About 2 3 mg of powder were obtained for each sample by microdrilling a polished slab under the binocular microscope, taking care to avoid cement-filled veins and cavities and larger bioclasts. A 0.8 mm bit was used for lime mudstones whereas a 0.5 mm bit was employed for the micritic matrix of bioclastic facies. Stable isotope analyses were performed at the Isotopen-labor of the Institut fü r Geologie, Mineralogie und Geophysik at the Ruhr University (Bochum). Approximately 0.5 mg of sample powder was heated for 18 h at 105 C. Samples were reacted online by individual acidic (H 3 PO 4 ) addition with a Finnigan Gas Bench II. Stable isotope ratios were measured with a Finnigan Delta S mass spectrometer. The results are reported in per mil (&) deviation from the Pee Dee Belemnite standard (VPDB). Precision (1σ), monitored by repeated analyses of international standards and of a laboratory standard, was 0.09 for carbon isotopes. Replicate measurements gave a reproducibility in the range of 0.1 for δ 13 C.
