1 New Fungicides fr Anthracnse Cntrl, Fungigatin, Fairway Yellwing, and Chemical Cntrl f Typhula blight, Helminthsprium melting-ut, and Sclertinia dllarspt. J. M. Vargas Jr., R. Detweiler and C. Bilgrien Department 6f Btany and Plant Pathlgy, M.S.U. Snw Mld Fungicide Trials - -0 The -0 snw mld fungicide trials were cnducted at the Byne Highlands Resrt n Penncrss creeping bentgrass mwed at / inch. Treatments were applied t 6 feet x feet plts in three replicatins f a randm blck design n Octber,. The wettable pwders and flwables were applied with a small-plt C0 sprayer at a vlume f 0 gal/acre. The granular applicatins were made with a ft Sctt's drp-type spreader. The plt ratings were taken n April, 0 (Tables, and ). Results Temperatures were mderate up thrugh mid-december,. This was fllwed by freezing temperatures befre the snw fell in mid-january. Therefre, when the snw fell it was n frzen grund. Under these cnditins, the tw prevalent snw mlds were Typhula blight caused by Typhula ishikarensis, and Fusarium patch caused by Fusarium nivale. The majrity f the Typhula blight in the Harbr Springs area has been due t Typhula incarnata ver the past years. Perhaps the frzen grund prir t snw fall caused the ppulatin shift. There was als mre Fusarium patch than in previus years. The PCNB prducts (Pr Turf F+FII, Acti-dine RZ, and Terraclr W), the mercury fungicides (Cal-clr, Cal-gran), and the Dacnil cmbinatin prducts (Dacnil plus Tersan r Chipc 60) were the highest ranking fungicides f thse that gave significant ttal snw mld reductin cmpared t the untreated cntrl. In tables and when the specific snw mlds are factred-ut, Dacnil and CGA-6 are seen t have activity against Typhula blight but nt Fusarium patch. 0

5 Helminthsprium (Melting-Out) Fungicide Study - 0 The 0 Helminthsprium melting-ut (Helminthsprium vagans) fungicide study was cnducted at the MSU Sils Research Farm n Park Kentucky bluegrass maintained at a -/ inch height f cut. Fungicide treatments were applied n a bi-weekly schedule n May 6, May and June, except as nted n the data charts. All materials were applied with a C0 small-plt sprayer at a vlume f 0 gal/acre. The plts were feet x 6 feet and were replicated three times in a randmized blck design. The plts were rated n June 0. Results and Cnclusins There was severe Helminthsprium melting-ut disease pressure during the spring f 0. Many fungicides which nrmally have ratings f and had much higher ratings. Only fur chemicals under this severe pressure gave significant cntrl cmpared t the untreated check: Chipc 60 at the z rate, CGA-6 at the and gm ai (active ingredient) rate and Acti-dine RZ at the. z rate. 6 Helminthsprium Melting-Out Acti-Dine Fungicide Study 0 Hartland Glen Glf Curse, Hartland, MI The 0 Up-Jhn Acti-dine melting-ut study was cnducted n a Barn Kentucky bluegrass fairway at Hartland Glen Glf Curse in Hartland, MI. On May, the entire plt area, except fr the check plts, was treated with a tank mix cmbinatin f Acti-dine RZ ( z/a) and Acti-dine TGF ( z/a). In subsequent weeks, Acti-dine RZ ( z/a) was applied at weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly and mnthly intervals in replicatins each. These applicatins cntinued thrugh June, at which time the weekly plts had received Acti-dine RZ treatments, the bi-weekly plts had received treatments, the tri-weekly plts had received treatment, and the mnthly plts had received treatment. The three remaining Acti-dine RZ + Acti-dine TGF treated plts received n additinal treatments after May. All treatments were applied with a C0 small-plt sprayer at a vlume f 0 gal/a. The plts were rated n June (Table ). Results and Cnclusins The acti-dine RZ treatments all gave significant cntrl ver the untreated check except the Acti-dine mnthly applicatin which received ne additinal treatment after the initial Acti-dine RZ and Acti-dine TGF treatment n May. There appears t be merit in further investigatin f this prgram n a mre susceptible Kentucky bluegrass cultivar t see if there are greater differences amng treatments. Table. 7 Dllarspt Fungicide Studies - 0 Tw Sclertinia dllarspt (Sclertinia hmecarpa) studies were cnducted, ne n an annual bluegrass fairway and the ther n a Trnt creeping bentgrass green. Liquid applicatins were made with a C0 small-plt sprayer at a vlume f 0 gal/acre. Granular frmulatins were applied with a Sctts ft drp-type spreader. Bth studies were laid ut in three replicatins f a randm blck design. The annual bluegrass Sclertinia dllarspt study was cnducted at Burrughs Farms Glf Curse in Brightn, MI, n an irrigated Pa annua fairway maintained at / inch height f cut. Treatments were applied preventatively t 6 feet x feet plts n July, July, August, and September, except as nted n the data charts. The Sclertinia dllarspt ratings were taken n September. The Trnt creeping bentgrass dllarspt study was cnducted at the MSU Crps and Sils Field Labratry n an irrigated putting green which was infected prir t treatment. Treatments were applied curatively n September 0 and September. The dllarspt ratings were made n September. Results and Cnclusins Trnt Creeping Bentgrass Sclertinia Dllarspt Study Table 6 shws the mst effective fungicides fllwing tw fungicide applicatins at a day interval. The dllar spt infestatin was exceptinally heavy this seasn. The entire plt areas in the untreated check and ineffective fungicide plts became almst cmpletely cvered by the disease. The systemic fungicides and cmbinatin (systemic and cntact) fungicides gave the best cntrl under the severe disease pressure. 12 Dacnil-Rnilan Cmbinatin Dllarspt Study - 0 The Dacnil FL - Rnilan cmbinatin dllarspt (Sclertinia hmecarpa) study was cnducted at the Crps and Sils Field Labratry in East Lansing, MI, n an irrigated Trnt creeping bentgrass putting green. The plt was laid ut in three replicatins f a randm blck design. The entire plt area was unifrmly infected with dllarspt at the time f treatment. Treatments were applied curatively t feet x 6 feet plts n August, September, Septmber and September. All treatments were applied with a C0 small-plt sprayer at a vlume f 0 gal./acre. The ratings were taken n Octber (Table 0). Results and Cnclusins All treatments gave significant cntrl cmpared t the untreated check. Rnilan alne r in cmbinatin with Dacnil ranked higher than Dacnil alne. The,, and day spray intervals under the severe disease pressure prbably accunted fr Rnilan's higher ranking. Dacnil FL Gallnage Study - 0 The Dacnil FL gallnage study was cnducted n an irrigated Trnt creeping bentgrass putting green at the MSU Crps and Sils Field Labratry in East Lansing, MI. The plt area was unifrmly infected with dllarspt (Sclertinia hmecarpa) prir t treatment. Treatments were applied curatively t feet x 6 feet plts in three replicatins f a randm blck design. Treatments were made n August, August, September and September using a C0 small-plt sprayer. The ratings were taken n September (Table ). Results and Cnclusins All rate and gallnages gave significant cntrl cmpared t the untreated cntrl. The 6 z/000 sq ft rate gave better, if nt always significant, cntrl at the % level than the z/000 sq ft rates. The nly treatment giving significant cntrl ver all f the z Dacnil rates was Dacnil 6 z/000 sq ft rate in gal f water. Apprximately week intervals were used in this study which pushed Dacnil t its limits under the severe dllar spt pressure, but under such stress there is a trend that indicates Dacnil at the 6 z/000 sq ft rate is mre effective when applied with lwer water gallnage. All treatments gave significant cntrl cmpared t the untreated check. This study was initiated earlier than the Acti-dine - Dacnil - Bayletn study (Table ) and received the same number f treatments, the majr difference being the lnger interval between applicatin in this study (6, and days) versus the shrter (, and 0 days) intervals in the Acti-dine - Bayletn - Dacnil study. Dacnil gave cntrl at the + z/000 sq ft rate at shrter intervals (Table ) cmparable t the and 6 z/000 sq ft at lnger intervals (Table ). The lnger intervals in the Dacnil - Rnilan study shw similar results with Dacnil (Table 0). All studies were cnducted n the same green.

14 Anthracnse - Fungicide Studies - 0 The 0 anthracnse (Cllettrichum graminicla) fungicide studies were cnducted n the Bay Pinte Glf Club in West Blmfield, MI, and n the EI Drad Glf Curse in Masn, MI, n irrigated annual bluegrass fairways maintained at a / inch height f cut. The studies were laid ut in three replicatins f a randmized blck design. The liquid applicatins were made with a C0 small-plt sprayer at a vlume f 0 gal./acre while the granular frmulatins were applied with a Sctts ft drp-type spreader. The plt size was 6 feet x feet. Treatments were applied curatively at EI Drad als, n August and August. The ratings were taken n September. Results and Cnclusins Bay Pinte Glf Club Anthracnse Study The July 0 fungicide applicatins were made prir t the presence f any bservable disease symptms. N additinal treatment was made until August. The next scheduled treatment was fr July, but was nt applied because n evidence f the disease was present. Anthracnse did develp the week f August and all treatments were applied n August, with sel~cted cntact fungicides (as indicated n chart) applied a week later n August. Ratings were taken n August and September (Tables and ). It can be seen that effective fungicides which cntrl anthracnse will allw annual bluegrass survival during heat stress perids f the summer. EI Drad Glf Curse, Masn, MI Ratings were based n % imprvement since fungicide treatments were applied after disease utbreak. Thse treatments receiving minuses indicate hw much the disease increased in thse treatments. Fr example, the check which received n treatment had a % increase in the amunt f disease frm the start f the experiment n August t September when the readings were taken. The plt area was predminately annual bluegrass with 0-0% Kentucky bluegrass interspersed as patches. This affected the unifrmity f turf and f infectin. Only annual bluegrass areas in the plts were evaluated. The statistics reflect the variatin amng treatments by shwing n significant difference between 6.% imprvement in turf recvery and % imprvement. The data shw that fungicide treatment can cntrl an anthracnse epidemic and allw annual bluegrass recvery whereas the untreated annual bluegrass cntrl cntinued t deterirate. Thse prducts which were mst effective in stpping the anthracnse epidemic were: the benzimidazle systemic fungicides (Brmsan, Dusan, Fung 0, Tersan, Cleary's 6), prducts cntaining the systemic fungicide Bayletn (F-numbered cmpunds except F-, which cntained nly fertilizer, IBDU fertilizer + Bayletn, Bayletn + Acti-dine TGF and Bayletn alne), the systemic fungicide CGA-6, r certain rates f Dacnil (Table ). Similar trends can be Seen in the anthracnse data taken at Bay Pinte Glf Club (Tables and ) except that Rnilan, which had ne preventive treatment, als ranked amng the tp treatments.

21 Fusarium Blight Study - 0 The 0 Fusarium blight (Fusarium rseum) study was cnducted n the Hartland Glen Glf Curse, Hartland, MI, n an irrigated Barn Kentucky bluegrass fairway maintained at apprximately / inch height f cut (Tables and ). The study was placed n an area that had the disease the year befre and n which ld Fusarium blight scars were still present. Treatments were applied n July and July. The develpment f new rings was bserved shrtly after the first applicatin. Sme plts, including the experimental fertilizer-fungicide cmbinatins, were rated n July just prir t the secnd applicatin. The general fungicide study was nt rated because f nn-unifrm infictin and an verall lack f recvery in treated plts. Hwever, the entire area had recvered by mid-august, including the cntrl plts. The recvery frm Fusarium blight was attributed t the wet weather in late July and August. Results and Cnclusins There were n significant differences amng treatments due t recvery f initial Fusarium blight symptms. This recvery was believed t be due t the frequent rains which ccurred in late July and August. 0
