Overview of Geologic Conditions Fill Post-glacial and glacial sands and silty sands Clayey silt to silty clay tills Georgian Bay Shale Variable - ranges from granular to cohesive; 0.8 to 5 m thick Includes alluvial, deltaic / fluvial and lacustrine deposits; loose to dense SP, SM & ML; 0.5 to 7 m thick Stiff to hard CL-ML to CL material; abundant shale fragments and possibly cobbles or boulders; 0.5 to 3.5 m thick Shale with thin interbeds of limestone and siltstone
Contract 1 Geotech Groundwater Depth Range 2 to 3m Prominent transition zone between overburden and shale called the glacial till/shale complex extensive weathering Typically less than 10% interbedded limestone in shale matrix Shale UCS Range 13 MPa RQD Range 70% to 100%, Avg. 90% (in tunnel zone) Time Dependent Deformation Swelling and Stress Relief expected.currently being analyzed
Contract 2 Geotech Groundwater Depth Range 2 to 8m Prominently sand to silty clay Minimal to no shale excavation
Contract 3 Geotech Tomken Road Northern 2.5km: Shallow (<3m) overburden above Shale Bedrock consisting of: Pavement Fill, mixed composition; 0.2m to 2m thick Native Soil: Glacial till (silty clay, clayey silt) very stiff to hard. Southern 1.5km: Overburden cover 12m to >40m above bedrock consisting of: Pavement or Topsoil Fill, Mixed composition, 0.7m to 2m thick Native Soils: Silty Clay Till 1 m to 5 m thick, very stiff to hard Cohesionless Sandy Silt Till, very dense, bouldery Interbedded sand, sand and gravel layers (2),dense
Contract 3 Geotech Tomken Road (continued) Groundwater table generally at ground surface, occasionally 2m to 3m below ground surface Bedrock Georgian Bay Formation Shale with interbedded siltstone and limestone layers. Lithology: (Approximate) 60 % clay minerals; 30% quartz; 10% calcite. Percent of siltstone and limestone layers (per 1.5m core run): Range: 0 to 80 %; Average 14 % Thickness of siltstone and limestone layers: 25 mm to 600 mm
Contract 3 Geotech Bedrock (continued) Rock Quality Designation (RQD) Range;18-100% (Very Poor to excellent); Average 91 % (excellent) Rock Mass Rating (RMR): Range 47 to 79 (Fair to Good) Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) From Laboratory UCS tests: Shale MPa, Average 20.9 MPa Inferred from Point Load Index tests: MPa; Avg MPa Limestone: from Point Load Tests; MPa, Avg. 147 MPa
Contract 3 Geotech Bedrock (continued) Other rock properties: - Low durability - High In-situ horizontal stresses MPa causing overbreak - Time Dependent Deformation causing Rock squeeze - Gas, the rock formation contains combustible gas - Generally low hydraulic conductivity (permeability) - Contains Shear zones causing local instability and heavy ground water infiltration
Contract 3 Geotech Eastgate Parkway Sequence of overburden soils: Fill 1 to 3 m Silty Clay Till, 1 to 10 m thick Cohesionless Sandy Silt Till, very dense, Thickness explored only at three (3) locations where 25 to 30 m Bedrock Georgian Bay Formation Depth to bedrock known only at two locations where 32 to 35 m below ground surface Ground Water Table at shallow depths.
