2 FREDCLARKEARA AFTER DARK ELKE AM/SAOC S. A. O. C O R C H I D O F T H E Y E A R & S. A. O. C H Y B R I D O F THE YEAR 2014 The South African Orchid Council (SAOC) presents five prizes each year. They are; Orchid of the Year Hybrid of the Year Species of the Year Specimen Orchid of the Year Photographer of the Year The first 3 prizes are awarded to plants and the latter 2 prizes are awarded to people. The winners are selected at the annual Judges Forum, from photographs that have been submitted by all the Regional Judging Centres and ratified at that Judging Forum. The Orchid of the Year is selected from the Hybrid, Species and Specimen of the Year prize-winners. The Genus Fredclarkeara is a man-made genus and was first registered in 2002 by Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids. It comprises three genera: Catasetum, Clowesia and Mormodes and is a very successful genus within the Catasetinae. The winner of the prizes for the SAOC Orchid of the Year and SAOC Hybrid of the Year for 2014 is Fredclarkeara After Dark Elke AM/SAOC and the owner is Chris Steckner, a member of the Witwatersrand Orchid Society Fredclarkeara After Dark Elke AM/SAOC is a hybrid between Catasetum (Ctsm) Grace Dunn x Mormodia (Mo) Painted Desert, and was the first to be registered in the new genus, Fredclarkeara (Fdk) in 2002.This hybrid produces some very dark flowers, as in Chris plant, and also lighter, spotted clones. It has received 41 quality awards from the American Orchid Society (AOS) including 7 FCCs (First Class Certificate), the highest quality award possible. It is one of the most successful hybrids ever made within the Catasetinae.

4 The Plant Table OCTOBER 2014 By Allan Abel PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORMS WITH AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE - Thanks. This month, the plant table consisted of 24 plants tabled by 7 members. The small number of plants was an indication that the Spring Show was just 3 days away. The African/Mascarene section comprised 4 plants. Erhard Schmid showed an Aerangis ellisii, Chris Steckner brought his Angraecum florulentum and Yogan Chetty tabled a Polystachya pubescens. Karsten Wodrich owned the only terrestrial, Eulophia streptopetala. The Pleurothallidinae had 5 species. Erhard had a Masdevallia Marguerite (infracta x veitchiana) and a Masdevallia rex (sic) from a mislabelled flask. Chris brought a Masdevallia Marguerite St Maccus (infracta x veitchiana) and a Dracula lotax. Nolan also showed a plant, Masd. Angel Heart Toetie AM/ SAOC (infracta x ignea) The Slipper Orchids were represented by 4 orchids. Marinus and Mandy Kort brought an unnamed Paph. hybrid and Yogan exhibited a Paph. Hung Sheng Gourd (Hung Sheng Star x Shin-Yi Apple). Nolan Owen-Johnston brought 2 species, a cute Paph. helenae and a Paph. lowii. BEST HYBRID Miltoniopsis Jersey - Owned by Chris Steckner 4
5 There were 3 plants in the Laeliiniae group. Yogan exhibited a large yellow flowered plant of Epidendrum radicans and an Epicyclia Mabel Kanda (E. cordigera x Epi. densiflorum ). Nolan tabled an Epidendrum Pacific Stonefruit (Pacific Contrast x Pacific Sunset) There were 3 Vandaceous orchid on the table this month and all belonged to Yogan. They were two un-named Phalaenopsis hybrids and a miniature blue Vanda hybrid. The Oncidiinae group comprised 4 plants. Yogan tabled his Oncidium Jungle Monarch ( Debutante x maculatum) and Chris brought two Miltoniopsis hybrids, Mps. Nancy Binks ( Gascogne x Cindy Kane) and Mps. Jersey (Hamburg x Hannover). Nikki Meier showed her unnamed Psychopsis. The only Other Hybrid belonged to Mandy & Marinus Kort and it was a Dendrobium Jairak Splash Dragonfly (Kasem Gold x Uthaiwan) BEST AFRICAN / MASCARENE Aerangis ellisii - Owned by Erhard Schmid 5

10 FYI MISSION STATEMENT AND OBJECTIVES OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN ORCHID COUNCIL (S.A.O.C.) The MISSION of the S.A.O.C. is: To promote the culture, hybridisation, and conservation of orchids in South Africa through policy formulation, education, support and dissemination of knowledge on a continuous basis. The OBJECTIVES of the S.A.O.C. are: 1. To promote and support regional orchid societies by:- a. Publishing a journal biannually containing articles of a scientific, horticultural and conservational nature, the S.A.O.C. Awards with available photographs and descriptions, plus general information promoting orchids at national and Society level; b. Developing and maintaining an SAOC website; c. Producing and distributing a monthly newsletter that includes up to date information on orchid events at national and society level; d. Raising funds by all legal means within South Africa to further the Mission and Objectives of the S.A.O.C; and e. Promoting and supporting the hosting at Society level of a national orchid conference and show on a triennial basis. 2. To formulate and oversee orchid judging in South Africa by:- a. Establishing and up-dating Regulations and Guidelines on Judging ; b. Maintaining a register of Accredited S.A.O.C. Judges; c. Establishing a Judging Committee and administering orchid judging in South Africa through four Regional Judging areas; d. Recognising and awarding orchid clones of horticultural merit by Accredited S.A.O.C. Judges at Regional Judging areas; e. Establishing Regional Judging Schools in order to train Learner Judges and keep the Accredited S.A.O.C. Judges up to date with the latest trends in judging, judging standards and hybridisation; and f. Ensuring the attendance at and judging of Society Shows by Accredited S.A.O.C. Judges. 3. To establish a Conservation Task Team to :- a. Actively promote the conservation and improved knowledge about the South African indigenous orchids; and b. Establish a working relationship with Provincial entities responsible for enforcement of conservation legislation. SAOC/2013/2 10 November 2013
