This paper argues that matured resource - based cities are the major components of industry transition, and the matura2 tion period is the best period for industry transition. At the same time,a case study is performed on the city of Jining. Through analyzing the change trend of mining indices, the paper concludes that Jining has already been in the maturation period, and 34 industries have been classified into different categories in terms of their strengths of competitive advantage by the method of synthetic industrial competitive power. Finally,f rom the view of deep process of resources industries and the cultivation of suc2 ceeding industries, the development mode of industry transformation has been established based on above classification criteria. Many new characteristics of regional space pattern also appeared. This paper takes 67 cities/ counties within the Yangtze River delta as basic units, seeks economic and social development composite index of each unit in 1991,1998 and 2005 by the method of principal component analysis. The paper studies spatial polarization characteristics of the Yangtze River delta through comparing changes of composite indexes of unit s. It is shown in the research that polarization is still the primary character of spatial development in the Yangtze River delta. New developing polarization has appeared, however,it still centralizes in the core area which takes Shanghai as the central city. Thus,it intensifies the centralization of essential factors in core areas, while the edge present s a relative slow development situation. The economic activities are inclined to economic center, transportation corri2 dor,and river and coastal region obviously. The regional development strategy, the inf rastructure construction, direct foreign in2 vestment s,rural industrialization and the private - owned industrial cluster are the main reasons for spatial polarization. With enhancing the core status of Shanghai and regional inf rastructure construction, spatial structure of the Yangtze River delta may change obviously. Key words : spatial polarization ; core - periphery theory ; the Yangtze River delta
