The Blue Devils are looking for their first win against both programs. Duke fell in a 3-1 decision last year at Coastal. They have dropped both games to USC, with the most recent being a 3-2 defeat in Mexico in February. Duke has five batters hitting over.300 in the last 10 games, which has seen the Blue Devils go 6-4. Brianna Butler leads the way with a.400 average after going 4-for-6 with two RBI and her first-career home run last weekend against Pitt. Jazmine Moreno sports a.375 clip in the last 10 games, followed by Deja Davis (.344), Reilly Metzger (.333) and Jameson Kavel (.303). Metzger and Kavel have been Duke s offensive leaders in non-conference play, hitting.348 and.309, respectively. Kavel and Davis lead the team with 21 non-conference hits, while Caroline Jacobsen and Rachel Abboud each have driven in 10 runs outside of ACC play. Moreno has been a beast behind the plate so far this season, leading the ACC with 10 runners caught stealing. She has three games this year with a pair of runners thrown out, all standing as single-game highs. Kavel has been a master when it comes to extra-base hits this season, leading the Blue Devils with nine doubles and three triples while tallying one home run for 13 XBH. Her doubles total is tied for 32nd in the nation. Kavel s three doubles against Kansas on March 2 set the program single-game record. It s been a solid start to the collegiate career of Deja Davis, as the rookie infielder is second the team with a.289 clip and leads the team with 26 hits and 15 stolen bases. She is currently one steal away from tying the single-season school record, set by Kavel last COASTAL CAROLINA SOUTH CAROLINA

5 TEAM NOTES DUKE DIVES BACK INTO MIDWEEK ACTION... After having last week free of midweeks, the Blue Devils jump right back in with a home-away split. Duke will host Coastal Carolina on Tuesday, before heading to Columbia, S.C., to take on the No. 16 South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday. This is the first home-away split of the season for Duke and the second in program history (April 10-11, at Charlotte, vs. Elon). TEAM TWO AGAINST THE CHANTICLEERS... Coastal Carolina holds a 1-0 advantage in the series, earning a 3-1 victory last year in Conway This will be Coastal s first trip to Durham This is the first Sun Belt team Duke will face this year Coastal is 2-0 against ACC opponents already this year, defeating Pitt twice in Orlando, Fla., at the UCF Tournament (Feb ) A win for Duke would be its first against a team from the Sun Belt conference. TEAM TWO AGAINST THE GAMECOCKS... South Carolina owns a 2-0 lead in the series, including a 1-0 mark in Columbia The first meeting between the programs came last year at USC, with the Gamecocks winning, 6-1 The two sides met earlier this year at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, with USC barely escaping with a 3-2 victory A win for Duke would be its first against a Top 25 opponent, as well as its first against a team from the SEC. PSA: DO. NOT. RUN. ON. JAZZ... Redshirt sophomore Jazmine Moreno has been second to none behind the plate this season for the Blue Devils, throwing out an ACC-leading 10 runners trying to steal. Three times this season, Moreno has recorded a pair of RTO s, all career highs. Most recently, No. 30 threw out a pair of runners in Duke s series-opening win against Pitt (March 15). Moreno has not just been impressive behind the plate, but at it as well. The catcher led Duke through the first weekend of ACC play with a 4-for- 8 (.500) showing against UNC, recording three doubles, a scorching.875 slugging percentage and not striking out once. Over the last 10 games, she is hitting an impressive.375 with four doubles for a.542 slugging percentage, while tallying two stolen bases and zero strikeouts. Jazz also tops the league in ACC-only games with four doubles. METZGER MADNESS... Reilly Metzger has her senior season off to a riveting start, standing toward the top of the charts when it comes to offensive production as Duke heads into the seventh week of play. Metzger leads the team with a.303 clip and has driven in seven runs so far this year. Over the last 10 games, the Boerne, Texas, native is batting.333, one of five Blue Devils with a.300-plus average during that stretch. In the final non-conference tournament of the year, Metzger had a weekend to remember. The utility player recorded a scorching.455 average at the plate, going 5-for-11 with six runs batted in and zero strikeouts. Metzger was the catalyst on three crucial plays for Duke over the weekend. She drove in the game-tying run in the top of the seventh with two outs against Mississippi State via sac fly and then had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh against Kansas to push the game to extras. Her weekend culminated with the walk-off single in the 7-6 win against the Jayhawks. GO DJ, THAT S MY DJ... It s been a solid start to the career of Deja Davis, as the rookie infielder enters the week with a.289 batting average and a team-high 26 hits and 15 stolen bases. Davis put together a 4-for-4 showing against NC Central four weeks ago, just the second four-hit performance in program history. She joined teammate Rachel Abboud in the four-hit club, who went 4-for-4 against Boston College on March 17, Davis has also been a stud on the base paths for Duke, going 15-for-15 in stolen bases, including a pair of 3-for-3 showings to set and then tie the school single-game record. With one more steal, Davis will tie Jameson Kavel for the program record of 16 set last season. Her 15 steals are second in the ACC. BOMBS BY BRI... After last weekend, it s not just about success at the plate for Brianna Butler. Highlighted by the first home run of her career in Duke s series-opening win against Pitt, Butler exited the second weekend of ACC play with a line of.667 BA/1.167 SLG/.667 OBP in ACC games. She leads the conference in batting average and slugging, with her OBP standing fourth. JAMESON DOUBLES DOWN... One of the most consistent forces for the Blue Devil bats this year has been sophomore outfielder Jameson Kavel. Kavel, who owns a.284 average and leads the team with 17 runs scored, nine doubles and three triples, has hit safely in 11 of the last 13 games. It was a day of doubles for Kavel in Duke s extra-innings win against Kansas. The sophomore outfielder went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, with all three of her hits being for two bases. Her three doubles made her the first player in school history to record at least three in a game. Kavel put up her second multi-double contest of the year in Duke s last Wednesday matchup against Elon. BUTLER SETTLING IN AS DUKE S ACE... As the season heads into the third weekend of ACC play, Brianna Butler has transformed into one of the top pitchers in the conference. With a team-best 5-2 record and 2.05 ERA, Butler has established herself as one of the top options in Duke s pitching arsenal, especially after dominant showings against UNC and Pitt. The righty tossed her second complete game of the season, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four, including getting two swinging in the seventh to close out Duke s first win against UNC in program history. She then threw a 9.0 inning complete game in the series-opening win against Pitt, while also adding a three-hit day at the plate with the first home run of her career. After tossing five scoreless innings of relief work against the Elon Phoenix last Wednesday, Butler reached a career-high 8.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Even though the streak is over, Butler has still been impressive over Duke s last 10 games, going 2-1 with a 1.60 ERA, 25 strikeouts and a.215 opposing average in 39.1 innings of work. Her 14 strikeouts in ACC games is tied for sixth in the league with Shelby Walters, while her 2.15 ERA is ninth in the conference. TRIPLE TROUBLE... Through the first six weeks of the season, the Blue Devils have established themselves as one of the top squads in the nation when it comes to tallying triples. Through 27 games, Duke has accumulated 11 triples, which stands second in the ACC and surpasses its 2018 total of nine. Duke s 0.41 triples per game average is third in the conference and ninth nationally. Jameson Kavel leads the squad with three triples on the year, cementing her status as the master of getting extra bases so far this season (teamhigh 13 XBH). Kavel s three stand second in the ACC and 26th nationally, while her 0.11 triples/game clip is fourth in the league and 65th in the NCAA. She is just two triples away from tying the program single-season record, which she set last year with five. DEFENSIVE EXCELLENCE... Earlier this season, Duke put together one of its best defensive stretches in program history, not committing an error in five-straight games from March 2 against Mississippi State to March 6 at Elon. The stretch of five-game stretch is a program record, besting the four-straight contests from last year set through the first four games in the Citrus Classic (Feb ) in Orlando, Fla. For the year, the Blue Devils sport a.969 fielding percentage, which is tied for second in the conference and 43rd nationally. GOT THE NEED, THE NEED FOR SPEED... The Blue Devils have been a terror on the base paths for opposing teams so far this year. Duke has 35 stolen bases, 14 more than where they stood through the first 27 games of last season. Earlier this year, the Blue Devils tallied six steals against NC Central, which set the program single-game record. That mark had been previously set the game before with five against Penn State on Feb. 17. After recording just one game of at least four steals last year, Duke has three so far this season. LATE LEAD = MAJOR KEY... Holding the lead late is a major key to success for Marissa Young s squad over the first two years of the program. This year, the Blue Devils are 9-1 when leading after five and 9-1 when taking the lead into the seventh. In their two years, Duke is 32-1 when leading after six innings. On the flip side, Duke has struggled when trailing late, going 2-11 when down after five and 1-11 when losing through six. In their win in the series opener against Pitt, the Blue Devils picked up their first win in history when entering the seventh trailing (1-30). Duke s loss to Elon was its first defeat when leading entering the seventh in program history.
