4 NTRODUCTON Purpose These reference tables have been compiled to provide accident investigators with physical characteristics and original dimensions of steering wheel and steering column energy-absorbing (EA) devices. Comparison of these data to postcrash dimensions demonstrates whether the EA devices have performed as designed, and if so, to what degree. This ows the investigator to record their performance appropriately on the NASS Special Studies Steering Column Data Form. Orsani zation This reference volume is divided into three parts. Part 1 includes directions for application of these data. Part 2 contains the compiled original dimensions for the steering wheel and steering column device. This section is classified first by the auto maker (AMC, Chrysler, GM, Ford), then by years ( ) within each manufacturer. For each vehicle, the following information is provided: Model name VN reference Body style Optional steering equipment Type of steering wheel Profile Energy-absorbing device Energy-absorbing device original dimensions Steering column energy-absorbing device type Steering column energy-absorboing device mounting type Steering column energy-absorbing device original dimensions
5 AC reference point AC original dimensions Steering column mounting method At the end of the data for each model year are diagrams of the EA devices used and directions for measuring them. Part 3 contains the Reference Tables 2-7. These include steering wheel descriptions and codes, steering wheel profile descriptions, steering wheel EA type codes, steering column EA type codes, steering column measuring methods, and AC reference point references and measuring methods. Refer to Reference Table 1 for appropriate codes. How to Use the Reference Tables The compiled reference tables are organized into four main sections by auto maker (AMC, Chrysler, GM and Ford). Within each main section, the data are further broken down by model year ( ). Proper use requires that the investigator determine model year, make, model, and optional steering equipment for each vehicle, verify the data visuy, locate the vehicle in the reference table (1), and transfer the data to the data form. When a value is not listed in Reference Table 1, the investigator must examine the vehicle to correctly identify or des- cribe the component. Note that measurements are in inches.?here the reference data were not available for inclusion in this publication, Lhe '' code has been used. The second set of tables (2-7) gives the code values for each specific element of the data form, so that uncommon steering systems not contained in the summary tables may be described. These tables also describe how to make and record certain measurements.
6 The use of the summary tables is strongly encouraged, because many of the features of a steering system are not readily identifiable by examin- ing a vehicle. When a data value is not listed in Reference Table 1, or is otherwise indicated, the investigator - must examine the vehicle to correctly identify or describe the component. Note on the Use of Code 5, or 9 All possible effort has been made to ascertain the correct entries for the Compiled Reference Table. n certain instances where values are not available, the notation 5, or 9 is used to indicate the unavailability of the data value. When such a value is noted, the investigator should make every effort to ascertain the correct value for the variable (as defined in the individual reference tables) by inspection of the vehicle. This value, obtained by inspection, should be placed on the data form in place of the value 5,, or 9. Only when, by inspection, the correct value cannot be ascertained should the code values 5,, or 9 be placed on the data form. Code is used as a Not Applicable code.
