1. Introduction Between the 22 nd and the 28 th of May 2015 an exploration program was undertaken by the author with the aim of testing the size and orientation of a historical, gold rich, quartz-carbonate vein (MINFILE 093E-043) as well as to assess the prospectivity of the Eliza Property located on the western side of Eliza inlet. Over a period of one week the author collected field mapped exposures along logging roads, collected 30 rock samples and 5 stream sediment samples of the from inside the historic workings and surface exposures. Compositional analysis of the samples confirmed the existence of high grade gold in both the upper and lower adit areas. The data agree with the assessment of Stephenson (1945) and Northcote (1987) that the rock in the upper adit area is of higher grade and appears to be less structurally affected than the lower zone. Samples from the upper dump area contained variable amounts of gold but were generally low grade. N The Eliza Property 2 km Figure (1) Map of the property and surrounding area. 4

1.1 Location and Access The Project area is located on Vancouver Island, BC, approximately 17 km south-west of the town of village of Zeballos. The property follows along the west side Port Eliza inlet, approximately 6 km from the its mouth. Access to the inlet is by boat direct from the port of Zeballos. A major logging road cuts across the property. The historic mine site is accessed by a series of overgrown foot paths and rail tracks. N 200 m Figure (2) 3D map of Primary work site. Targets are highlighted in red. 1.2 A History of Gold Mining in the Zeballos Gold District Mineral exploration in the Zeballos and Port Eliza areas was spurred by a gold mining boom that began with the discovery of the first rich gold-quartz veins near the village of Zeballos in Mining in the district commenced in , the main high-grade vein of the Privateer mine was discovered in By 1938, at the peak of gold mining in the area, there were a more than thirty mining properties at various stages of development. Activity continued at a high level until 1943, when all properties closed because of a shortage of labour. The Privateer Mine was reopened in 1945 but again suspended operations in The total production of gold is reported to have been 287,811 ounces, and the total silver to 124,700 ounces. The aggregate amount of ore mined in the camp amounted to 651,000 tons, of which approximately 370,750 tons were milled and the remainder, except for a small quantity of crude ore shipped direct to the smelter, was sorted out as waste. The overall grade for the camp was approximately 0.44 ounce of gold a ton mined or, based on a yield of 280,632 ounces from the ore milled, an average of 0.75 ounce of gold a ton milled. 5

1.3 A History of Gold Mining in the the Port Eliza Area Exploration on the Port Eliza property started in 1938, at the peak of the Zeballos gold mining boom, following the discovery of a gold rich quartz-calcite vein 3km along the western side of the Port Eliza inlet. The property has since been the subject of several exploration projects that have focussed on the original discovery vein as well as parallel drainages, this work is summarised below in table 1. Starr s 1938 report which described a wide shear striking N40 to 45W and dipping 59 to 65 northeast. It is accompanied by a highly altered fine grained greenish dyke which is sparsely impregnated with fine pyrite and a few small quartz seams (Starr, 1938). The gold bearing vein itself was describe as being two narrow quartz veins from 2 to 12 inches wide separated by 3 to five feet of very low grade highly altered dyke rock. Samples collected by Starr in 1938 were notably lower grade than those collected previous reports by Watson and Rostad (Starr,1938) however he did note high grade ore in hanging wall stringer veins over a width of 3.5 inches with one gold value of Ozs/ton. During 1939 Lewis and Fowler employed 5-9 men to drive two adits into the most promising surface exposures of the gold veins. As a result of this work in 1940, 14 tons of ore that contained 14 ozs of gold and 3 ozs of silver were shipped to the Tacoma smelter, under the name of Port Eliza Gold Mine. After a hiatus in work from 1940 Government Geologist J.S. Stevenson mapped and sampled the two adits in Stevenson recorded evidence of historical surface stripping of the vein at points for over 200 feet. 6

1 meter Figure (3) Current photograph taken from the end of the lower adit towards the entrance. At the time the underground workings were described as two adits one about 60 feet above the other and with the portals about 470 feet apart. The lower adit was estimated as being 430 feet long and the upper adit being 112 feet long with a 12 foot long cross-cut in the lower adit and 25 feet long cross cut in the upper adit In 1983 Scott resampled several key points in the lower adit, collecting 22 rock samples in order to test the reported findings of Stevenson from the 1940 s. Subsequent work by Northcote and Scott found an extension of the vein a further 20 meters towards the south-east (The Scott Zone ) Work by Northcote in 1986 confirmed the findings of Stevenson (1945) and Scott (1983) that the first 25 meters of the upper adit contained the highest gold grades and widest structures and that the lower adit was too lowgrade for economic development. The most notable results were that the upper zone structure, traceable on surface for about 75 metres has the strongest quartz vein development of all three zones to oz Au/ton over widths from 0.1 to 0.5 metres. 7

A compilation of historical data is available in appendix (A), The statistics of all gold data collected from Stevenson in 1945 to Northcote in 1987 are summarised in the table below. GOLD Lower Zone Upper Zone Dump Mean (ppm) Median (ppm) Standard Deviation Minimum (ppm) Maximum (ppm) Number of Samples Table (2) Summary statistics of the historical data reported in Northcote, The Geology of the Area The Zeballos Deposit Camp The Zeballos camp area is underlain by an monoclinal sequence of Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks cut by Jurassic and Tertiary intrusions. The Lower Jurassic Bonanza Group is a typical volcanic island arc sequence of largely basaltic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks. This unit is underlain conformably by limestones of the Quatsino Formation and tholeiitic basalts of the Upper Triassic Karmutsen Group. All these units are cut by Jurassic plutons of the Island intrusions, mainly dioritic and granodioritic in composition. The Zeballos stock, with its rocks are cut, spatially related gold-quartz veins, is a quartz dioritic phase of the Catface intrusions of Eocene age (Sinclair and Hansen, 1982). According to Stevenson 1946, the gold-quartz veins of the Zeballos camp consist of quartz-sulphide filling in fracture systems rarely greater than one foot in width although some sheeted zones are up to four feet wide. They have fairly uniform attitudes for considerable distances. Veins in northeasterly trending tension fractures seem to be the most prospective for gold mineralisation. Sulphides and gold occur in layered veins of quartz carbonate and sulphide. The sulphides consist of pyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena pyrrhotite and marcasite. The highest grades are found to be associated with sphalerite and galena. Wallrock alteration occurs in all rock types but is most intense in granodiorite or quartz diorite associated with sericite, chlorite, pyrite and carbonate. 8

The Port Eliza gold mineralisation is hosted within a north-west trending fault and vein system that are hosted within a series of andesitic dykes and granodiorite of the Vancouver-Island plutonic suite. These granodioritic plutons and smaller andesitic dykes cross cut a large suite of basaltic volcanic rocks that underlay most of the inlet. The Basalt The basaltic rock that underlies much of the mapping area on the western side of the port Eliza Inlet is presumably of Lower Jurrassic Bonanza formation (Sinclair and Hansen, 1982). The basalt is very-fine to fine grained, dark grey 9

to black coloured and is composed of a >90% mafic minerals. In places the basalt in porphyrytic, containing 10 % 1-2 mm plagioclase phenocrysts. In the south and northern parts of the inlet the basalt is affected by a characteristic calcic alteration that is associated with replacement of the basalt by up to 30% sulphides as pyrite (Figure 5 D), pyrrhotite and rare chalcopyrite (Figure 5C); wide spread epidotisation (Figure 5 B); sparry calcite, quartz and rare garnet (Figure 5 A); as well as fine grained amphibole. The epidotisation that characterises this style of alteration increases towards the northern most parts of the inlet, it does not crop out on the property. Pyrite forms up to 10% volume as clots and disseminations throughout the basaltic rock. A B 5 mm 5 mm C 10 cm 10 cm D Figure (5). 11 The Granodiorite The granodioritic plutons of the Island plutonic suite cross cut the Bonanza formation basaltic rock (described above) in the central part of the Eliza property. This unit is a light-grey, medium-grained, leucocratic granitoid that contains variable amounts of k-feldspar, plagioclase, amphiboles and quartz. Small round 30 cm enclaves formed of up to 60% pyroxene and amphibole make up to 10% of the rock in some road outcrops. The Andesitic dykes The andesitic rock of medium to fine grained, green coloured and composed of quartz, plagioclase, fine grained mafic minerals. In places they have a porphyritic texture with up to 10% 1mm anhedral, plagioclase phenocyrsts. The andesitic dykes are approximately 10 to 20 meters wide and cross cut granodioritic plutons. In the historical workings the andesitic dykes that host gold bearing structures and are chloritised and sericitised Structure The entire inlet area has been faulted by a series of steeply dipping thrust faults. These have variable strikes and dip directions but trend in approximately a north-western direction. Sampling of these structures revealed little gold. 40 cm Figure (6) Photograph of the fault zone at the on the road approximately on strike with mineralisation found in the lower adit 11

The Gold Rich Mineralisation in the Historical Workings The gold rich mineralisation is found within a system of quartz-carbonate, vein-breccia-shear gouge system ranging from a series of centimeters to more than a meter in width and has been traced for a total of 240 metres of strike length (Northcote, 1986) Quartz A B 15 cm Coarse Crystalline Calcite 20 cm C D 5 cm 5 cm Figure (7) Gold rich mineralisation. 20 Of the 3 stream sediment samples 2 contained very high concentrations of gold: sample E-15-15, collected 40 meters upstream from the adit,. 3. Conclusion The Port Eliza Property has been the subject of extensive mineral exploration from 1934 to Peak of the mineral exploration on the Port Eliza property in the late 1930 s coincided with a peak of mineral exploitation of the Zeballos gold camp where over 30 mines had been opened during the gold rush. In the early nineteen fourties two adits were driven into the most prospective expression of the gold bearing veins, 14 tonnes of high grade material from these adits was sent to a smelter in Tacoma producing 14 ozs of gold and 3 ozs of silver. A hiatus in exploration to 1986 has been blamed on a shortage of labour during World War II. Sampling by the author has confirmed the findings of historical exploration (Stevenson, 1945 and Northcote, 1988) that high grade gold is associated with a north-west trending vein-fault system. High gold values were found both in the fault breccia, fault gouge as well as the unfaulted quartz-carbonate veins. The fault clearly postdates the emplacement of the carbonate-quartz vein but may have remobilised gold from the older hydrothermal system. Sampling of parallel structures along north and south returned no anomalous gold values. In the lower adit the vein has been brecciated and is smeared into fault gouge however in the upper adit the fault zone is separate and is at a different orientation of the from the gold bearing quartz-carbonate vein. Chip sampling revealed high grades of gold in the greenish altered andesitic dyke hanging wall where quartz stringers form up to 10 %. The zone in this was approximately 1.5 meters wide. The chip samples confirmed an extension of the vein from the historical collapsed portal to the upper adit to the by over 25 meters. From the Table (2) it can be seen that the mean gold concentration of all samples collected from the Upper Zone are considerably higher than those collected from the Lower (and Scott) Zones. Few samples were collected from the dump material: Northcote (1987) found very little gold and Scott (1985) found up to 6.1 ppm. The higher grade samples (>1 ppm) are not considered typical dump grades by the author. 20

Figure (14) Photographs comparing the comb textures of the Zeballos miners left A) Comb texture in quartz vein, about 6 inches wide 900 level central Zeballos Mine to the comb textures found at the upper adit (B). The higher grade samples (>1 ppm) are not considered typical dump grades by the author 21

4. Recommendations 1. Trenching and channel sampling program is recommended to discover the north-western and southeastern extents of the gold bearing structure. In places where this is not possible a soil sampling grid at 10 meter spacings should concentrate on the area along strike, north west of the upper adit. 2. Further work needs to be completed to discover the source of anomalous gold in the stream sediment samples to the north of the property. A mapping and stream sediment sampling program should target the rock upstream from the sample E Float of basalt that has undergone calcic alteration was found along the full length of the logging road. The degree of alteration increased sharply to the north of the inlet. Although these samples contained very little anomalous metal or pathfinder elements one sample contained 1% copper.
