25 Preparing for the Oral Midterm Exam Choose 2 of the following topics, 1 from each group (5 minutes each). Be prepared to 1) explain their importance in understanding the deep history of Italy and humanity in Europe 2) ask me a couple of questions about them, and 3) answer a couple of questions from me. Adria (the Adriatic Promontory) Italy, Italians and the geology Faults and landscapes Fossils, especially forams and ammonites Mountains and plate tectonics Sedimentary rocks The Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary and life on Earth Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis Mitochodrial DNA and Y-Chromosone DNA The lifeways of hunter-gatherers at the end of the last Ice Age The transition from foraging to farming (from Paleolithic to Neolithic) Distinctive features of the genus homo and of homo sapiens as a species

26 Preparing for the Written Midterm Exam One page will have a copy of figure 6 on page 272 of Seven Daughters. Be prepared to note where each of the clan mothers probably lived, and the percentage of contemporary Europeans descended from each, on the figure, and write 2-3 paragraphs on what of any three of their imagined lives reveal about the deep past of humans in Italy and/or elsewhere in Europe.

27 Preparing for the Written Midterm Exam One page will have either the figures on p. 103: the south side of Bottaccione Gorge, and p. 140: stratigraphy of the mountains of St. Francis; or the figures on p. 122: a cross section of the landscape from Gubbio to the Burano Gorge, and p. 214: a deep seismic cross section of the landscape between the Tiber River the Burano Gorge. (as below) Explain the figures on the page (and how they related to one another) and write a paragraph on their significance in understanding the deep history of Italy
