4 CSM Components Coincidence of channel construction, lack of maintenance and historical discharges have created an unusually large inventory of contaminated sediments in the ower Passaic River. Sediment inventories coincide with areas of deposition, not proximity to source. Passaic River delivers significant load of contaminated sediments to Newark ay. Suspended sediments from Newark ay carry relatively little contamination back up into the Passaic. Dioxin signature uniquely identifies the ower Passaic River impacts on New York/New Jersey Harbor sediments 4 The ouis erger roup, Inc.

15 5 Conceptual Site Model of the ower Passaic River Dynamic Sediment ed is documented by statistical analysis of multiple bathymetric surveys Hydrodynamic reworking of the surface sediments maintains surface contamination, especially in RM 2 to 2, 25 year half life is observed for nearly all contaminants post 980. Mass balance shows resuspension to be the dominant source of contamination to recently deposited sediments preventing substantive recovery Control of sediment and resuspension is critical to the recovery of the river The ouis erger roup, Inc.
