Read further exceptin wrds, nting the unusual crrespndences between spelling and sund, and where these ccur in the wrd. Cmprehensin cntinued Understand what they read, in bks they can read independently, by: checking that the text makes sense t them, discussing their understanding and explaining the meaning f wrds in cntext asking questins t imprve their understanding f a text Cmprehensin Develp psitive attitudes t reading and understanding f what they read by: drawing simple inferences such as inferring characters feelings, thughts and mtives frm their actins, and justifying inferences with evidence listening t and discussing a wide range f fictin, petry, plays, nn-fictin and reference bks r textbks reading bks that are structured in different ways and reading fr a range f purpses using dictinaries t check the meaning f wrds that they have read predicting what might happen frm details stated and implied identifying main ideas drawn frm mre than ne paragraph and summarising these identifying hw language, structure, and presentatin cntribute t meaning increasing their familiarity with a wide range f bks, including fairy stries, myths and legends, and retelling sme f these rally identifying themes and cnventins in a wide range f bks preparing pems and play scripts t read alud and t perfrm, shwing sme understanding thrugh intnatin, tne, vlume and actin discussing wrds and phrases that capture the reader s interest and imaginatin recgnising sme different frms f petry [fr example, free verse, narrative petry] Retrieve and recrd infrmatin frm nn-fictin. Participate in discussin abut bth bks that are read t them and thse they can read fr themselves, taking turns and listening t what thers say.
2 Year 3 Writing Spelling Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand hw t add them (Natinal Curriculum English Appendix 1). Spell further hmphnes. Spell wrds that are ften misspelt (Natinal Curriculum Appendix 1). Place the pssessive apstrphe accurately in wrds with regular plurals [fr example, girls, bys ] and in wrds with irregular plurals [fr example, children s]. Use the first tw r three letters f a wrd t check its spelling in a dictinary. Write frm memry simple sentences, dictated by the teacher, that include wrds and punctuatin taught s far. Handwriting Use the diagnal and hrizntal strkes that are needed t jin letters and understand which letters, when adjacent t ne anther, are best left unjined. Increase the legibility, cnsistency and quality f their handwriting [fr example, by ensuring that the dwnstrkes f letters are parallel and equidistant; that lines f writing are spaced sufficiently s that the ascenders and descenders f letters d nt tuch]. Cmpsitin Plan their writing by: discussing writing similar t that which they are planning t write in rder t understand and learn frm its structure, vcabulary and grammar discussing and recrding ideas Draft and write by: cmpsing and rehearsing sentences rally (including dialgue), prgressively building a varied and rich vcabulary and an increasing range f sentence structures see Appendix 2 f the Natinal Curriculum rganising paragraphs arund a theme in narratives, creating settings, characters and plt in nn-narrative material, using simple rganisatinal devices [fr example, headings and sub-headings] Evaluate and edit by: assessing the effectiveness f their wn and thers writing and suggesting imprvements prpsing changes t grammar and vcabulary t imprve cnsistency, including the accurate use f prnuns in sentences Prf-read fr spelling and punctuatin errrs. Read alud their wn writing, t a grup r the whle class, using apprpriate intnatin and cntrlling the tne and vlume s that the meaning is clear. Vcabulary, grammar and punctuatin Wrd Frm nuns using a range f prefixes [e.g. anti-, aut-]. Use a r an accrding t whether the next wrk begins with a cnsnant r vwel. Identify and use wrd families based n cmmn wrds, shwing hw wrds are related in frm and meaning, [e.g. slve, slutin, slver, disslve, insluble] Sentence Express time, place and cause using cnjunctins [e.g. when, befre, after, while, s, because]; adverbs [e.g. then, next, sn, therefre]; r prepsitins [e.g. befre, after, during, in, because f] Extend sentences with mre than ne clause by using a wider range f cnjunctins, including when, if, because, althugh Text Start t use paragraphs t grup related material. Use headings and sub-headings t aid presentatin. Use the present perfect frm f verbs instead f the simple past [e.g. He has gne ut t play vs He went ut t play]. Punctuatin Begin t use inverted cmmas t punctuate direct speech.
3 Terminlgy fr pupils Prepsitin, cnjunctin, wrd family, prefix, clause, subrdinate clause, direct speech, cnsnant, cnsnant letter vwel, vwel letter, inverted cmmas/speech marks.
