1 November 13-15, 2006 Overview of Ocean Engineering at URI OCEAN ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND: AN OVERVIEW By Dr. Jim Miller Professor of Ocean Engineering Where is Ocean Engineering? What is Ocean Engineering? Why Ocean Engineering? Who is in Ocean Engineering? 2 Why Ocean Engineering? Oceans cover 70% of the Earth and contain 1 million species of plants and animals 37% of the global population, over 2 billion people, live within 100 km (60 miles) of a coastline. Coastal hazards include both natural and man-made events that threaten the health of coastal ecosystems and communities: hurricanes, tsunamis, erosion, oil spills, harmful algal blooms, and pollution. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that America's coastal waters support 28.3 million jobs and generate $54 billion in goods and services every year. The US obtains 25% of its oil from offshore and that is expected to increase. The US Navy s budget is $125B per year and growing. Who is in Ocean Engineering? Many of our students are surfers, scuba divers, sailors and swimmers. All of us share a love for the sea and have the opportunity connect our professional lives to our avocation. OCEAN ENGINEERING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS PRESENT MS AND PhD DEGREES PRESENT BS (ABET ACCREDITED, 1994) HISTORY OF OCE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM 1966 DEPARTMENT FORMED (OLDEST IN THE US). 1980s OPTION PROGRAMS OFFERED WITH CIVIL, MECHANICAL, AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING B.S.
