1 The North Jersey Orchid Society NEWSLETTER MARCH 2014 The Official Publication of the North Jersey Orchid Society Join us at our next meeting Thursday, MARCH 13 th, And meet Tom Harper Tom Harper began growing orchids on a windowsill in In 1975, he had registered his first orchid hybrid and founded Stones River Orchids as a business. As a long-time supporter of the Mid -America Orchid Congress, Tom served as its President, Vice- President and Mid-American Editor (the MAOC newsletter). Tom is also a founding member of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance (IPA) in 1989 and has served in many responsible positions including Vice President, President, and IPA Journal contributor on many occasions. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors as the Immediate Past President of the Alliance and is the Southeast Region 12 Representative. He has been an active member in the Orchid Society of Middle Tennessee since 1967 serving as President, Vice President, and Trustee. Tom assisted in writing and editing the Phalaenopsis species section of the soft cover Ortho book entitled Complete Guide to Orchids, has written several articles on Phalaenopsis for Orchids, Orchid Digest and the IPA Journal. Tom has traveled coast to coast and internationally speaking on various aspects of Phalaenopsis. Tom lectured at the 16th World Orchid Conference in 1996 in Brazil, and the 19th WOC in January 2008 in Miami. He was invited to speak in March 2005 and again in 2007 at the Taiwan International Orchid Show and Symposium in Hsinying, Taiwan, Republic of China. He returned to Taiwan in 2010 and plans to travel there again soon. Most recently, he spoke at the 15th Annual International Phalaenopsis Alliance meeting in the United Kingdom in June In 2008, he received his first FCC/AOS on Dtps. Brother Success, Laura (The highest award given by the American Orchid Society) at the Heart of Dixie Show in Huntsville, Alabama. He has been an accredited American Orchid Society judge since 1984 and is based in the Atlanta Judging Center. You can preorder plants for Tom to bring to the meeting. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE March Auction A Success When I saw the weather forecast for February 13 that predicted a significant snow storm, I did not hesitate to postpone the auction to the following week. However, I wasn t sure if Hanover Manor was able to accommodate us, or whether Patti Lee was able to come, or whether we would have a good turn out. I was delighted that everything turned out alright. Hanover Manor said no problem and Patti Lee could make it. My fears were beginning to subside. We held our meeting/auction in the newly renovated part of Hanover Manor, which was a fancy upgrade that came with its own rest rooms. I was happy to see members from Jersey Highlands Orchid Society, Manhattan Orchid Society, Deep Cut Orchid Society and Greater New York Orchid Society join us. We are grateful for our members and vendors who the donated plants. I appreciate the generosity of Patti Lee and Paul Bundarin for donating custom handmade jewelry. Much of the success of our auction is because of the hard work of Carrie Buchman and Lisa Choplo, who put together the list of plants, researched the cultural information, searched for photos, and made it into a PowerPoint presentation. The great selection and variety of plants (continued on page 2) Page 1 MARCH 2014
2 (continued from page 1) is the work of Marion Israel, who contacted the vendors and negotiated a good price. Thanks to our team and the talented auctioneering of Patti Lee, we made over $1,500. Thanks to all who made purchases at the auction, your support helps us to bring quality programs and events that you have come to enjoy. I urge all our members to attend the auctions of our sister societies. They came to support us, let us return the favor by supporting them. We will include information on their auctions in our newsletter. Richard Page 2 MARCH 2014
3 NJOS at the Philadelphia Flower Show Sick of Winter? There is hope! The Philadelphia Flower Show kicked off on Friday with judging and the members preview. This year s theme is ARTiculture, the combination of art and horticulture, exploring the relationship between natural and fine arts. It celebrates everyone from Michelangelo to Monet, Picasso to Pollock, and da Vinci. Artistic classes might interpret a painting or sculpture, an artist s residence/workspace, or a fabric pattern. There is even an aerial dance performance incorporating sculpture and flowers. Two members of NJOS had orchids in the orchid Horticourt, Ty Triplett and Carrie Buchman, and both received ribbons for their orchids. Ty is the co-chair of the orchid display with Marie-Christine Vaillett of SEPOS, and they staged an eye-catching display though the number of orchid entries was down this year, perhaps due to the cold dark winter. Ty Triplett s Ludisia discolor We will be doing a sale of Orchiata bark and New Zealand Spahagnum Moss over the next two months. We need a minimum of 42 bags to make the sale, so please check your supplies and see if you can use a bag or two (in different sizes). Prices and order form are on page 4 of this newsletter.
