1 The North Jersey Orchid Society NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 The Official Publication of the North Jersey Orchid Society At Our Next Meeting Thursday, MAY 11 th PETER TOBIAS Will tell us about Orchid Conservation Peter Tobias Ph.D. is Director and OCA President. He is the former chair of the San Diego County Orchid Society Conservation Committee; a member of the Orchid Specialist Group, an IUCN Board Member, and member pf the Orchid Digest Foundation. Peter is a retired Associate Professor of Biochemistry, from the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolia, CA. His orchid interests are Conservation, landscaping with orchids, and orchid focused ecotourism. Peter s talk will be on Orchid Conservation. As orchid lovers, members of the OCA work to preserve orchids and orchid habitats. They create protected reserves where wild orchids can continue to live and blossom in the rain and sunshine. A side benefit is that everything else that lives in the reserve is protected too. The Orchid Conservation Alliance, founded in 2006, promotes the conservation of orchids and orchid habitat around the world. Currently they have reserves in Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia, however, they say, they are open to orchid conservation anywhere. Preservation of natural orchid habitat preserves the orchids, their pollinators, their genetic diversity, and other fauna, as well as the birds, frogs, insects, reptiles, and mammals in the forests where they live. From The President s Desk The Lusty Month of May I m sure you are also enjoying the emerging new roots and growths on your orchids that will [hopefully] result in many future blooms. We have an amazing show table each month with an abundance of riches. All those beautiful flowers started with roots and new growths many of which emerge this time of year. I recently mounted a Cattleya on a large piece of cork. The plant was climbing out of its pot so I thought it might enjoy a climbing surface. I always like to experiment with new (for me) ways of growing things. I am giddy each morning as I view the new roots extending out into the cord and the perceptual lengthening of its new growth. Those roots are a beauteous site! I ve also been working on my repotting. When repotting, I always have a few divisions which I will give away or donate to NJOS. I hope you do the same. Orchid people are incredibly generous; and I look forward to sharing my little bits & pieces with my friends. I am usually pretty good about writing the repotting dates on the plant labels. and then the label is lost. So I am starting to also record the date in my orchid database. Maybe someday I ll figure out how to get a Potting Report out so I can determine the supplies I need before I start the job. Redundancy is good, I lost my primary home computer a few weeks ago. Fortunately it gave me sufficient time to copy all my data off it. Of course, my orchid database was being regularly backed up I can live without the rest, but not without my orchids! 2 I HAVE BEEN ADVISED BY THE HANOVER MANOR THAT ON THURSDAY NIGHT WE WILL ONCE AGAIN BE IN THE ROOM ON THE LOWER LEVEL. REMEMBER THERE IS NO ELEVATOR. ALSO, THIS MAY MEAN A BUSY NIGHT FOR THE PARKING LOT COME EARLY Board Member Election The following Board members are up for reelection for the term and each has ask to stay on. As always, other nominations are welcome. If there are no other nominations, this is the slate of officers we will vote on at the June meeting. V.P. - Bill Stender Treasurer Bart Costello Recording Secretary Lisa Choplo Membership Officer Sandra Mackowiak Newsletter Anita Gibaldi Trustee Trudy Bliesath Trustee Nancy Gerhardt Trustee Lowell Jacobs Trustee Russell Polo Silva Orchids June Culture Day & Sale Friday, June 9 & Saturday, June 10, AM to 5 PM Hands on culture provided by Silva Orchids: Learn how to properly pot your orchids. We will discuss your plants and show you why we are handling your orchids in a certain way. You will see why we select a certain potting mix for your plants, if they need to be treated for bugs and possible disease, and why we would divide a plant, or leave it alone entirely. It is a lot of fun, so come and enjoy a great day. 7 Lois Duffin, March 14th, 2017 For the fourth time in less than a year, the local orchid world lost a long time mainstay. We regret having to announce, that Lois Duffin passed away on March 14th. Lois and Jim (who passed away just 4 months ago), were a driving force in the Philadelphia orchid scene, and part of the DCOS show for many years, though poor health kept them away the last 2-3 years. If you see an orchid with clonal name Mt Airy, you are looking at a plant that originated in the Duffin collection. Lois was very fond of both Cymbidiums & Dendrobiums, so we are including a photo from the Duffins 2009 exhibit in the DCOS show, showing a large Den speciosum flanked by Cymbidiums. From Orchid News, DCOS MAY 2017 Thank you, Kim. From Carrie Buchman The Duffins were long time exhibitors at the Philadelphia Flower show, winning many trophies, especially for their Cymbidiums and dendrobiums. A new Philadelphia Flower Show Trophy will be awarded starting in 2018: The Lois and James Duffin Memorial Award for Best Specimen Cymbidium. Page 7 MAY 2017
