2 2 The Northeast Judging Center is Moving! Effective July, 2018, the Northeast Judging Center of the American Orchid Society, currently based in Stamford CT, is moving to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, 353 East Hanover Ave, Morris Township, NJ just off of Interstate 287. Judging day remains the third Saturday of each month, just at a new location starting this July. Why the move? We re bringing the judging closer to you! Many of our growers live in northern and central New Jersey. The move should facilitate more growers exhibiting their plants and encourage more growers to check out the judging program. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum offers plentiful free parking and drive-up access to the lower level classroom where judging takes places for convenient plant drop-off. Everyone is welcome! Bring an orchid for judging, or just come and listen in. Either way, you ll learn a lot about your orchid. Remember, the May 19 and June 16, 2018 judging days are at the current location, the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford CT. Then, starting with the July 21, 2018 and going forward, the judging is at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Come join us. With orchids timing is everything. If your orchids are in their prime earlier in the month, the Northeast Judging Center in Boylston MA meets on the first Saturday of the month, and the Mid-Atlantic Judging Center meets in Philadelphia PA on the third Wednesday of the month. So, there are lot of opportunities to have your orchids judged and pick up a few tips from the judges. 2

3 June 2018 Volume 17 Issue 10 Delaware Orchid Society June Banquet Speaker Ed Weber 3 Ed Weber is an AOS Accredited judge in the Mid-Atlantic Judging Center in Philadelphia. He's been studying orchids since 1999 and has traveled to Ecuador twice to see orchids in their own environment. One of the great highlights of these trips was sharing the experience of seeing Phrag. besseae growing cliff-side with Walt Off. Since 2003 he has focused primarily on pleurothallids and other miniature tropicals, at one time having over 70 different species of Dracula at one time! When he moved in 2008 his new home was incompatible with growing his pleuros and he switched his focus back to his original love, mini-catts and other small species that are a bit less demanding. In his professional life Ed owns a software company that specializes in software for the insurance industry since In addition to orchids he is an avid rail-fan and has ridden Amtrak cross-country 3 times and is looking forward to the 4th next spring. In "Oddities of the Orchid World" we will look at the reasons why we love these strange and wonderful flowers. We'll examine some interesting physical curiosities and explore some of the most peculiar pollination strategies in the plant kingdom. We finish up with a selection of flowers that look back at us. I hope this talk takes you back to a time when orchids were new, strange and wonderful, and you just couldn't get enough of them! 3
