3 Project Goals Assess compliance of current NH snow cover products over land, sea ice and the Greenland ice sheet with NRC Climate Data Record (Earth System Data Record (ESDR)) characterisrcs Develop ESDRs of NH snow condirons for individual and integrated products Make the ESDRs available to the user community via the project website, deliver ESDRs to naronal data centers, and encourage their use.

7 Greenland Surface and Near-Surface Melt Thomas Mote, University of Georgia MEaSUREs Project Development of NH Snow & Ice Climate Data Records (PI: David Robinson, Rutgers University) Satellite-derived maps of Greenland surface and near-surface melt from SSM/I and SMMR passive microwave data using a dynamic threshold algorithm. Daily melt maps created on 25km polar stereographic and EASE2 grids. Above: Average melt extent in summer 2011 (green), 2010 (blue), 2007 (red), and the average (black) and standard deviation (shaded) for Left: Departure from average of melt duration (days) during Maximum departures exceeded 50 days in southwest Greenland. Relevance to NASA goals Contributes to our understanding of ice sheet mass balance and Greenland s contribution to global sea level change. Used to validate and improve ice sheet and surface mass balance models. Further information contact: tmote@uga.edu website: snowcover.org Impacts on MeASUREs Snow Project Used in conjunction with the Greenland Ice Surface Temperature (IST), we can delineate surface and nearsurface melt on the Greenland Ice Sheet. Science Application Our surface and near-surface melt product should lead to a better understanding of the variation in melt water available for runoff and ice sheet lubrication, as well as Greenland ice sheet response to regional climate change. Hall, Cryospheric Sciences Branch, NASA/GSFC MEaSUREs Project The EOS Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow and ice project has developed maps of Greenland icesurface temperature (IST) Also supports a NASA s MEaSUREs Project (David Robinson, PI) and a NOAA s CDR Project (J. Key, PI) MODIS IST maps of Greenland are daily and monthly, 6.25-km resolution Sample meanmonthly icesurface temperature color-coded maps for July (left) and December (right) 2010 Relevance to NASA goals IST is a key component of the mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet, and is used to delineate surface-melt extent Increases our understanding of the complex relationship between surface melt and mass loss which leads to sea-level rise Further information contact: dorothy.k.hall@nasa.gov website: Impacts of IST maps on MeASUREs Snow Project Used in conjunction with passive-microwave melt maps, we can delineate both surface and near-surface melt on the Greenland Ice Sheet. 9 Sea Ice Age Depicts Fundamental Changes in Ice Cover Extreme loss of the oldest and thickest ice types since the 1990s Who/What/Where/When/Why MEaSUREs Project: Development of NH Snow & Ice Climate Data Records (Lead PI: D. Robinson, Rutgers Univ.; U. of Colorado PI: C. Fowler). Project and Data: Merging of satellite (AVHRR, SMMR, SSM/I, AMSR-E) and International Arctic Buoy Program buoy data to calculate the number of years that sea ice survives in the Arctic. Generated a 33-year data record of ice age current through Sept Provides a unique view of changes in key sea ice parameters related to age (thickness, type, salinity, etc.) Relevance to NASA Contributes to basic understanding of the Arctic climate system. Used to help evaluate and improve sea ice and climate models. Relevant for ice forecasting, shipping, coastal ice hazards, wildlife habitat.
