1 Based at Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport, KBTP, Butler County, Pennsylvania EAA 857 NEWSLETTER 2018 International Young Eagles Day Ninety Young Eagle candidates descended on Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport on Saturday June 9, 2018 for the annual national EAA and Chapter 857 event. Five aircraft and their pilots flew from 10am until nearly 3pm to accommodate everyone. Thanks to the regional community, the airport, and especially all our chapter volunteers for supporting our efforts to promote the idea of General Aviation to our kids! 2 Presidents Message Wow, what a great weekend for International Young Eagles Day, 2018! The bad weather forecast that appeared to threaten us earlier in the week held off and although there was some rain over Lake Arthur at times, at KBTP all we got were a couple of short light sprinkles. The cloud cover helped to keep the temperatures down on the ramp while our many Young Eagles and their families awaited their rides. There was an early influx of Young Eagle candidates, such that Phil Kriley had at least two standing room only crowds back in the chapter room for his ground school segment of our event. Thanks Phil for your efforts and to our 5 pilots, Larry Schaefer, Dan Pappert, Dave VonKaenel, Frank Szczerba and Chuck Potts who took 90 young people on their Young Eagle Flights over the course of the day. I would also like to thank Don Wentz and Rick Schubert for marshaling of aircraft, and Scott Anthony, his wife Barb and their kids for marshaling of our guests through the gate to their waiting aircraft. As usual, Larry Gaichas and Chris McGeary managed the registration operation, while Bob, Santolla, Robin Kriley, and Bob Tedesco were at the cook s side of the hangar, preparing and selling our dogs and burgers. Finally, thanks and appreciation goes out to Don LaVoie, Jim Harjer, Dan Hood, Mark Beighey Brian Potts and all who in one way or another supported us with set up, clean up, and help through out the event. Your many hands as always are what lend success to this effort! Please members be aware that this newsletter is coming to you a week early because our June meeting has been advanced one week to this coming Tuesday (tomorrow!) due to Sentimental Journey getting underway on the 21st in Lock Haven. Multiple members attend that annual event in celebration of the Piper Cub. So, this June meeting follows close on the heels of our Young Eagles event and will be led by Vice-President Dan Pappert as I will be heading for Iceland where it is currently 47 and raining! The next chapter event of course is our Fly-in on Sunday, August 12, where breakfast will be served and planning will need to begin soon prior to the July AirVenture show that we all enjoy. Take care everyone! Ted Merklin, President EAA 857 EAA CHAPTER 857 BUTLER COUNTY-KBTP!2
3 Minutes of May 15, 2018 Meeting Opening: President Ted Merklin called the meeting to order at 19:05 and led the members in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Attendance: Fourteen members and one guest were in attendance. Secretary s Report: Everyone was asked to be sure that they had signed the sign-in sheet. The Secretary Report as published in the newsletter was accepted in a motion by Dan Pappert, which was seconded by Dan Hood. Treasurer s Report: A motion to accept the Treasurer s report was made by Chris McGeary and seconded by Dan Hood. Be advised: Chapter Dues are now long past Due! Newsletter Report: More articles are always welcome from anyone. Notify Ted Merklin if you are not receiving the newsletter. The newsletter is also published to the chapter web site at: Young Eagles Report: Larry Gaichas is the new Young Eagles coordinator. June 9th International Young Eagles Day is our first event of Technical Advisors: Chuck Potts and Bob Santolla Report: None Old Business: 2018 event schedule confirmed: International Young Eagles Day 6/9/2018 August fly-in 8/12/2018 September fly-in 9/9/ c3 statusis still being worked on. The way forward seems to be dissolving the chapter and then reconstituting as a new 501c3 entity, with a new name (such as Butler County EAA 857). This was as suggested recently by an Attorney consulting for our national organization and with whom Don LaVoie discussed the issue at last years AirVenture. New Business: The next meeting will be rescheduled to Tuesday, June12 due to the Sentimental Journey fly-in during our normal meeting day. Program: EAA Produced Chapter Video related to Adjournment: A motion to adjourn at 19:50 was made by Frank Szczerba, and seconded by Dan Pappert Respectfully submitted, Richard Schubert EAA CHAPTER 857 BUTLER COUNTY-KBTP!3
4 Did You Know (Engine stuff) By Bob Santolla Someday when you are sitting in your hangar with pilot buddies waiting for the weather to improve you can impress your fellow birdmen with your engine knowledge instead of there I was hangar stories and they will be amazed with your engine savvy. So start the conversation off with did you know. Did you know that the Lycoming engines through TI0-540 series all have the same cylinder bore dimensions, inches. Did you know that if you could convert an I0-360 from a 4-cylinder engine to a 6 cylinder engine (physically impossible) you would get an I This is more or less how the I0-540 series came into being. Did you know how Lycoming gets an and an from the same size cylinder bore. The answer is they stroke the engine by giving the a different crankshaft with a longer stroke hence more displacement. Did you know that the Continental C-series engines at one time included just the C-75 and C-85 which were the same engine producing 75-hp in one configuration and 85-hp in another. The number after the C was the horsepower. Did you know that the 6-cylinder Continental version was the C-145 (145hp) which later became the and that the is, in turn, merely a 6- cylinder (100hp). In fact, it uses the same size cylinders and pistons. The 0-200, of course, is just a C-90 which in turn was a wet-sump C-85. Did you know that there is a reason why cylinder s have color codes painted on the bottom of the cylinder. An Orange stripe at the cylinder base means it s a chrome-plated barrel. No stripe means it s a steel barrel and a blue stripe is a nitride barrel. A green stripe means the cylinder barrel on Lycoming has been ground.010-in. oversize. Yellow signifies.020-in oversize. Continental jugs that are bored.015-in over carry no special markings. Only Lycoming steel cylinders can be ground oversize, not the nitrided ones. Here is some more detail why. The Lycoming Direct Drive engine overhaul manual paragraph forbids the oversize grinding of nitrided cylinder barrels except on the 0-360B and 0-540B engines whose cylinders can be ground.010-in over. The nitride layer is only about.025-in thick and grinding would remove this hardened layer and create soft spots on cylinder walls. Did you know that an orange stripe painted near the spark plug means to use a hot reach spark plug. Did you know that the typical engine compression ratio for normally aspirated engines is 8.5 to 1. EAA CHAPTER 857 BUTLER COUNTY-KBTP!4
5 Did you know that most redline CHT temps are seldom more than 500F. Did you know that a typical redline oil temperature is 240F. Because oil starts to starts to cook and break down at fairly low temperatures, so it is necessary to keep oil redlines in the mid- 200s Fahrenheit. Did you know that most aircraft engine cooling is provided by not only air but also by oil through the oil galleries and fuel which is supplied in excess of the stoichiometric amount needed, precisely to achieve extra cooling of cylinders. Did you know that in terms of wear, the most significant metal-to-metal contact in an engine s moving parts normally occurs between piston rings and cylinder walls. There is considerable metal-metal contact between rings and cylinder bores, especially where rings reverse their direction of travel at the end of the piston s stroke. The last did you know, and this could be a gentleman s bet. Boring a cylinder oversize does not change the compression ratio. If it did, FAA probably would not allow the practice. Oversizing does affect displacement, of course, but that s another matter entirely. Changes to piston height, deck height, and stroke can all affect compression ratio. There is much to learn about your aircraft engine so keep studying, pay attention to Service Bulletin s, Service Instructions, and AD s and be the engine guru at your airport. Keep m flying!
