Jessica Wireman Panther Slap Hits EIU heads to Kentucky this weekend looking to keep their momentum going with doubleheaders against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. The Panthers are tied for first in the OVC with Jacksonville State after sweeping Southeast Missouri to improve to 5-1 in the conference. The 5-1 start to the conference season is the Panthers best start to OVC play since the 2013 season. EIU finished that year with a 20-3 conference record earning the OVC regular season championship. Junior pitcher Jessica Wireman has turned things around during the early portion of the OVC season as well. After dropping the conference opener against Belmont, Wireman has won four straight games to pull even on the year at 9-9. As a team, the Panthers are second in the OVC for batting and pitching. The Eagles are on the year and 3-3 in the OVC. EIU is all-time against Morehead State having won 13 of the last 14 games against the Eagles including last season s 7-0 win in the OVC tournament. MSU is led by pitcher Chelsea McManaway who is 12-5 on the year with 178 strikeouts. McManaway is the only pitcher in the OVC to average over 10 strikeouts per game. Eastern Kentucky enters the weekend overall and 3-2 in conference play with a doubleheader against SIUE Saturday before taking on the Panthers. EKU holds a series record over EIU, but the Panthers swept the Colonels in the regular season last year. EKU s Johnkyria Alston will be one to watch as she leads the OVC in RBIs with 31 and doubles with 13 this season. Panther Rankings With her two wins at Southeast Missouri Jessica Wireman has been on fire to open the conference season. Wireman is currently 9-9 on the year and 4-1 in OVC play having won her last four games in a row. The junior leads the conference in wins and innings pitched in OVC games. At sixth in the conference, Wireman needs only six more strikeouts to pass the century mark for the season. Amber Toenyes currently leads the team with a fivegame hitting streak to begin conference play. One of the team s three seniors, Toenyes is fourth in the OVC with eight hits so far in conference play. The Panthers did not attempt a single stolen base at SEMO this past Saturday. Kayla Bear remains second in the OVC for swiped bags going a perfect 25-for-25 in stolen base attempts this year. With 44 stolen bases already in her career she is eighth all-time at EIU for stolen bases. Last Time Out The Panthers picked up their fifth straight win to improve to 5-1 in conference play after sweeping Southeast Missouri in EIU s only doubleheader this past weekend. Ashlynne Paul was a major factor in EIU s first win over the Redhawks recording a career high four RBIs while hitting her first career home run at EIU. In her only at-bat of the doubleheader, Junior Michelle Rogers also earned career firsts against SEMO. After recording her first career hit at EIU against Tennessee State, Rogers upped the ante with an RBI triple. Eastern Illinois 2017 Softball

FIRST SEASON (NINTH OVERALL) KIM INDIANA STATE, 2001 SCHUETTE Kim Schuette, the winningest coach in Eastern Illinois softball history, will have a chance to add to that legacy as EIU Director of Athletics Tom Michael welcomed her back as the Panthers head softball coach on Aug. 26. Schuette begins her second stint as the Panthers head coach following three seasons as Purdue s head coach. Schuette was the Panthers head coach from winning 232 games including 122 OVC contests. She was named the OVC Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013 as the Panthers won conference regular season titles. During her time at EIU the Panthers finished in the upper division of the OVC race in six out of eight seasons making the conference tournament all but one year. She coached twenty All- OVC selections including OVC Pitchers of the Year Amber May (2011) and Hanna Mennenga (2013). Following her eight seasons at EIU Schuette has posted an record during her tenure at Purdue, including five wins over top 25 opponents. Her student-athletes were honored with nine All-Mideast Region, seven All-Big Ten, two Academic All-America, four Academic All-District and 34 Academic All-Big Ten accolades. Two of her players went on to play in the National Pro Fastpitch League. Purdue finished sixth in the Big Ten Conference in 2014 and twice advanced to the conference tournament quarterfinals. On March 5, 2016, Schuette earned her 300th Division I victory as Purdue defeated the College of Charleston. A former pitcher at Eastern Illinois, she ended her career playing at Indiana State, where she was a two-time Academic All-American and All-Missouri Valley Conference selection as a senior. Schuette graduated cum laude with a bachelor s degree in physical education at Indiana State in 2001 and received a master s degree in kinesiology and societal studies (sports management) from San Jose State in Schuette was the head coach at Quincy University in 2005 and an assistant coach at San Jose State from 2001 to Schuette and her husband Jason have two children PANTHER SUPPORT STAFF
