22 technical information Temper Designation for Wrought Aluminium Temper: Since 9 British Standards have used temper designation systems based on the US system. The system has neen etended for use by CEN n European Standards (BS EN ). Cold work: The nomenclature denotes the degree of cold work imposed on the metal by using the letter H followed by numbers. The first number indicates how the temper is achieved. Code H H H H Description Strainhardened only to obtain the desired strength without supplementary thermal treatment. Strainhardened and partially annealed. Strainhardened and stabilised. Strainhardened and lacquered or painted. The old and new systems can be compared as follows: Symbol O F H H H H H9 H H H H H H H H Description Annealed, soft As fabricated Strainhardened, quarter hard Strainhardened, half hard Strainhardened, three quarter hard Strain hardened, fully hard Strainhardened, etra hard Strainhardened, partially annealed, quarter hard Strainhardened, partially annealed, half hard Strainhardened, partially annealed, three quarter hard Strainhardened, partially annealed, fully hard Strainhardened, and stabilised, quarter hard Strainhardened, and stabilised, half hard Strainhardened, and stabilised, three quarter hard Strainhardened, and stabilised, fully hard Old BS Symbol O M H H H H H9 H H H H H H H H 9

23 Heat Treatment For the heattreatable alloys the designation system uses the letter T following the alloy number to indicate the thermal treatment. The T is always followed by one or more digits indicating the specific sequence of treatments. The system allows for nine basic heat treatments as follows: Heat Treatment Designations technical information Term T T T* T* T T* T* T* T9* Description Cooled from an elevated temperature shaping process & naturally aged. Cooled from an elevated temperature shaping process, cold worked & naturally aged. Solution heattreated, cold worked & naturally aged to a substantially stable condition. Solution heattreated & naturally aged to a substantially stable condition. Cooled from an elevated temperature shaping process & then artificially aged. Solution heattreated & then artificially aged. Solution heattreated & then artificially aged. Solution heattreated, cold worked & then artificially aged. Solution heat treated, artificially aged and the cold worked. *Some 000 or 000 series alloys attain the same specified mechanical properties whether furnace solution heat treated or cooled from an elevated temperature shaping process at a rate rapid enough to hold constituents in solution. In such cases the temper designations T, T, T, T, T and T9 are used to apply to either process and are appropriate designations. Additional Digits after T One or more digits may be added to designations T to T9 to indicate a variation in treatment which significantly alters the characteristics of the product with respect to the original temper. These digits may be related respectively to one or more of the following: The solution heattreatment and/or the precipitation treatment. The amount of cold work after solution heat treatment. The stressrelieving operation. 0
