Jessica Wireman Panther Slap Hits Eastern Illinois heads back into OVC play after dropping their final non-conference game of the season to Illinois 9-7. With the loss, the Panthers fell to on the season while maintaining a 9-6 OVC record. EIU heads to Nashville for a packed weekend featuring doubleheaders against Belmont on Saturday and Tennessee State on Sunday. Five different Panthers recorded at least two hits against the Illini. Freshman Kayla Bear led the team going 3-for-5 at the plate. Bear s four putouts, three hits, and two RBIs combine for one massive day as all are new single-game highs for the young Panther. Jennette Isaac had a tremendous day herself finishing the game with a perfect on-base percentage. The senior outfielder recorded two singles and two walks in her four plate appearances. The Bruins are overall and 8-9 in the OVC still firmly in the postseason hunt falling at No. 7 in the conference. The Panthers are 4-0 against Belmont all-time winning both home and away doubleheaders in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Lexi Rouse leads the Bruin bullpen in strikeouts with 55 while also being second on the team with a.316 batting average. The red-shirt sophomore has 14 RBIs and four home runs on the season. Following Saturday s doubleheader the Panthers take on Tennessee State Sunday afternoon. TSU is currently and 3-14 in the OVC with a doubleheader against SIUE before taking on EIU. The Panthers are all-time when facing the Tigers. EIU has won the last 12 games against Tennessee State. Outfielder Courtney Gearlds leads TSU in multiple categories with a.345 batting average. Gearlds has recorded 41 hits, four triples, and 16 RBIs so far this season. Panther Rankings In OVC games this season Jessica Wireman is third in wins and strikeouts thrown. Wireman has seven conference wins while throwing 73 strikeouts against OVC batters. Wireman remains first in the OVC with seven shutouts so far this season. The sophomore is currently tied for sixth all-time at EIU for shutouts in a season with at least 10 more games to play. In OVC games this season the Panthers lead the conference in fielding percentage with.983. EIU has only committed seven errors in OVC games. Last Time Out EIU fell to Illinois in a mid-week non-conference game 9-7. The overcast afternoon game featured three lead changes, two Illinois home runs, and one come from behind win from the Illini. In her two seasons at Eastern, she has led the Panthers to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament both years. EIU finished in third place overall and second in the West Division during the 2014 campaign, and earned a No. 6 seed berth during the 2015 season. Ten different Panthers have earned post-season accolades under Nicholson s tenure, including four First Team and four Second Team All-OVC awards. Prior to coming to EIU, Nicholson was the head coach at CSU for seven seasons where she has helped build the Vikings program into a top team in the Horizon League. Nicholson posted a record of at Cleveland State. Making the NCAA Tournament and winning conference championships are something that Nicholson has familiarity with from her time at Cleveland State. She led the program to Horizon League regular season titles in 2008 and 2010 sandwiched around a Horizon League Tournament Championship in The 2009 tournament championship was Cleveland State s first as a member of the Horizon League as the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Nicholson coached the Vikings to tournament runner-up finishes in 2007 and During her tenure at Cleveland State, Nicholson coached three Horizon League Players of the Year and three Pitchers of the Year. In 2013 she coached the Horizon League Player and Newcomer of the Year. Nicholson herself has been named the Horizon League Coach of the Year two times (2008 & 2010). Prior to her time at Cleveland State, Nicholson coached one season at Butler in She had one season at NAIA member Ursuline College where she increased the program s win total from three to 25 in her one season. She began her coaching career as the head coach at Cuyahoga Community College ( ) where she posted 94 wins making the Region 12 Tournament in three of four seasons. She was the NJCAA Region 12 Coach of the Year in 2004 as her team finished sixth in the nation. Her collegiate coaching record is Nicholson played softball at Cleveland State where she earned her undergraduate degree in She was a two time All-Conference selection as a catcher. 7 ASSISTANT COACH... THIRD SEASON CLEVELAND STATE, 2003 STEPHANIE TAYLOR Stephanie Taylor rejoined her former teammate and long-time mentor as she joined EIU skipper Angie Nicholson s softball staff as an assistant coach during the late summer of She helped lead the Panthers to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament in back-to-back years as EIU finished in third place overall and second in the West Division during the 2014 campaign. The Panthers followed their stellar year with another run in the OVC tournament entering the postseason as the No. 6 seed during the 2015 season. A 2003 Cleveland State graduate, Taylor follows Nicholson to EIU after previously coaching alongside her former teammate at their alma mater the past six seasons. While at CSU, Taylor worked primarily with hitters and catchers, while also assisting with recruiting. During her tenure with the Vikings, Taylor helped lead CSU to 178 victories, including a 44-win campaign in She also helped the Vikings advance to three trips to the Horizon League Championship title game, ultimately earning the league crown and subsequent NCAA Regional Berth in The duo of Nicholson and Taylor guided multiple Vikings to numerous Horizon League accolades, including coaching two Players and Newcomers of the Year, three Pitchers of the Year, and seven First Team, 12 Second Team, and nine All-Newcomer Team members. She completed her coursework for a master s degree in sport management from Cleveland State in May, GRADUATE ASSISTANT - PITCHING COACH... FIRST SEASON CORNELL, 2014 JACKIE SERNEK Jackie Sernek joins the EIU softball staff as a graduate assistant pitching coach. Sernek interned under Coach Angie Nicholson during the 2015 season. A four year starter from at Cornell College she joins EIU s staff full-time following a year stint as an assistant coach at nearby Lake Land College. During her tenure at Lake Land, Sernek helped guide the Lakers to a season and a perfect 18-0 home record. She oversaw a Lakers team that ranked top-10 in multiple categories in the NJCAA including shutouts and opponent batting average. The team went on to win the Great Rivers Athletic Conference Championship as well as runners-up in the NJCAA Region 24 championships. During her career at Cornell Sernek s 2013 season was far and away her most productive as she broke Cornell s single season strikeout record fanning 130 batters. Sernek also broke the school record for lowest opponent on base percentage (.212.). She was named pitcher of the year for the Midwest Conference - South Division as well as First Team All-Midwest Conference honors. She was voted team MVP as Cornell went on to win the Midwest Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA Division III Tournament Berth. Sernek did not stop there as she continued her stellar pitching during the 2014 season once again earning First Team All-Midwest Conference honors and team MVP in her senior year. She was named Cornell Sportswoman of the year, as Sernek finished her career setting the standard for pitching at Cornell. She set the Cornell career record for shutouts in her four year tenure with 15 and is second all-time at Cornell with 321 strikeouts finishing her softball career with a 1.95 ERA.
