2 The Marfan Fundatin Paper Mbile Campaign 1 INTRODUCTION Yu can help peple living with Marfan syndrme and related disrders have a brighter future by raising funds fr The Marfan Fundatin s prgrams and services. Fundraising events als have an added benefit; they help raise awareness f these cnditins and, fr many peple, this can be life-saving. The mre peple wh knw abut Marfan syndrme and related disrders in the medical cmmunity and the general public, the mre likely peple wh have it will receive a prper diagnsis and prper medical care. The mst pwerful way we can raise funds and awareness is thrugh yu ur vlunteers. Yu are ur champins. Yur circles f relatives, friends, c-wrkers, and neighbrs, yur knwledge, yur persnal jurney, and yur cmmitment cannt be matched by anyne utside f ur cmmunity. One way yu can help is by setting up a Paper Mbile Campaign. This guide explains hw the campaign wrks and walks yu thrugh the steps t set it up. The Paper Mbile Campaign is an easy way t raise funds and awareness f Marfan syndrme and related disrders. All yu have t d is present the fundraiser t lcal stres, restaurants, and ther businesses. Ask the stre wner r manager if they are willing t ask their custmers fr at least a $1 dnatin and hang up a paper mbile with the dnr s name n it each time a cntributin is made. 3 The Marfan Fundatin Paper Mbile Campaign 2 STEPS TO SUCCESS 1. Chse a lcatin r multiple lcatins The mst imprtant thing t lk fr in a lcatin is hw they can help yu raise the mst mney pssible. Here are sme tips: Chse a lcatin that is family wned and where yu can meet with a decisin-maker. There are sme crprate businesses r chain restaurants that might be interested in participating, but these establishments typically require crprate apprval r the apprval f a decisin-maker wh is nt n-site. It is pssible t btain crprate apprval, but it typically requires a lengthy applicatin prcess and must be cmpleted up t ne year in advance f the campaign. Chse a business that has a built-in cnsumer base; that is, repeat and lyal custmers. Here are sme suggestins fr businesses t apprach: Restaurants and bars Pizzerias, delis, and bagel stres Hair and nail salns Cnvenience stres Medical and dental ffices Banks Gyms and fitness centers 2. Get permissin Every lcatin requires yu t get permissin. T d this, yu need t identify a cntact persn r, mre imprtant, the decisin-maker at the lcatin. Next, visit, call, r this persn and explain that yu are a vlunteer fr The Marfan Fundatin, a nnprfit rganizatin, and yu wuld like t set up a fundraiser. Share the sample letters (attached) and find ut if there is anything specific yu need t d t such as cmplete an applicatin t secure permissin. Nt sure hw t ask? Start with why the campaign matters. 4 The Marfan Fundatin Paper Mbile Campaign 3 3. Explain the lgistics f yur fundraiser It is up t yu t explain the lgistics t yur cntact persn at the businesses that agree t participate. Yur gal shuld be t make it as easy as pssible fr them t supprt the campaign and make it successful. Ask lcatins that agree t participate t set and meet a gal f $100 r mre. The paper mbiles are usually hung fr dnatins f $1 each. A stre might decide t ask fr mre depending n their average sale r t reach their fundraising gal faster. Fr instance, an upscale hair saln culd request a $5 dnatin per mbile, while a lcal deli might ask fr $1 per mbile. Fr their cntributin, custmers write their name n a mbile that is then hung in the stre. Determine hw lng the business is ging t ask fr dnatins. We suggest at least 2-4 weeks. While February is Marfan Awareness Mnth and a perfect time, they can implement this campaign during any time f year. Ask the manager t make sure that cashiers ask every custmer t make a dnatin. Yu can even g a step further and ask if the business can create a prize structure fr the emplyees wh sell the mst paper mbiles during their shift, each week, r fr the full campaign (at the stre s expense). Hang up The Marfan Fundatin s Knw the Signs pster and display ur Knw the Signs pstcards near the check-ut cunter and ther high-traffic areas t prmte the campaign and raise awareness. Suggest that the business hangs all f the mbiles in a specified lcatin that shwcases the ppularity f the campaign and the number f peple wh dnated. 4. Schedule a start date and end date It is imprtant t wrk with yur cntact persn at each lcatin t establish a start date and end date fr the campaign. They may be able t advise yu n the best times fr their type f business, that is, the mnth when they have the mst custmers. Make sure t crdinate a deadline with them als s that yu can return n that date t cllect the mney raised r make arrangements t have them submit their cntributins directly.

Be sure t define hw dnatins are tracked and cllected prir t the start f the campaign. Cash Simple and easy! Have cashiers cllect cash fr each dnatin. They can keep the cash dnatins in an envelpe in the cash register clearly designated fr The Marfan Fundatin. At the end f the campaign, the business shuld cnvert the cash t a check and mail t the address belw. Special Cashier Key In Have the manager create a special dnatin key fr the register and have cashiers use this key t ring-up dnatins and paper mbile sales. Then the manager can run a reprt at the cnclusin f the campaign t determine hw much was raised. Share pictures f the participating businesses (they will lve this) and encurage peple t supprt them and cntribute t yur campaign.
