3 Evidence I: Tectonic Plates In a Level 0 Silence Voice, write down in your journal what is highlighted. The Earth s crust is divided into tectonic plates. These plates are in constant motion and move to create various crustal features. A boundary is where 2 tectonic plates meet.

4 Connection to Us: In a level 0 silence voice, take 7 minutes to quickly sketch the following 1. California 2. Circle where San Diego is 3. San Andreas fault with arrows. The San Andreas Fault is where 2 different tectonic plates meet. Looking at the map, if the continents continue to move for millions of years, what will eventually happen to California? San Andreas Fault Use the following sentence frame to answer in your notes. After millions of years, California will eventually because

5 Evidence I: Tectonic Plates But...what causes these tectonic plates to move??? First...we must look UNDER the crust!

6 Evidence I: Tectonic Plates Our Earth is made up of four main layers The Crust sits at the very top, this is where our tectonic plates are located. The Mantle is underneath and is mostly made of magma and rock. The Outer Core is fluid and made of mainly molten iron and nickel. The Inner Core is the innermost layer and made mainly of solid iron.

7 Modeling Time! In a level 1 Whisper Voice, you will work with a partner to complete your own model of the Earth s layers. (10 Min) You will color and label each layer just like the picture! Crust = Brown Mantle = Yellow Outer Core = Orange Inner Core = Red

8 Evidence I: Tectonic Plates - - Now let s focus on the Mantle! The Mantle s temperature can range between 500 and 900 degrees Fahrenheit, which is why this layer is mainly magma and rock. The deeper you go, the hotter it becomes! * Now one thing you must know in science: Hot rock rises and cool rock sinks. As the molten rock becomes hotter inside the Earth, the magma will rise up and eventually will cool. When it cools, the magma sinks. * What does this create?

9 Evidence I: Tectonic Plates Convection Currents: Movement of the Earth s mantle caused by hot molten rock rising and cool molten rock sinking. How do you think this affects our tectonic plates? Hint: What layer sits on top of the Mantle? Because the crust sits on the mantle,the constant movement of the hot magma causes tectonic plates on the surface of the Earth to shift.

20 Analysis and Reflection How did continental drift lead to the theory of plate tectonics? Contrast the three types of boundaries. Predict how plate movements will change the Earth s surface 1 million years from now and explain what causes this change. Hint: Use one of the examples to help you out. Reflection: Imagine you went to check out one of the three types of boundaries you just learned about. Write a tweet or draw a picture about what you see! Must include the type of boundary you re at.
