filling ftor. In the spin-holomorphi sitution, we onsider spin-dependent Dir monopole. Speifilly, the spin-dependent monopole strength 2Q / is

Eletron density profile s funtion of residul onfining potentil strength γ t hlf filling in the spin-holomorphi dis geometry. γ = ω0 α with ω0 eing the nturl frequeny of the proli potentil well nd α eing the spin-orit oupling onstnt. () γ = 0.25, 2 () 0.125, p () 0.105, nd (d) in units of e /, where = ~/2me ω0 is the nturl length sle of the system. Sle rs in the figure denote, showing the overll size of the eletron droplet. Also, N = N +N = 16 nd mmx = 15. relted to the spin up/down eletron numer N / vi 1 2Q / = ±(ν / N / λ), where ν / is the spin up/down filling ftor nd λ is the so-lled flux shift. Let us ll this geometry the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry. In this work, we fous on the time-reversl symmetri sitution with N = N nd ν = ν. Another onvenient geometry is the plnr geometry s desried in Eq. (2) with n pproprite oundry ondition, without whih eletrons would spred out unoundedly. One wy to prevent the spreding of n eletron droplet is to introdue n dditionl onfining potentil. Fortuntely, there is nturl onfining potentil present in the system; when the spin-orit oupling onstnt α is not extly equl to ω0, there is residul onfining potentil γlz σz with γ = ω0 α. If γ gets too lrge, eletrons re ll squeezed tightly into the enter. On the other hnd, if γ gets too smll, the eletron droplet flls prt ompletely, nd eletrons re ll pushed to n rtifiil system oundry t r ' 2mmx, where mmx is preset mximum vlue of lz. In this sitution, the eletron density profile would e of ring shpe, whose rdius inreses s funtion of mmx. Only if γ lies within right rnge, the eletron droplet n hve roughly uniform eletron density in nturl dis re, whih is independent of mmx. Let us ll this geometry the spin-holomorphi dis geometry. We find tht, for N = N + N t hlf filling, γ ' 0.1e2 / gives rise to helthy ompetition etween the residul onfining potentil nd the Coulom intertion energies so tht the eletron density is mintined to e unity (i.e., ν = 1) more or less uniformly throughout the entire eletron droplet, whih does not hnge muh for ny mmx lrger thn N 1. Figure 2 shows the evolution of the eletron density profile s funtion of γ. In wht follows, we perform ext digonliztion of the Coulom intertion Hmiltonin in oth spinholomorphi spheril nd dis geometries. Speifilly, we digonlize the following Hmiltonin in the spinholomorphi spheril geometry: 2 X 1 e PSHLL, (4) H = PSHLL i<j rij where PSHLL is the projetion opertor onto the spinholomorphi Lndu levels. In the spin-holomorphi dis geometry, there is n dditionl P term due to the residul onfining potentil: H 0 = γ i Lz,i σz,i. See Methods for the detils of the Coulom mtrix elements in oth spin-holomorphi geometries. Spontneous symmetry reking nd spin seprtion. We first show ext digonliztion results otined in the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry, whih, eing edgeless, n revel ulk properties more lerly. Speifilly, Figure 3 shows the ext energy spetr s funtion of l ngulr momentum quntum numer L t hlf filling in the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry. Before disussing the physil mening of the results in detil, it is importnt to note PN tht the l ngulr momentum opertor, L = i=1 Li, should e ppropritely generlized to tke re of spin-dependent holomorphiity so tht the eigenvlue of L2 remins s good quntum numer, eing L (L +1) s usul. See Methods for detils. Also, onsidering the spin degree of freedom, hlf filling is defined suh tht ν = ν = 1/2, nd therefore ν = ν + ν = 1, whih is similr to the definition of hlf filling in the Hurd model. Speifilly, t hlf filling, 2Q / = ±(2N / 1), or N = 2 Q / + 1, mening tht the l numer of eletrons is extly the sme s the ville oritls in eh of the holomorphi nd ntiholomorphi Lndu levels. Unless stted otherwise, we fous on hlf filling sine other frtionlly filled sttes re generlly ompressile, s explined in the next setion. As shown in Fig. 3, the ehvior of the ext energy spetr in the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi Lndu levels is in strk ontrst to tht of the usul FQHSs, exhiiting remrkle feture tht the ground stte ours t the mximum vlue of l ngulr momentum quntum 2 numer, i.e., L = Lmx = N /4. Usully, the FQHSs our t L = 0 with well-developed energy gp, inditing tht they re uniform, inompressile sttes. Even when the system eomes ompressile, the ground stte

The prtile numer N is vried with () N = 10, () 12, () 14, nd (d) 16. Here, the z-omponent l ngulr momentum quntum numer, L,z, is set equl to zero. Similr to the usul spheril geometry, eh stte t given vlue of L hs 2L + 1 degenerte energy prtners with L,z rnging from L to L. is supposed to our t rndom, ut not the mximum vlue of L. In the urrent sitution, the ground stte ours onsistently t L = L mx, whih diverges even in the proper sling s the system size grows, i.e., L mx / Q / N 3/2. This does not only men tht the ground stte is non-uniform, ut lso tht there would e n infinite numer of degenerte sttes in the thermodynmi limit. Wht would this men physilly? To understnd the physil mening of this result, it is importnt to relize tht there re ertin sttes mong the ove vstly degenerte multiplets t L = L mx, whose ext wve funtions re uniquely determined y the symmetry lone. Suh stte is the stte t L,z = L mx, whose ext wve funtion is otined uniquely y filling ll the oritls in the upper nd lower hemispheres with spin up nd down eletrons, respetively. The other is the stte t L,z = L mx, whose ext wve funtion is otined similrly with the roles of spin up nd down eletrons interhnged. This mens tht, in these sttes, different spins re sptilly seprted from eh other ompletely. The spin seprtion in the sttes t L,z = ±L mx n e shown more lerly y exmining the expliit E [ e 2 /εl 0 E [e 2 /εl 0 forms of their ext wve funtions: N/2 Ψ ±L mx = ±m m 0, (5) m=1 where m nd m re the respetive retion opertors for spin up nd down eletrons in the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry. More intuitively, Ψ ±L mx n e denoted s,,,, nd,,,,,, re- spetively, lerly showing the sptil seprtion of spins. The ove wve funtion is definitely not of the independent iprtite form, whih is to e given y the diret produt of two omposite-fermion (CF) ses t hlf filling with omplex onjugtion pplied to the spin-down prt. i.e., Ψ ind.ip. = Ψ2 CFS Ψ 2 CFS, where 2 CFS stnds for the Fermi se of CFs rrying two vorties [ Therefore, it is shown tht the orreltion etween eletrons with different spins definitely nnot e ignored, t lest for the sttes t L,z = ±L mx. As shown elow, the sme is true for the other degenerte multiplets. Menwhile, there is lose similrity etween the usul ilyer quntum Hll nd the urrent spin-holomorphi systems, suggesting tht nturl tril stte ould e given y the spin-holomorphi version of the Hlperin (111) stte [27 29: Ψ (1 11) = N/2 m= N/2 ( m + m ) 0, (6) whih, in terms of the rel spe oordintes, orresponds to i<j (z i z j ) m<n (ω m ωn) k,l (z k ωl ) with z nd ω denoting the oordintes of the spin up nd down eletrons, respetively. Bernevig nd Zhng [10 previously used similr logi to propose the spin-holomorphi version of the Hlperin (mmn) stte s the tril stte for generi FTI. It is interesting to note tht Ψ (1 11) ontins Ψ ±L mx s suset of the onstituent sttes prtiipting in the liner superposition. In some sense, Ψ (1 11) is nlogous to the prmgneti stte, whih, in ddition to prevlent rndom flututions, ontins vrious ferromgneti onstituent sttes, to whih Ψ ±L mx re nlogous, spontneously reking the sptil symmetry. We provide more detiled explntion for this nlogy elow. Other degenerte multiplets t L,z ±L mx hve generlly very omplited wve funtions, whose mplitudes re spred over vrious mny-ody ses in seemingly unoordinted fshion. It is, however, importnt to relize tht ll these sttes n e uniquely otined y pplying the ngulr momentum lowering nd rising opertor to the sttes t L,z = ±L mx. Tht is, they re ll relted with eh other vi rigid rottion, whih, omined with the very existene of degenery, mens tht these sttes n e linerly re-superposed to produe other spin-seprted sttes just like those
5 5 g g d FIG. 4. Pir orreltion funtions in the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi Lndu levels. Pir orreltion funtions etween the sme spin, () g (r), nd etween different spins, () g (r) in the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry for the stte t L = 64 nd L,z = 0 with N = 16. Note tht the referene eletron is hosen to e spin up nd loted on the equtor, s indited y the red rrow in the figure. Similr pir orreltion funtions, () g (r) nd (d) g (r), re shown in the spin-holomorphi dis geometry with N = 16. Here, the residul onfining potentil strength is set to e γ = 0.105e2 / to ensure uniform eletron density. t L = ±Lmx with their spin-seprtion lines eing different from the equtor. In other words, the spinseprtion line n e freely rotted to eome ny of the gret irles. Eventully, suh freedom mnifests itself s spontneous reking of the sptil symmetry. To provide evidene for this interprettion, we ompute the pir orreltion funtion, whih mesures the proility of finding n eletron t position r when referene eletron is loted t the origin. Among the vrious degenerte multiplets t L = Lmx, we fous on the stte t L,z = 0, whih is expeted to e linerly superposed stte of ll possile spin-seprted sttes, whose spin-seprtion lines re the gret irles onneting the north nd south poles. In this sitution, loting the origin on the equtor would selet prtiulr spinseprted onstituent stte, pinning the spin-seprtion line. For this seleted spin-seprted stte, the pir orreltion funtion etween the sme spin should e smll t long distne, while lrge t short distne exept for the ovious drop t the origin due to the formtion of n exhnge hole required y the Puli exlusion priniple. The pir orreltion funtion etween different spins should show the opposite ehvior. Figure 4 () nd () show tht this is indeed extly the se, onfirming the spin seprtion. Next, we hek if suh spin seprtion lso ours in the spin-holomorphi dis geometry. Figure 4 () nd (d) show the pir orreltion funtions etween the sme nd different spins, respetively, in the spin-holomorphi dis geometry. As one n see, the ehviors of the pir orreltion funtions re extly s expeted for the spinseprted stte, onsistent with the results otined in the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry. Fundmentlly, the spin seprtion is due to peulir struture of the Coulom mtrix elements in the spinholomorphi Lndu levels. In the usul quntum Hll system, eletrons re lwys sttered wy from eh other regrdless of spin. In the spin-holomorphi system, however, the ngulr momentum onservtion lw dittes tht, fter sttering, eletrons with different spins move together to the sme rdil diretion, mking it diffiult to redue the Coulom energy unless eletrons with different spins re sptilly seprted from the outset nd thus hve no hne to enounter eh other. See Methods for detils. So fr, it hs een shown tht different spins re sptilly seprted in the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi Lndu levels. In wht follows, we show tht suh spinseprted stte should e inompressile. Energy gp, helil edge exittion, nd inompressiility. At hlf filling, the l numer of eletrons is extly the sme s the ville oritls in eh of the holomorphi nd ntiholomorphi Lndu levels. Menwhile, it is shown ove tht different spins re sptilly seprted in the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi Lndu levels. We rgue tht these two fts led to inompressiility. The logi is s follows. The omintion of the ove two fts mke ll the oritls in the hlf-filled spinholomorphi Lndu levels oupied y either spin up or down eletrons without ny vny. Then, ny dditionl eletron of given spin speies nnot penetrte into the region of the sme spin due to the Puli exlusion priniple nd thus e pushed to the region of the opposite spin. However, there would e lrge Coulom energy ost for this to hppen due to the spin seprtion. Therefore, the spin-seprted hlf-filled stte should e inompressile. The sme logi tully tells us tht frtionlly filled sttes t less thn hlf filling should e generlly ompressile sine there re now vnt oritls etween two spin-seprted regions. In this sitution, ny dditionl eletron n nestle niely into these vnt oritls without osting too muh Coulom energy. Frtionlly filled sttes t greter thn hlf filling re lso expeted to e ompressile owing to the prtile-hole symmetry. To e onrete, we ompute the energy gp of the hlffilled stte in the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry y using the following formul: = EN +1,Q / + EN 1,Q / 2EN,Q /, (7) where EN,Q / is the ground stte energy of N prti-

() Shemti digrm showing the helil edge exittions in the spin-holomorphi dis geometry. () Differene of the eletron density profiles etween efore nd fter dding two extr eletrons of up nd down spins t the system with N = 14. Here, the residul onfining potentil strength γ is set to e 0.105e 2 /ɛl 0. les t flux Q /. Aove, we inrese nd derese the prtile numer y one from N stisfying the hlf-filling ondition, N = 2 Q / + 1. It is importnt to note tht the energy gp is given s the sum of E N+1,Q / E N,Q / nd E N 1,Q / E N,Q / to tke into ount the hemil potentil shift ssoited with the prtile numer hnge t fixed Q /. Figure 5 () shows tht, plotted s funtion of 1/N, the energy gp n e niely linerly extrpolted to finite vlue 0.3e 2 /ɛl 0 in the thermodynmi limit, onfirming the inompressiility of the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi stte, whih n e now regrded s legitimte frtionl topologil insultor. Menwhile, we hve onfirmed tht frtionlly-filled spin-holomorphi stte t less thn hlf filling, sy, ν = ν = 1/3, hs vnishing energy gp in the thermodynmi limit, whih is onsistent with the previous result reported y Chen nd Yng [16 tht suffiiently strong interspin intertion genertes ompressile stte with phse seprtion t this filling. In the dis geometry, inompressiility mens the sene of low-energy exittions in the ulk. If so, ny dditionl eletron would e pushed to the edge, reting n edge exittion. In the presene of spin-dependent holomorphiity, the edge exittions with different spins should form mutully ounter-rotting oritls on the edge, i.e., helil edge exittions. See Fig. 5 () for shemti digrm. To onfirm this senrio, we ompute the differene of the eletron density profiles etween l efore nd fter dding two extr eletrons of up nd down spins in the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi stte. Figure 5 () shows tht lmost ll of the proility weights of the two extr eletrons re indeed pushed to the edge, forming the helil edge exittions. Now, let us disuss the trnsport signture of suh helil edge exittions. In the sene of mgneti impurities, the system is time-reversl symmetri, nd thus ny k-sttering, or hyridiztion etween helil edge exittions with different spins is ompletely prohiited, proteting the Krmer s degenery. Then, the Lnduer-Büttiker formlism [30 for the llisti trnsport suggests tht the Hll ondutivity of eh spin speies should e quntized extly s ±e 2 /h. This mens tht the usul Hll ondutivity is zero, while the spin Hll ondutivity is quntized s 2e 2 /h just like in the usul 2D topologil insultors [ It is importnt to note tht, even though the spin Hll ondutivity is 2e 2 /h, the l filling ftor ν = ν + ν = 1, not 2 s in the usul topologil insultors, resulting in n intriguing mismth etween the spin Hll ondutivity in units of e 2 /h nd the l filling ftor. Disussion In this work, we provide evidene tht generi, strongly orrelted sttes in frtionlly filled, topologilly nontrivil nd nnot e desried s two independent opies of the FQHS or FCI. Speifilly, we onstrut nd perform ext digonliztion of n pproprite model Hmiltonin, whih forms effetive Lndu levels with spin-dependent holomorphiity, i.e., eletrons with different spins experiene opposite effetive mgneti fields. It is predited tht the FTI ourring t hlf filling in the spin-holomorphi Lndu levels is suseptile to n inherent spontneous symmetry reking, leding to the sptil seprtion of spins. The hlf-filled spin-holomorphi FTI with suh spin seprtion ould e potentilly useful in spintronis sine it n serve s roust intertion-driven spin filter, whih sorts eletrons with different spins into two sptilly seprted regions. One emedded in their respetive spin-seprted regions, spins re expeted to e proteted ginst vrious deoherene mehnisms y the Coulom intertion. A spin-filtered urrent n flow y tthing led deep inside the desired spin-seprted region, where the edge urrent surrounding the tthed led should e omposed of only the single spin speies orresponding to the region. Now, we disuss riefly how this stte n e relized in experiments. Our model Hmiltonin is sed on two-dimensionl eletron gs onfined in proli onfining potentil with strong spin-orit oupling, whih n e relized y onstruting semiondutor quntum well or heterostruture on the sustrte mde of strong spin-orit-oupled mteril. Another wy of relizing essentilly the sme model Hmiltonin is to indue n effetive spin-orit oupling y pplying n pproprite
7 7 strin grdient in two-dimensionl proli quntum well, s proposed y Bernevig nd Zhng [10. Perhps, more importnt possiility is the hlf-filled Chern nd in the lttie with time-reversl symmetry. In priniple, the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi FTI studied in this work n e mpped to its lttie version vi the sis funtion mpping etween the lowest-lndu-level wve funtions nd the hyrid Wnnier funtions [7, 8. If so, our study predits tht strongly orrelted, hlffilled Chern nd with time-reversl symmetry n host spin-seprted FTI, nd thus spin filter. The spin seprtion n e diretly onfirmed y pling the smple in Kerr mirosope t low temperture, where the Kerr rottion mesurement [34 n show the umultion of opposite spins in two hlves of the smple. The quntiztion of the spin Hll ondutivity n e verified either in spin-filtered experiment or in hrge trnsport experiment y mesuring the four-terminl resistne, s shown y König et l. [33. Lstly, the oservtion of n tivted longitudinl resistne n estlish the inompressiility of the hlf-filled spin-holomorphi stte. Methods Coulom mtrix elements. In the spinholomorphi Lndu levels, the intertion Hmiltonin n e written in seond quntiztion s follows: H = m 1 m 2 m 4 m3 m 1, m 2 V m 3, m 4 m 1,m 2,m 3,m 4 + m 1 2 m m 4 m3 m 1, m 2 V m 3, m 4 m 1,m 2,m 3,m 4 + m 1 2 m m 4 m3 m 1, m 2 V m 3, m 4, m 1,m 2,m 3,m 4 (8) where m nd m re the respetive retion opertors for spin up nd down eletrons in the holomorphi nd ntiholomorphi oritls, respetively, with quntum numer m, whih is the solute vlue of the z- omponent ngulr momentum eigenvlue, l z. Note tht l z 0 nd 0 for spin up nd down eletrons in the spin-holomorphi Lndu levels, respetively. The first two terms in Eq (8) re extly the sme s those in the usul quntum Hll systems. Wht is different in the spin-holomorphi systems is the lst term, whih desries the intertion etween different spins with spindependent holomorphiity. Conretely, in the spin-holomorphi dis geometry, the Coulom mtrix elements etween spin-up eletrons re written s follows: = d 2 kṽk m 1, m 2 e ik (r1 r2) m 3, m 4 = d 2 kṽka m1m 3 (k)a m2m 4 ( k), (9) where Ṽ k is the Fourier omponent of V (r), nd A mm (k) = m e ik r m = d 2 rφ m(r)e ik r φ m (r). After mking use of some nlytil properties of the lowest- Lndu-level eigensttes, φ m (r), it n e shown [35 tht A mm (k) = (iκ) m m L mm (k)e k2 /2, where L mm (k) = 2 m m! 2 m m! Lm m m (k2 /2) with κ = k x + ik y = ke iθ nd L r n(x) eing the generlized Lguerre polynomil. Then, due to nie seprtion of vriles etween k nd θ, Eqution (9) n e rewritten s follows: = i m1 m3 ( i) m2 m4 kdkṽkl m1m 3 (k)l m2m 4 (k)e k2 k m1+m2 m3 m4 dθe iθ(m1+m2 m3 m4), (10) where the lst ftor imposes seletion rule for the m indies inditing the ngulr momentum onservtion, m 1 + m 2 = m 3 + m 4. The Coulom mtrix elements etween spin-down eletrons re extly the sme s those ove sine they re oth rel nd relted to eh other vi omplex onjugtion. Menwhile, the Coulom mtrix elements etween different spins re given s follows: = d 2 kṽk m 1, m 2 e ik (r1 r2) m 3, m 4 = d 2 kṽka m1m 3 (k)a m4m 2 ( k) = d 2 kṽka m1m 3 (k)a m 2m 4 (k), (11) where we hve used A mm (k) = A m m ( k). Agin, due to nie seprtion of vriles etween k nd θ, the ove eqution n e rewritten s follows: = i m1 m3 ( i) m2 m4 kdkṽkl m1m 3 (k)l m2m 4 (k)e k2 k m1+m2 m3 m4 dθe iθ(m1 m2 m3+m4), (12) where it is importnt to note tht the seletion rule for the m indies is now hnged to m 1 m 2 = m 3 m 4. At first sight, this seletion rule my seem s if it reks the ngulr momentum onservtion lw, ut tht is not true sine the tul ngulr moment for spin-down eletrons re l z = m 2 nd m 4, nd therefore it is in ft extly the ngulr momentum onservtion lw. The omprison etween Eqs. (10) nd (12) tells us tht the Coulom mtrix elements etween the sme nd different spins would e extly the sme if it were not for the hnge in the seletion rule.
8 8 Fundmentlly, this hnge in the seletion rule is the physil origin of the spin seprtion t hlf filling of the spin-holomorphi Lndu levels. To understnd this, it is importnt to note tht the m indies denote the rdil lotions of the Lndu level eigensttes. The peulir seletion rule for the Coulom mtrix elements in the spin-holomorphi Lndu levels dittes tht, fter sttering, eletrons with different spins should move together to the sme rdil diretion in order to keep the m-index differene the sme. This mens tht eletrons with different spins nnot void eh other effetively unless there is spontneous reking of the sptil symmetry so tht they re sptilly seprted from the outset nd thus hve no hne to enounter eh other. The sme logi pplies to the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry. Speifilly, in the spin-holomorphi spheril geometry, the Coulom mtrix elements etween spin-up eletrons (nd etween spin-down eletrons) re given s follows: = dω 1 dω 2 YQQm 1 (r 1 )YQQm 1 2 (r 2 ) r 1 r 2 Y QQm3 (r 1 )Y QQm4 (r 2 ) = 1 2Q l Q, m 1 ; l, m Q, m 3 Q, m 4 ; l, m Q, m 2 Q l=0 m= l Q, Q; l, 0 Q, Q 2, (13) where Y Qlm represents the monopole hrmonis with the monopole strength Q, the ngulr momentum quntum numer l, nd the z-omponent ngulr momentum quntum numer m. j 1, m 1 ; j 2, m 2 J, M is the Clesh- Gordn oeffiient. Aove, we hve used the expnsion of the Coulom potentil on the surfe of sphere in terms of the spheril hrmonis [23: 1 r 1 r 2 = 4π R l l=0 m= l 1 2l + 1 Y 0lm(Ω 1 )Y 0lm (Ω 2 ), (14) where R is the rdius of sphere, whih is set equl to Q s usul. Similrly, the Coulom mtrix elements etween different spins re given s follows: = dω 1 dω 2 YQQm 1 1 (r 1 )Y QQm2 (r 2 ) r 1 r 2 Y QQm3 (r 1 )YQQm 4 (r 2 ) = 1 2Q l Q, m 1 ; l, m Q, m 3 Q, m 2 ; l, m Q, m 4 Q l=0 m= l Q, Q; l, 0 Q, Q 2, (15) where it is importnt to note tht the only differene etween Eqs. (13) nd (15) is tht m 2 nd m 4 re swpped, whih hnges the seletion rule for the m indies from m 1 + m 2 = m 3 + m 4 to m 1 m 2 = m 3 m 4, similr to the spin-holomorphi dis geometry. Angulr momentum opertors in the spinholomorphi spheril geometry. As mentioned in the min text, the l ngulr momentum opertor is defined s L = i L i so tht L 2 = i,j [ 1 2 (L +,il,j + L,i L +,j ) + L z,i L z,j, (16) where L ±,i re the ngulr momentum rising nd lowering opertors of the i-th eletron, respetively, while L z,i is the z-omponent ngulr momentum opertor of the sme eletron. Conretely, ( L ±,i = e ±iφi ± + i ot θ i + ˆQ ), (17) θ i φ i sin θ i L z,i = i φ i, (18) where θ i nd φ i re the polr nd zimuthl ngles of the i-th eletron. In the usul spheril geometry with single mgneti monopole, ˆQ is just numer representing the monopole strength. In the spin-holomorphi sitution, however, spin up/down eletrons experiene opposite effetive mgneti fields, whih re generted y the respetive mgneti monopoles with opposite strengths. A solution to tke re of the spin-dependent monopole strengths is to tret ˆQ s n opertor. Speifilly, ˆQYQlm (θ, φ) = QY Qlm (θ, φ) nd ˆQYQlm (θ, φ) = QY Qlm (θ, φ). In this generliztion, the ngulr momentum rising nd lowering opertors re pplied to single prtile sis in the spin-holomorphi Lndu level s follows: L ± Q, Q, m = Q(Q + 1) m(m ± 1) Q, Q, m ± 1, (19) L ± Q, Q, m = Q(Q + 1) m(m 1) Q, Q, m 1, (20) L z Q, Q, m = m Q, Q, m, (21) L z Q, Q, m = m Q, Q, m, (22) where θ, φ Q, Q, m = Y QQm (θ, φ) nd θ, φ Q, Q, m = YQQm (θ, φ). Aove, the prtile index i is dropped for revity. Eletroni ddress: kprk@kis.re.kr [1 Tng, E., Mei, J.-W. & Wen, X.-G. High-Temperture Frtionl Quntum Hll Sttes. Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, (2011).
