1 Flight Report September 11, 2014 Summary 1. HALO Flight Report AC Flight Strategy Weather Conditions Before the Flight Conditions During the Flight... 4

2 1. HALO Flight Report AC Flight Strategy In the September 11, 2014 occurred the third HALO flight in ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaign. The aircraft to off at 14:30:39 UTC (10:30:39 Local Time) from Manaus Airport and landing at 20:25:19 UTC (16:25:19 Local Time) with total duration of 5 hours and 55 minutes. In the first part of flight the aircraft was directly toward centersouth of Roraima state, where done several flights in different levels until 7,000 ft. During the return to Manaus the aircraft reached 11,000 ft. and done some measurements in the southwest of Rondônia state. The Fig.1.1 shows the realized flight path. 3 1.2 Weather Conditions Before the Flight The Fig. 1.2 shows the IR image with the (blue line) planned flight path plotted. The mostly clouds was weaker local storms before the Halo aircraft take off (14:30 UTC), with no precipitation related. We can see just deep clouds in the northwest of Amazon region, which not affected the HALO flight path. Also some fire spots (red dots) can be observed in the south and east of that region. It is showed the IR GOES-13 images (for one hour before), fire spots (for the day, red dots) and the green circles are de radar range (Boa vista, Manaus and Porto Velho). The blue line shows the flight path planned. Source: The Fig.1.3 shows the radiosonde for Ponta Pelada site at 12 UTC (1 hour before the flight). It is suggested a dry environmental between 800 and 200 mb. The CAPE and CINE had value of 472 J/Kg and 34 J/Kg, respectively, which is higher than last day. In low levels the wind are predominantly from east and southeast, in contract between mb the wind is from west/southwest. 3

Source: CHUVA/GoAmazon. 1.3 Conditions During the Flight At departure time, no precipitation was observed neither deep clouds close to Manaus airport (Fig. 1.4). At 17:06 UTC where the HALO aircraft reached the Boa Vista radar some dbz was observed. During the Landing some small clouds occurred closet Manaus airport (not showed). 4

6 The Fig. 1.5 shows images in visible channel from GOES-13 since 13 until 20 UTC. Cirrus clouds are evident since 14:30 UTC (time of flight) covering the Amazon state and some deep clouds are starting in the west of Amazon region. At 18 UTC (12 pm in Local Time) some local convection appeared in the west of Manaus, and just after 19 UTC we can see some small storm occurring close to Manaus. 7 The Fig. 1.6 shows the reflectivity (dbz) from Manaus radar since before the flight 19:24 UTC until 1 hour later 21:12 UTC. During the day small precipitation cells was observed moving from east to west. Before the flight as well as after those cell was observed, in the majority was formed close in Manaus.
