94 Geohemistry Data Report - s and Gas Analyses Well Experimental Proedures All proedures follow NIGOGA, 4 th Edition. Below are brief desriptions of proedures/analytial onditions. Deasphaltening Pentane is added in aess (40 times the volume of oil). The solution is stored for at least 2 hours in a dark plae before the solution is filtered or entrifuged and the weight of the asphaltenes measured. Iatrosan An Iatrosan MK-5 (TLC/FID Analyser) instrument is used. 2 ju. of extrat or diluted oil is spotted on Chromarod S-III rods before elution in hexane (25 min), toluene (8 min) and dihloromethane with 7 % methanol (vol/vol). The solvent is allowed to evaporate before the rods are plaed into the next eluation hamber. Before running the rods in the analyser, the rods are heated for 90 se. in a heating hamber at 60 C. Density An Anton Parr instrument is used. Air and distilled water is used to alibrate the instrument. All measurements are done at 5 C. NSO- is used as a referene sample, and is run in eah series of density measurements. If the visosity of the oil is very high at 5 C, a gravimetri method is used. API gravity is alulated from the density. API Gravity ( ) = 4.5/Density (g/m 3 ) Topping A rotavapor is used and ~ lml of oil is weighted aurately into a small round bottum flask. The oil is evaporated for 5 min at 90 C with the water pump turned to maximum. After the evaporation the oil is weighted again. One aliquot of NSO- is run as a referene sample together with the topping series. GC analysis of gas omponents Aliquots of the samples were transferred to exetainers. 0.-lml were sampled using a Gerstel MPS2 autosampler and injeted into a Hewlett Pakard 5890 Series II GC equipped with Porabond Q olumn, a flame ionisation detetor (FID), a thermal ondutivity detetor (TCD) and a methylization unit. Hydroarbons were measured by FID, CO2 by metylization (to CH4) and then FID and N 2 and O 2 by TCD. Carbon isotope analysis of hydroarbon ompounds and CO2 The arbon isotopi omposition of the hydroarbon gas omponents was determined by a GC-C-IRMS system. Aliquots were sampled with a syringe and analysed on a Trae GC2000, equipped with a Poraplot Q olumn, onneted to a Delta plus XP IRMS. The omponents were burnt to CO2 and water in a 000 C furnae over Cu/Ni/Pt. The water was removed by Nafion membrane separation. Repeated analyses of standards indiate that the reproduibility of 8 3 C values is better than %o PDB (2 sigma). Carbon isotope analysis of low onentration methane using the Preon. The arbon isotopi omposition of methane was determined by a Preon-IRMS system. Aliquots were sampled with a GCPal autosampler. CO2, CO and water were removed on Page 00
95 Geohemistry Data Report - s and Gas Analyses Well hemial traps. Other hydroarbons than CH4 and remaining traes of CO2 were removed by ryotrapping. The methane was burnt to CO2 and water in a 000 C furnae over Cu/Ni/Pt. The water was removed by Nafion membrane separation. The sample preparation system desribed (Preon) was onneted to a Delta plus XP IRMS for 8 3 C analysis. Repeated analyses of standards indiate that the reproduibility of 8 3 C values is better than %o PDB (2 sigma). Hydrogen isotope analysis of methane The hydrogen isotopi omposition of methane was determined by a GC-C-IRMS system. Aliquots were sampled with a GCPal and analysed on a Trae GC2000, equipped with a Poraplot Q olumn, onneted to a Delta plus XP IRMS. The omponents were deomposed to H2 and oke in a 400 C furnae. The international standard NGS-2 and an in-house standard (Std A) were used for testing auray and preision. The "true" value of NGS-2 is given to %o V-SMOW ( Repeated analyses of standards indiate that the reproduibility of 8D values is better than 0 %o PDB (2 sigma). Stable arbon and hydrogen isotope analysis of frations The samples were dissolved in a known amount of dihloromethane, and 4-5 mg of the sample (or as muh as possible) was transferred to a glass ontainer. The solvent was evaporated in an oven at 50 C. CuO and some silver wires were added to the ontainers, whih were then sealed by melting in a vauum. The samples were then ombusted in an oven at 550 C for hour (Sofer, 980). The ombustion produts CO2 and H2O were separated at -80 C. Carbon isotopi omposition of the CO2 aliquot was determined on a Finnigan MAT 25 mass spetrometer. A standard (NGS NSO-, topped oil) is analysed for eah 0 th sample. The 8 3 C value obtained for this standard is %o PDB. The variation in the isotopi values for the standard by repeated analysis over a period of five years is ± 0.3 %o. H2O( g ) aliquot was redued with Zn( s ) to Efyg) and ZnO( s ) in sealed, evauated quartz vessels at 900 C. The 8D omposition was determined by a Finnigan MAT 25 mass spetrometer. Average analysed value for GISP from IAEA is 8DVSMOW = ± 0.89 %o (one standard deviation). Given value from IAEA is ± 0.9 %o. Stable arbon isotope analysis of kerogens The samples were weighed and transferred to a 9x5 mm tin apsule. Approximately 3 mg of the samples were used. The ombustion of the samples in the presene of O2 and &2O3 at 700 C was done in a Carlo Erba NCS 2500 element analyser. Redution of NO X to N2 was done in a Cu oven at 650 C. H2O was removed in a hemial trap of KMnC>4 before separation of N2, CO2 and SO2 on a 2 m Poraplot Q GC olumn. CO2 is flushed on-line in a He flow to a Miromass Optima, Isotope Ratio Mass Spetrometer for determination of 8 3 C. A standard (USGS-24) is analysed for eah 0 th sample. The S 3 C value obtained for this standard is -6.0 ± 0.06 %o PDB (one standard deviation). Given value from IAEA is ± 0. %o PDB (one standard deviation). GC of whole oil A HP5890 II instrument is used. The olumn is a HP PONA, length 50 m, i.d. 0.2 mm, film thikness 0.5 jam. 2,2,4-tri-methyl-pentane is used as an internal standard.
