How Tokyo VAAC s forecasters uses RGB products RGB Experts and Developers Workshop Tokyo, Japan 8 November 2017 Tokyo Volcanic Advisory Center Hiroaki TSUCHIYAMA
Areas of Responsibility of the Nine VAACs Red triangles represent active volcanoes. Duties for AoR: To collect information on eruption / volcanic activity To monitor eruption / volcanic ash using satellite imagery To forecast ranges of ash spread To issue Volcanic Ash Advisories (VAAs) Area of Responsibility (AoR) of Tokyo VAAC Encompasses active volcanic regions such as the Japanese archipelago, the Philippines and the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Information Issued by Tokyo VAAC Flow of Information for Volcanic Ash Advisories Volcano Information Pilot Reports Satellite Imagery Data NWP JMA / Tokyo VAAC Monitors and Analyze Volcanic Ash Clouds Forecasts Volcanic Ash Issues Volcanic Ash Advisories Aviation Weather Service Centers Civil Aviation Authorities and Other Related Organizations Meteorological Watch Offices in the Area of Responsibility Other VAACs
Volcanic Ash Advisory Volcanic Ash Advisory (VAA) is provided in text and graphic forms. VAA includes volcanic ash information, such as: Volcano name and position; Situation of volcanic activity and volcanic ash; Extent and movement of volcanic ash; and Forecast of volcanic ash in 6, 12 and 18 hours. Main elements of VAA VAA in graphic (VAG) VA ADVISORY DTG: Issued time VOLCANO: Volcano name PSN: Volcano position INFO SOURCE: Information source ERUPTION DETAILS: Eruption Details OBS VA DTG: Observed time OBS VA CLD: Current ash extent/movement FCST VA CLD: Forecast information RMK: Other information/comment NXT ADVISORY: When next advisory issued OBS (T+0) FCST (T+12) FCST (T+6) FCST (T+18)

Forecaster s impressions about RGB image AshRGB Advantage Since volcanic ash cloud appears in red color, it is easily distinguished from met clouds. Issues When the SO2 gas dominates the atmosphere, the green color becomes stronger and the red color becomes inconspicuous Volcanic ash (red) is influenced by under layer s color. If surface is reddish color, volcanic ash (red) will be enhanced. If surface is greenish or bluish color, volcanic ash (red) will be reduced. Despite having the same ash concentration, the depth of ash color may be different on AshRGB imagery
True Color CHIKURACHKI (Kuril Islands) Jul R:0.64 m G:0.51 m B:0.47 m CHIKURACHKI
Summary VAAC Tokyo uses satellite imagery for detection of volcanic ash cloud and determination of its extent. AshRGB VAAC Tokyo uses AshRGB image as an one of tool for the ash detection auxiliary. AshRGB image is useful to distinguish volcanic ash cloud and met clouds. But it needs to be careful, because the color of volcanic ash cloud is influenced by the color of SO2 gas or the color of the under layer. True Color VAAC Tokyo does not use true color image positively. Because, true color image is available only in daytime and volcanic ash cloud can be detect by the split image and AshRGB image in the first place.
Thank you.
