Meeting Duty Roster : June B Group July C Group August A Group No SOCM on 7 th July because the following Saturday 13 th July the Wide Bay combined orchid societies annual orchid workshop is on at Howard and the club will subsidize the bus cost so that you can travel to this educational workshop for $10pp. SOCM on 4 th August is an orchid repotting workshop for new and old growers. A special invitation is extended to all new growers to come along and see how it is done by the experts. The club hopes that all growers will take advantage of this meeting to stock up on your potting requirements for the repotting season. 3 Wide Bay Combined Orchid Societies Annual Orchid Workshop at Howard The workshop will be held at Howard on 13 th July hosted by the Maryborough & District Orchid Society. You must supply your own lunch and bring a plate to be shared for morning and afternoon tea. The bus cost will be $10 per person. We invite your society to attend our conference and show to share the special orchids and plants of the Australasian region. The show will be open to the public over three days starting Friday the 23rd August from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Saturday 24th from 9.00am till 5.00pm and Sunday 25th from 9.00am to 3.00pm. Admission will be $5.00 for adults with children accompanied by a paying adult, free. If there is enough support the club will take a bus to this show. It is well worth seeing.

These days it is quick and easy to check if crosses have been named using the computer program Orchidwiz. The club and quite a few members have the program and they will look up the information for you. Labels are very important, old brittle ones need to be replaced before they break up or can t be read. Here is an orchid name submitted at the May meeting. The member had copied what was written on the label. The correct name is Blc. Goldenzelle. The Cattleya Alliance Members of the Cattleya Alliance are usually epiphytic, but some are lithophytic (growing on rocks). They possess thickened pseudobulbs with one or two leaves at apex. Their leaves are leathery in texture, thick and tough (coriaceous) or fleshy. They are sympodial in growth, with each new growth arising from the previous growth. In their natural habitat, members of the Cattleya Alliance grow on and along supporting surfaces, such as limbs and trunks of trees, in the tropical and subtropical Americas. Included in the Cattleya Alliance are species and hybrids of the following popular genera: Brassavola, Broughtonia, Diacrium, Encyclia, Epidendrum, Laelia, Rhyncholaelia, Schomburgkia, Sophronitis, and Tetramicra. The cattleya group is known for large, showy and sometimes fragrant flowers. Some of the most stunning orchids in cultivation are cattleyas, with huge flowers that can measure 20cm across and come in a wide variety of colours and patterns. Because of their ease of growth and sheer beauty, cattleyas are the most hybridized of all orchids, and there are thousands of registered hybrids. Most cattleya produce one new flush of growth annually, and each new pseudobulb should produce flowers that same growing season, often in late summer or winter. Some of the hybrids might produce two or more bloomings annually. The cattleya on the left has an exhibition or filled in shape while the one the right has an open or starry shape. Both types may occur as a single flower, several flowers or as a cluster of 5 or more flowers Dendrobiums Dendrobium is a huge genus of orchids. Dendrobium species are either epiphytic, or occasionally lithophytic. They have adapted to a wide variety of habitats, from the high altitudes in the Himalayan mountains to lowland tropical forests and even to the dry climate of the Australian desert.

Softcane Dendrobiums or nobile (no-bil-ay) type have Flowers in groups of 1 to 5 at nodes along the length of the cane Callista Softcane Flowers of Callista or chandelier section are borne on pendulous inflorescences resembling a chandelier. Flowers from the Australian Dendrobium section are borne on a peduncle or primary flower stalk which supports several to many Australian flowers. Paphiopedilums Paphiopedilums are easily identified from their common name Slipper Orchid as the pouch on the flower resembles the toe of a ladies slipper. Basically, Paphiopedilums may be divided into plants with single flowered stems or those producing multifloral inflorecences. Of the single flowered type, the Complex Exhibition, Non Exhibition type and the species from which they are derived, sport plain green leaves with only slight veinations (often in red flowers). Complex Maudiae Type are the ones with prominent mottled foliage sometimes worth growing for their leaves alone. Species The Multifloral group can be roughly divided into 2 groups, one which produces their flowers more or less simultaneously and those which produce them sequentially, sometimes over a period exceeding a year. Maudiae The third group of single-flowered Paphs are those belonging to the Brachypetalum group mostly from Malaya to Thailand
