Travelling to school this week I have begun to see lots of little white snow drop flowers appearing in gardens and on the road sides - look out for them on your way to and from school. They are a sure sign that Spring is just around the corner. You might even notice some shops are selling daffodils too! Even when we can't see what is happening mother nature is working hard to make sure everything grows and thrives. I know the same thing is happening in school every day and you are all growing and thriving to be the best you can be. Keep up the good work! 29th March End of term 16th April Start of Spring Term 7th May Bank Holiday Monday 25th May End of Half Term 4th June Teacher Training Day 5 th June Back to School 20 th July End of Summer Term Page 1 of 12
2 Moons Astononomy buffs were ecstatic about last week s super moon, a blue moon and the lunar eclipses. Those three astronomical events converged in the sky on Wednesday, Jan 31st with a total lunar eclipses occurring in the morning and a brighter-then-normal full moon glowing at night-assuming clouds are not blocking your view. Here s what you need to know about this big, and rare, day for sky watchers: What is the lunar eclipse? A lunar eclipse takes place when the moon passes through the earth s dark shadow, blocking the light that the sun normally reflects off the moon s surface- the light that makes the moon appear to glow. Over a period of a few hours, the moon will appear to get darker and rust coloured. What is a blood moon? A blood moon is just another name for a full moon that's going through a total eclipse. The nickname refers to the moon s rusty-reddish tint, caused by the reflection of sunlight, during the eclipse. What is a super moon? The average distance between the Earth and the moon is 239,000 miles. When the moon tracks less than 223,000 miles from the Earth during its full phase, it is generally considered a "super moon" because it appears to be larger and brighter in the sky, particularly when it begins to rise over the horizon. What is a blue moon? Most months have one full moon, but once in a while two full moons will appear during the same month. When that happens, the second full moon is known as a "monthly blue moon." (Not to be confused with a "seasonal blue moon," which is the third full moon in a season where four full moons occur.) Page 2 of 12

4 With World Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 6 th February, take the time to make sure you are SAFE ONLINE! Some helpful hints: Check your Antivirus software is up to date. Check that your Social Media (Facebook.) privacy settings have been set. Newly installed messaging Apps may start off without any privacy controls. When installing a new App check and set the privacy settings immediately. If you do not do this, people may contact you who you do not know. This is often how grooming and cyberbullying start. Remember STOP, BLOCK and REPORT if you receive nasty messages. More information can be found online: Parental Controls Reporting Abuse Help Advice Students will discuss this topic and complete some activities with their Class Teacher on Tuesday. The focus this year is: We all have our part to play. Stay safe. Page 4 of 12
