Tlk given t 34th Renontres de Moriond QCD nd High Energy Hdroni Intertions, Les Ars, Frne, Mrh 20 27, 1999 TRANSVERSE SPECTRA OF INDUCED RADIATION rxiv:hep-ph/ v2 17 Jun 1999 B.G. Zkhrov Lndu Institute for Theoretil Physis, GSP-1, , Kosygin Str. 2, Mosow, Russi Astrt Trnsverse spetr of indued rdition re disussed within the light-one pth integrl pproh to the LPM effet. The results re pplile in oth QED nd QCD.
Reently the Lndu-Pomernhuk-Migdl (LPM) effet [1, 2] in indued rdition in QED nd QCD hs ttrted muh ttention (see review y Klein [3] nd referenes therein). Understnding the LPM effet in QCD is of gret importne for evlution of prton energy loss in nulei nd hot QCD medium [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The se of hot QCD medium is espeilly interesting in view of the experiments on AA-ollisions t RHIC nd LHC. In Ref. [5] I hve developed new rigorous light-one pth integrl pproh to the LPM effet. There I hve disussed the p -integrted spetr. In this tlk I disuss the trnsverse spetr of indued rdition. Similrly to Ref. [5] the results re pplile in oth QED nd QCD. For simpliity I desrie the formlism for n indued trnsition in QED for slr prtiles with n intertion Lgrngin L int = λ[ ˆψ + ˆψ + ˆψ + ˆψ ˆψ ˆψ+ ]. The orresponding S-mtrix element reds Ŝ = i dtdrλψ (t,r)ψ (t,r)ψ (t,r), (1) where ψ i re the wvefuntions (ingoing for i = nd outgoing for i =, ). I normlize the flux to unity t z = for i = nd t z = for i =,, nd write ψ i s ψ i (t,r) = 1 2Ei exp[ i(t z)p i,z ]φ i (t,r). (2) In the high energy limit, E i m i, the dependene of φ i on the vrile τ = (t + z)/2 t t z =onst is governed y the two-dimensionl Shrödinger eqution i φ i τ = H iφ i, (3) H i = 2µ i + e i A 0 + m2 i 2µ i, (4) where µ i = p i,z, e i is the eletri hrge, A 0 is the potentil of the trget. After some lger from (1), (2) one n otin in the high energy limit the following expression for the inlusive proility of indued rdition d 5 P = 2 dxdq dq (2π) 4Re z 1 <z 2 dρ 1 dρ 2 dz 1 dz 2 g F(z 1, ρ 1 )F (z 2, ρ 2 ), (5) where q, re the trnsverse moment, ρ is trnsverse oordinte, x = p,z /p,z (note tht for the prtile p,z = (1 x)p,z ), g = λ 2 /[16πx(1 x)e 2 ],... mens verging over the sttes of the trget, F(z, ρ) = φ (t,r)φ (t,r)φ (t,r) t=z. Sine the wvefuntions enter (5) only t t = z, φ i n e regrded s funtions of z, nd ρ. In the Shrödinger eqution (3) z will ply the role of time. I represent z-dependene of φ i in terms of the Green s funtion, K i, of the Hmiltonin (4). Then, in the digrm lnguge (5) is desried y the grph of Fig.1. I depit K i (Ki ) y ( ). The dotted line shows the trnsverse density mtries t lrge longitudinl distnes in front of (z = z i ) nd ehind (z = z f ) the trget. 1 If the prtile is produed in hrd retion, nd does 2
() () Figure 1: The digrm representtion of the inlusive spetrum (5) (), nd (6) (). not propgte from infinity, then z i equls the oordinte of the prodution point. Below I will onsider the rdition rte integrted over q. In this se the grph of Fig.1 is trnsformed into the one of Fig.1. The orresponding nlytil expression reds z f z f = 2 dxdq (2π) 2Re dz 1 dz 2 dρ,f dρ,f dρ dρ dρ dρ dρ,idρ,i g exp[ iq (ρ,f ρ,f )] z i z 1 S (ρ,f, ρ,f, z f ρ, ρ, z 2)M(ρ, ρ, z 2 ρ, ρ, z 1)S (ρ, ρ, z 2 ρ,i, ρ,i, z i), (6) S i (ρ 2, ρ 2, z 2 ρ 1, ρ 1, z 1) = K i (ρ 2, z 2 ρ 1, z 1 )K i (ρ 2, z 2 ρ 1, z 1), (7) M(ρ 2, ρ 2, z 2 ρ 1, ρ 1, z 1) = K (ρ 2, z 2 ρ 1, z 1 )K (ρ 2, z 2 ρ 1, z 1 )K (ρ 2, z 2 ρ 1, z 1). (8) Using the pth integrl representtion for the Green s funtions one n evlute nlytilly the initil- nd finl-stte intertion ftors S, [9]. The ftor M (8) differs from tht of Ref. [5] y the replement of ρ 2 y ρ 2 in the Green s funtion K. Similr to tht of Ref. [5] it n e expressed through the Green s funtion K desriing the reltive motion of the prtiles nd in fititious ā system. After nlytil integrtion over the enter-of-mss trnsverse oordintes the rdition rte tkes the form where Φ (τ, z 1 ) = exp z f z f = 2 dxdq (2π) 2Re dz 1 dz 2 dτ g exp( iq τ ) z i z 1 [ ] i(z1 z 2 ) Φ (τ, z 2 ) exp K (τ, z 2 0, z 1 )Φ (τ, z 1 ), (9) σ ā(τ ) 2 z 1 L f dzn(z), z i Φ (τ, z 2 ) = exp σ (τ ) 2 z f dzn(z) (10) z 2 re the eikonl initil- nd finl-stte sorption ftors, 2 τ = xτ, L f = 2E x(1 x)/[m 2 (1 x) + m 2 x m 2 x(1 x)]. The Hmiltonin for the Green s funtion K reds H = in(z)σ ā(τ, τ ), (11) 2µ 2 1 Stritly speking, in (1), (5) the ditilly vnishing t z z i,f oupling should e used. For simpliity I do not indite the oordinte dependene of the oupling. 2 I emphsize, tht pperne of the eikonl sorption ftors in (9) is nontrivil onsequene of the speifi form of evolution opertors S, [9], nd is not onneted with ppliility of the eikonl pproximtion. 3
where µ = E x(1 x), τ = [τ +τ (1 x)]. In (10), (11) n(z) is the numer density of the trget, σ ā nd σ re the dipole ross setions of intertion with the medium onstituent of ā nd pirs, nd σā is the three-ody ross setion for ā-system. The integrtion over q in (9) gives the x-spetrum dp z f z f dx = 2Re dz 1 dz 2 g exp z i z 1 [ ] i(z1 z 2 ) K (0, z 2 0, z 1 ). (12) In Ref. [5] I hve derived the p T -integrted rdition rte using the unitrity onnetion etween the proility of trnsition nd the rditive orretion to trnsition. The ltter is desried y the digrm of Fig. 2, whih n e trnsformed into the grph of Fig.2, orresponding to the integrl in (12). 3 One n esy show tht the digrm of Fig. 2 n lso e otined diretly from tht of Fig. 1 fter integrtion over q. L f () () Figure 2: The digrm representtion of the rditive orretion to the proility of trnsition. Eqution (9) estlishes the theoretil sis for evlution of the p T -dependene of the LPM effet. Note tht for trnsition with the formtion length muh greter thn the trget thikness (for the prtile inident from infinity) (9) n e expressed through the light-one wve funtion Ψ s = 2 dτdτ exp( iq dxdq (2π) 2 τ )Ψ (x, τ τ )Γā (τ, τ )Ψ (x, τ). (13) Here, τ = τ, τ = [τ(1 x) + τ x], Γā = { 1 exp [ σ ]} ā 2 dzn(z) is the Gluer profile funtion for intertion of ā stte with the trget. The derivtion of (13) is sed on onnetion etween the Green s funtion K in vuum nd Ψ [10]. Eqution (13) generlizes the formul for the p T -integrted spetrum of Ref. [11]. It is of interest in 3 The grph of Fig. 2 (nd the integrl in (12)) in itself requires sutrting of the infinite vuum ounter term. The vuum term hs n imginry prt onneted with orretion to m, whih (z f z i ), nd rel prt relted to the wvefuntion renormliztion. The ltter ppers fter seprting the mss term, nd onneted with the onfigurtions z 1 < z f < z 2. This oundry effet is sent if the oupling vnishes t lrge z. Evidently, in this se the vuum term does not ffet the x-spetrum. Nonetheless, it is onvenient, s ws done in Ref. [5], to keep the vuum term to simplify the singulr z-integrtion in (12). 4
its own right. In prtiulr, the leding term in n(z) of the rhs in (13) gives onvenient formul for evlution of the Bethe-Heitler ross setion through the light-one wvefuntion. In generl se one n estimte the inlusive ross setion using the prmetriztion σā = C τ 2 + C τ 2 + C τ 2 (here τ = (τ + τ )). Then the Hmiltonin (11) ] 1/2, with C(x) = [ tkes the osilltor form with the frequeny Ω(z) = (1 i) n(z)c(x) 2 E x(1 x) C (1 x) 2 + C + C x 2. The Green s funtion for the osilltor Hmiltonin n e written in the form K os (τ 2, z 2 τ 1, z 1 ) = γ(z 1, z 2 ) 2πi exp { i [ α(z 1, z 2 )τ β(z 1, z 2 )τ 2 1 γ(z 1, z 2 )τ 1 τ 2 ]}, (14) where the funtions α, β nd γ n e evluted in the pproh of Ref. [12]. Using the prmetriztion σ īi = C ii τ 2 i one n otin = 1 dxdq (2π) 2Re z f z i dz 1 z f z 1 dz 2 g γ(z 1, z 2 ) Q(z 1, z 2 ) exp [ iq2 4Q(z 1, z 2 ) + i(z ] 1 z 2 ), (15) where the ftor Q(z 1, z 2 ) n e expressed through the prmeters C ij, the funtions α, β, γ, n, nd Ω. The formul for this ftor is too umersome to e presented here. The generliztion of the ove results to the relisti QED nd QCD Lgrngins redues to trivil replement of the two- nd three-ody ross setions, nd the vertex ftor g. The ltter, due to spin effets in the vertex, eomes n opertor. The orresponding formuls re given in Refs. [5, 13]. The results otined n e pplied to mny prolems. In prtiulr in QCD this pproh n e used for evlution of high-p T hdron spetr, the p T -dependene of DY pirs nd hevy qurks prodution in ha-ollisions, ngulr dependene of the prton energy loss in hot QCD mtter produed in AA-ollisions. It is lso of interest for study the initil ondition for qurk-gluon plsm in AA-ollisions. I would like to thnk N.N. Nikolev nd D. Shiff for disussions. I m grteful to J.
