2 Helpful Definitions: for Ribbon Judging of an Orchid Show DEFINITIONS The following definitions are unofficial and are provided to give assistance in determining appropriate classification of entries. Exhibitor is responsible to be sure plants are correctly classified. Genus: A natural grouping of closely-related species. Dendrobium is an example of a genus. The name of a genus is capitalized. Species: A kind of plant that is distinct from other plants. It is not the product of a cross. Species names are not capitalized and are printed in lower case italics. Example Cattleya mossiae Hybrid: The offspring of a cross between two different species or hybrids. Hybrid names are capitalized. Primary Hybrid: Cross between two species of the same genus (Interspecific) or a cross of two species from different genera. Examples: B. Little Stars = B. nodosa x subulifolia or Aeridovanda Blue Spur = Aerides lawrenceae x V. coerulea Intergeneric hybrid: A hybrid between members of two different genera - Example: Mtssa. Royal Robe = Mtssa. Erachne x Milt. Seminole Blood (Miltonia x Brassia) Complex Intergeneric Hybrid - ara indicates 3+ genera in background Example: Howeara Lava Burst = Hwra. Mini-Primi x Rodrigueza lanceolata 000 CAIOS Classifications 2019 Use this Classification List for Ribbon Judging of CAIOS Show DISPLAYS H = HOBBYIST or ORCHID SOCIETY; P = PROFESSIONAL / COMMERCIAL 001H Open Competition 2 x 2 T/F H Display of orchid plants in flower, arranged for effect on a 2x2 table-top or on Floor HOBBYIST 002H Open Competition 4 x 4 T/F H Display of orchid plants in flower, arranged for effect on a 4 x 4 table-top or on Floor HOBBYIST 002P Open Competition 4 x 4 T/F P Display of orchid plants in flower, arranged for effect on a 4 x 4 table-top or on Floor PROFESSIONAL 003H Open Competition 25 sf T/F H Display of orchid plants in flower, arranged for effect in a 25 sq. ft table-top or floor space HOBBYIST 003P Open Competition 25 sf T/F P Display of orchid plants in flower, arranged for effect in 25 sq. ft table-top or floor space PROFESSIONAL 004H Open Competition (50 sq ft) H Display of orchid plants in flower, arranged for effect 50 sq. ft table-top or floor display HOBBYIST 004P Open Competition (50 sq ft) P Display of orchids in flower, arranged for effect 50 sq. ft table-top or floor display PROF L 005/006 P Open Competition (75 sq ft+) P Orchids in flower in 75 sq ft display 007 Open Competition Educational Educational Exhibit, Any Size 008 Open Competition Artwork Artwork, All Media, Any Size display 009H Open Comp (Cut Flowers, etc) H Cut Flowers, Arrangements -ANY size (Hobbyist) 010P Open Comp (Cut Flowers, etc) P Cut Flowers, Arrangements -ANY size (Pro) 011 Orchid Society Displays Display by an Orchid Society, ANY size 012 Amateur/Novice Competition Display by exhibitor w/o prior award for a display 013 PURPOSELY LEFT BLANK
