CARDINALS Baylor leads the all-time series with Lamar 8-0 and is 3-0 vs. the Cardinals in Waco. Tuesday s game marks the first time the schools have met up since Baylor went 3-0 vs. Lamar in 1984 and won all five matchups with the Cardinals in BAYLOR HIGHLIGHTS Baylor s sweep of Texas Tech on the road March was the school s first sweep of a Big 12 team on the road since the league went to a three-game series format in Whitney Canion threw the 29th career 1-hitter in school history March 30 and the second of the season when she limited Texas Tech to just a hit in a 2-0 win. She struck out nine, and it was Canion s seventh career 1-hitter. On March 28, Baylor hit five home runs in a 14-1 win over Texas Tech tying a school record; Clare Hosack also became the 33rd player in school history to have two home runs in a game for Baylor. Baylor had an 11-game winning streak from Feb March 18. Baylor went 5-0 at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament March Kaitlyn Thumann tied a school record with four runs scored and tied a career high with four hits in Baylor s 8-1 win over Penn State March 16. Kaitlyn Thumann s career-long 11-game hitting streak and 44 game on-base streak (April 9, March 15, 2014) came to an end vs. UCONN at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament March 15. Heather Stearns was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week March 4 to earn the conference s weekly honor for the first time in her career. She pitched a four-hit shutout in the longest outing of her career (8 innings) striking out 12 to help Baylor beat then-unbeaten Miss. State 1-0 (2/28). She closed the tournament with Baylor s 28th one-hitter in school history as she struck out 11 in a 2-1 win over UTSA (3/2). Whitney Canion became the seventh player in Big 12 history to win 100 games when she took down No. 14 South Alamaba in a 1-0 victory March 1. Canion struck out 12 in a 2-hit shutout in the signature game of the tournament that boasted No. 12 Baylor and No. 14 South Alabama. Kaitlyn Thumann hit.588 during the Gulf Coast Classic and was named on the NFCA s top peformances list for the week of March 4. Whitney Canion was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Feb. 25 for the eighth time in her career for her performance at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. She posted a 0.00 ERA in 21 innings of work, won all three of her starts and picked up a save. Her wins were over No. 11 Stanford, California and a complete-game shutout over Northwestern. The Lady Bears finished the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at 4-1 (Feb ), the first time in five appearances at the tournament that Baylor had finished with fewer than two losses. Baylor had a season-high 15 hits, and Clare Hosack had a career high five RBI, including a grand slam, as Baylor defeated California (2/22/14), The Lady Bears defeated unbeaten and No. 11-ranked Stanford, 7-1 (2/21/14) to drop the Cardinal to 13-1 on the season. Baylor won its second-straight game over nationally ranked Missouri Feb. 20, 3-2. Baylor won its ninth Getterman Classic in Waco Feb with a key win over nationally ranked Missouri (2-1, 2/16/14); Whitney Canion, Ari Hawkins and Kaitlyn Thumann were named all-tourament. Whitney Canion surpassed 1,200 career strikeouts in Baylor s 2-0 win over Iowa (2/15/14). Whitney Canion became Baylor s all-time leader in shutouts with her 31st in a 5-0 win over Arkansas (2/9/14). She struck out six and allowed only two hits, which helped her pass Stacey Allison s ( ) mark of 30. Clare Hosack tied Baylor s single-game record with three doubles in a 17-0 win over UC Davis (2/8/14) tying Kelsi Kettler (vs. UNT, 2/23/12) and Nan Wilkins (vs. Oklahoma City, 4/2/02). Jordan Strickland won Big 12 Player of the Week honors Feb. 11 after helping BU go 4-1 at UNLV s Sportco Kick-Off Classic. She hit three homers and drove in nine runs to open the weekend, including her first career grand slam. Baylor went 4-1 at UNLV s Sportco Kick-Off Classic (Feb. 7-9) to start the season. That season, BU beat Lamar three times with the last meeting on April 13, 1984 where the Lady Bears won 7-0. Baylor is coming off a three-game road sweep of Texas Tech in Lubbock, which marked the first time Baylor had taken all three games of three-game series on the road since the league began that format in Lamar was swept by Sam Houston State over the weekend in a three-game Southland Conference series. 2 Bears Streaks / Milestones / Records Watch STREAKS Sarah Smith s 13-game on base streak was halted in the final game of the series at Texas Tech. Heather Stearns has a five-game win streak from the circle. Linsey Hays has hit safely in her last five games. Clare Hosack has hit a home run in each of her last four games and has five homers in that four-game span. MILESTONES Whitney Canion s two victories from the pitcher s circle at Texas Tech this weekend (107) keeps her sixth-place all-time on the Big 12 s career wins list, needing just three wins to tie with Nebraska's Jenny Voss (110) for fifth. Canion s 1-hitter Sunday was the 7th of her career, and it also marked her 36th career shutout. Holly Holl s home run in a 4-3 loss to Sam Houston State Tuesday was the 10th home run of her career. Liz Paul (196) needs four strikeouts to reach 200 for her career. Moore, who was selected to guide the Lady Bears program in June 2000, begins the 2014 season with a career record of (.684), including a (.665) record at Baylor. His teams have had a winning record in each season of his Division I coaching career. During Moore's tenure, the Lady Bears have received 13 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and 38 times players have garnered National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region honors. In addition, Baylor players have earned 55 all-conference selections during his tenure while numerous Lady Bears have earned academic all-conference honors. The 2013 squad posted the sixth-highest win total in program history with 42 victories, and three players earned NFCA All-Region honors on the way to Baylor s eighth NCAA Regional Tournament appearance under Moore s leadership. Moore saw Kathy Shelton earn first-team All-Central Region honors by the NFCA while Whitney Canion and Holly Holl earned second-team nods. The Lady Bears landed four on the All-Big 12 team including first-teamers Canion and Shelton, and the Freshman of the Year in Sarah Smith. Baylor had a Big 12-leading 10 selections to the Academic All-Big 12 team, including nine first-teamers. Moore picked up his 500th win as Baylor s head coach March 16, 2013 in Honolulu, Hawaii when the Bears defeated Hawai i 5-3. Prior to coming to Baylor, Moore spent two-plus seasons as head coach at LSU and four years total with the Tigers' program. Moore led LSU to the Southeastern Conference championship in 1999 and While at LSU, Moore amassed a (.820) record. Before his stint at LSU, Moore spent one season as the head coach at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss. Moore was that season and guided William Carey to a second-place finish in the Gulf South Conference. Moore has plenty of experience with coaching and playing softball, as well as several other sports. He played for the world famous "The King and His Court" fastpitch softball team. He was a pitcher for the team that traveled the globe showcasing its talents. He also played in the Mississippi Men's Fastpitch and McComb (Miss.) Men's Fall Fastpitch Softball leagues for 12 years. Moore's own athletic career saw him play both football and baseball at Southwest Mississippi Community College before playing tight end at Northwestern (La.)
