Enduring Understandings Essential Questins Mdels can be used t represent systems Hw des energy cntribute t the frmatin f and their interactins. Earth materials, such as minerals, rcks, and Within a natural r designed system, the res? transfer f energy drives the mtin Hw can scientists determine what has happened and/r cycling f matter. in the past? Rcks and fssils tell the histry f Earth Hw des energy affect Earth s landscapes? and hw envirnmental cnditins have Hw d prcesses in the Rck Cycle affect earth s changed ver time. landscapes? The principle f unifrmitarianism states Hw des change happen t Earth s landscapes? that the prcesses that ccurred in the Changing Earth: What has the histry f Earth past are the same as the prcesses lked like? ccurring presently, and will cntinue t ccur in the future. The rck cycle is a slw, cntinuus, never-ending recycling f rcks that changes Earth s surface. Energy frm Earth s interir drives the rck cycle. Weathering changes rcks n Earth s surface. Ersin carries rcks away n Earth s surface. Melting f rcks can ccur n r belw Earth s surface. Igneus rcks can frm abvegrund frm quick-cling lava and undergrund frm slw-cling magma. Sedimentary rcks are made frm cemented and cmpacted sediments. Metamrphic rcks are frmed undergrund when a rck is expsed t intense heat and pressure. All rcks can weather and erde. All rcks can melt int magma. Gelgic change n Earth is sudden, the result f catastrphic events (catastrphism), r slw and gradual (unifrmitarianism). Gelgic changes that ccur tday will affect resurces and landscapes in the future. Transfer Gals Develping and using mdels Cnstructing explanatins (fr science) Identifying Patterns and Causes/Effects t make future predictins Using data and evidence f past events t make statistical predictins fr future events Citing evidence that stability may be disturbed by sudden events r gradual changes ver time Learning Objectives Use reasning, alng with the assumptin that theries and laws that describe the natural wrld perate tday as they did in the past and will cntinue t d s in the future, t cnnect

the evidence and supprt an explanatin fr hw the gelgic time scale is used t cnstruct a timeline f the Earth s histry. Use evidence and reasning t cnstruct an explanatin fr the given phenmenn, which invlves changes at Earth s surface. Identify and describe* the evidence necessary fr cnstructing an explanatin, including: The slw and large-scale mtin f the Earth s plates and the results f that mtin. Surface weathering, ersin, mvement, and the depsitin f sediment ranging frm large t micrscpic scales (e.g., sediment cnsisting f bulders and micrscpic grains f sand, raindrps disslving micrscpic amunts f minerals). Rapid catastrphic events (e.g., earthquakes, vlcanes, meter impacts). Identify the crrespnding timescales fr each identified gescience prcess. Use multiple valid and reliable surces, which may include students wn investigatins, evidence frm data, and bservatins frm cnceptual mdels used t represent changes that ccur n very large r small spatial and/r tempral scales (e.g., stream tables t illustrate ersin and depsitin, maps and mdels t shw the mtin f tectnic plates). Use reasning, alng with the assumptin that theries and laws that describe the natural wrld perate tday as they did in the past and will cntinue t d s in the future, t cnnect the evidence and supprt an explanatin fr hw gescience prcesses have changed the Earth s surface at a variety f tempral and spatial scales. Students describe the fllwing chain f reasning fr their explanatin: Surface prcesses such as ersin, mvement, weathering, and the depsitin f sediment can mdify surface features, such as muntains, r create new features, such as canyns. These prcesses can ccur at spatial scales ranging frm large t micrscpic ver time perids ranging frm years t hundreds f millins f years. Catastrphic changes can mdify r create surface features ver a very shrt perid f time cmpared t ther gescience prcesses, and the results f thse catastrphic changes are subject t further changes ver time by prcesses that act n lnger time scales (e.g., ersin f a meter crater). A given surface feature is the result f a brad range f gescience prcesses ccurring at different tempral and spatial scales. Surface features will cntinue t change in the future as gescience prcesses cntinue t ccur. Students will be able t: Explain the changes that happened in Earth s 4.6 billin-year past are the same changes that ccur in the present and will cntinue t ccur in the future. Identify weathering as the frce that breaks rcks dwn. Identify ersin as the frce that mve rcks frm ne place t anther. Identify weathering and ersin as frces that wrk tgether t make and mve sediment frm ne place t anther. Identify cmpactin and cementatin f sediments as the frces that create Sedimentary Rcks. Identify heat and pressure as the agents f metamrphism (Metamrphic Rcks.) Identify the cling and hardening f magma and lava as the frces that create Igneus Rcks. Pint t melting as the cause f any rck turning back int magma under the Earth s surface, r lava abve.

Identify Earth s internal energy as the driving frce fr the Rck Cycle. Identify the sun, water, and wind as agents f weathering and ersin n Earth s surface. Classify the Rck Cycle as a slw and gradual prcess but identify cunterexamples t explain when rcks can be changed suddenly, as seen in natural disasters. Explain the Rck Cycle and its prcesses verbally r in text. Library f Cngress: Primary Surces Materials/Supplies/Resurces Devils Twer 202/ Rck Cycle Vcab Guided Ntes* (distributed in previus class perid.) * Template fr Guided Ntes created by and dwnladed frm Liz LaRsa Cmputer with Internet Access fr LOC & WebQuest WebQuest Guided Wrksheet - designed by Tracy Tmm f The Science Spt - rsed Lessn Plan Engage: Hw can I get students interested in this? See attached Lessn Plan & WebQuest Guided Wrksheet fr detailed plans. Teacher will begin class where it ended yesterday Students will sing The Rck Cycle Sng. Teacher will engage students with histrical tie-in t Devils Twer, Wyming. Teacher will attempt t have students identify evidence fr the Rck Cycle in the pht f Devils Twer via cmpletin f the LOC Primary Analysis Tl. See & fr mre infrmatin abut Devils Twer. Students may have visited the gegraphic lcatin in persn. The site was als featured in Clse Encunters f the Third Kind (PG). Allw students t share their respnses and experiences with seeing this feature. Students will cmplete a guided and grade-apprpriate nline interactive that teaches students the new cncepts and assesses their understanding. The interactive ffers digital games and animatins that students manipulate at their wn pace. Digital activities tend t interest students, but teachers must make sure that students are attending t the tasks assciated with the activity. Explre: What tasks/questins can I ffer t help students puzzle thrugh this? See attached lessn fr detailed plans. Yesterday, the teacher utilized whitebards and NOTES templates t help students gain understanding f significant ideas and terms. Tday, students will use thse NOTES t make sense f what they see at Devils Twer and in the nline interactive. Students will explre the animatins and assessments at Learner.rg and Study Jams independently. It is imperative that the teacher circulates and checks fr student understanding while answering the questins. Equally critical, the teacher has t identify thse students wh appear t be struggling with the cncepts.

Explain: Hw can I help students make sense f their bservatins? See attached lessn fr detailed plans. Frm the very beginning, students are using their new knwledge and NOTES t make and explain bservatins n the Rck Cycle at Devils Twer in Wyming. The WebQuest Guided Wrksheet was written in a way t create understanding within the prcedure. S, as the students answer questins, they then make sense f what the task is and hw it fits in the Rck Cycle. Animatins help make sense f new and challenging cntent. Animatins can be replayed infinitely. Upn answering the questins, students are given multiple frmative assessments t help clarify material. The teacher can als help with mnemnic devices as the students wrk, such as MMMMMMelting MMMMMMakes MMMMMagma. This helps students. THE TEACHER MUST CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING AND CLARIFY MISCONCEPTIONS AS THEY ARISE. Extend/Elabrate: Hw can my students apply their new knwledge t ther situatins? See attached lessn fr detailed plans. This activity shuld segue int a discussin n Earth s histry, as the presence f Igneus and Metamrphic Rcks give us a glimpse int hw the areas have changed ver time. Ex The presence f Granite indicates vlcanic activity that is believed t have ccurred undergrund. Students shuld begin t realize that the rck cycle ccurs arund them every day abvegrund and undergrund Pebbles are evidence f weathering; cars transprting rcks stuck in tires shw ersin. Evaluate: Hw can I help my students self-evaluate and reflect n the learning? See attached lessn fr detailed plans. Students begin t make claims and cite evidence fr the Rck Cycle as seen in Devils Twer. The teacher guides the discussin and allws fr students t relate Devils Twer t the Rck Cycle. Students explre the Learner.rg site. This site has built-in assessments. With additinal space n the WebQuest Guided Questins, the teacher culd have students write a brief summary n what they learned that they didn t knw befre r cmplete a sample Exit Ticket. Fr students wh struggle n the assessments, they culd identify where they are cnfused, r what tricked them n the assessments.

Unit 2 Lessn Class Perids (45 minutes each) Interactive (Digital) Rck Cycle Activity Julie M. Senka

This activity was used in my class t further a deeper understanding f the prcesses that shape Earth s landscapes. It is standards-based and allws students t learn cncepts, practice essential vcabulary, and reflect n their interactive experiences. On Days 1-2, the tpic and Key Vcabulary were intrduced. Fr this activity, engagement, electrnic interactin, and explratin are encuraged leading up t the next lessn, which is a true hands-n pprtunity. SEP BIG IDEAS/DCI CCC Miscnceptins Using a (digital) mdel t demnstrate phenmena Ask Questins Why are rcks different? Hw d rcks change? Hw are rcks made? Analyze and Interpret Data Why d rcks lk the way they d? Cnstructing explanatins Obtaining, evaluating, and cmmunicating infrmatin. Earth s features are the result f gelgical prcesses. Change n Earth is generally slw but can ccur due t sudden events. There are 3 different types f rcks. Rcks frm in different ways, and their appearances give us clues t their histries and what made them. The same changes that happened in the past will happen in the future. Stability and Change Identify factrs that disrupt stability and lead t change ver time. Cause and Effect An external (frce) cause prduces a predictable effect in rcks. Structure and Functin Features f rcks determine their uses. Energy & Matter Rcks are changed due t the cycling f energy in the rck cycle. Scale Prprtin & Quantity Digital mdel is t small t represent the depth f the Rck Cycle. Rcks are the same and cme frm the same places. Rcks are distributed evenly thrughut the wrld. Metamrphic rcks are made frm magma. Rcks are bring and tell us nthing abut Earth. Change nly ccurs slwly. Day 1 Part 1 15 minutes Students shuld sing, The Rck Cycle Sng. The teacher shuld display the LOC image f Devils Twer n a Smart Bard r thrugh students cmputers. Students shuld cmplete the LOC Primary Analysis Tl and discuss the questins. OPTIONAL PART 2 10 minutes Hw des this picture f Devils Twer in Wyming shw the Rck Cycle? Pssible Answers include, but are nt limited t: The Twer has been wrn away The Twer is flat frm wind/water. Tree rts break dwn rcks. Weathering and Ersin due t pnd/water. Scratches in the Twer s side frm abrasin. Weathering due t acid rain? (Unlikely here, but kids like t reference this.) Undergrund vlcanic activity Igneus Rck Frmatin Sme frce pushed Devils Twer up frm undergrund. Optinal Mdificatin The teacher can shw Devils Twer frm the mvie Clse Encunters f the Third Kind. Cmbined with a reading f the histry f Devils Twer and

hw it is depicted in the mvie, a discussin can fllw n hw different cultures viewed the landmark. Native Americans used it as a wrshipping grund and cntinue t hld religius ceremnies there during the mnth f June, when it is vluntarily clsed t hikers. Upn meeting white men, the name was mistranslated t Bad Gd Twer, and then t Devil s Twer. A grammatical errr that left ut the apstrphe changed the name f the landmark. The mvie depicts Devils Twer as an extraterrestrial landmark that seems t have its wn pwers. Science says it was created by magma undergrund and ver time, expsed due t weathering and ersin. Part 3 WebQuest 25 minutes f Day 1 & 25 minutes f Day 2 The WebQuest that fllws was created by Tracy Tmm at the Sciencespt.net - Distribute the Rck Cycle WebQuest Guided Questins Wrksheet t students. The teacher shuld use trackstar.4teachers.rg r share the links n Ggle Classrm t help students with finding the site. Students fllw the directins n the WebQuest t view the Interactive Rck Cycle at Learner.rg. When students mve the muse ver the prcesses, an animatin and descriptin pp up. Students shuld cmplete all questins n the wrksheet. Cntext clues are given fr rck identificatin. Encurage students t lk at Ntes frm the previus class t slidify understanding. It is imperative that the teacher circulates and checks fr student understanding while answering the questins. Equally critical, the teacher has t identify thse students wh appear t be struggling with the cncepts. This cunts as a frmative assessment, and the teacher shuld check fr understanding. If there are glbal trends, the teacher shuld address thse at the start f class the next day. It is recmmended that students cmplete this independently, s the teacher can get an accurate idea as t levels f understanding. Upn cmpletin, students can: Draw an independent rck cycle Write a paragraph that utlines three things they learned. Cmplete a Exit Ticket (sample attached). Differentiatin Strategies Fr students wh struggle - Fr students wh struggle, this activity can be read t students thrugh the cmputer. Mnemnic devices MMMMMelting mmmmmakes mmmmagma may be beneficial. Hints such as Ign IGNite IGNeus are made frm fire What is the fiery stuff called? Anther beneficial hint is t use: SEDIMENTary is made frm SEDIMENT. Breaking dwn the Latin rts fr Igneus and Metamrphic may help students. Discuss answers t Site 1 as Guided Practice befre having students mve n t independently answering questins frm Site 2. Fr students edging tward Mastery Create a shareable T-chart r Venn Diagram that identifies key characteristics and prcesses fr the three types f rcks. Students culd create Exit Tickets (with an answer key and explanatin) that culd be utilized in class. Students can pair up with a student wh is struggling t reinfrce cncepts.

Assessment Optins fr assessment include: Grading items line by line. Ttal pints = 35 Recmmended Assessment The teacher shuld pay attentin t the fllwing questins: Site 1 Questins 1-3, which cver the prcesses and types f rck.
