How to Grow Great Slipper Orchids, by Glen Decker of Piping Rock Orchids (pipingrockorchids.com) (Transcribed by Inge Poot) Glen started out growing orchids as a hobby about 37 years ago. The rest is a common refrain of other commercial growers. When the collection had grown to about 5000 plants, he thought that he had better start selling some to support the ever more expensive hobby! Etc, etc... He now has 10,000 to 15,000 orchids and has decided to specialize in slipper orchids. He admits to being more partial to Phragmipediums than Paphiopedilums, but when you have thousands of each... Basic Cultural Points for most Phrags and Paphs: Temperature : intermediate, 58-85F Light: Moderate to bright, fc Water: moist (all paphs), wet (most phrags) Fertilizer: moderate to heavy Repotting: every year to every three years Paphiopededilum The genus will be grouped by culture into seven parts: 1. Parvisepalum Group (and Hybrids with them) It contains such species as Paph delenatii (easiest to grow, probably because it has been line-bred so heavily that what is now in cultivation is selected for indoor growing.) The clone shown in the programme had lovely full flat white sepals and petals and a deep pink pouch. Ever since the species has been rediscovered in the wild, better coloured clones have been finding their way into cultivation. The clone shown must have had some of the new clones in its background. The yellow Paph. armeniacum and the pink with darker veins Paph. macranthum are the hardest to grow from this group. Paph macranthum has a huge pouch that looks just like a pink toilet bowl! Paph. malipoense has green, purple veined flowers and a deep purple spot on the distal half of the white staminode. It has a strong fragrance of raspberries and in common with most fragrant flowers, the flowers are less long lasting than those of the non-fragrant species. Other species in this group are Paph. vietnamense one of the more recently discovered species. It has only recently become legal to own it if purchased from a legally imported source. This species has wide down-turned pink petals and a deep pink pouch. The staminode is white with a yellow blotch in whose center is a green chevron or the letter V. A great source of large size and good shape is found in the species Paph. hangianum. It has straw-coloured flowers with wide rounded petals whose proximal halves are marked with a diffuse mahogany blotch. In the best clones the petals are held horizontally and the spherical pouch is nicely framed by the ventral sepal. It is similar to Paph. emersonii, but bigger. We get the white hybrid Paph. Joyce Hasegawa when the white delenatii is crossed with the white emersonii. The pink pouch of the delenatii wins out over the yellow pouch of emersonii. We get a less flat looking flower of palest pink with a pink pouch in the hybrid Lynleigh Koopowitz when we cross the white with pink pouch delenatii with the all green malipoense. There may be bits of pale pink veining in the petals of the hybrid, the only sign there that the malipoense is in the background. However, most clones are fragrant like the malipoense and have the purple blotch on the staminode. To get a good pink hybrid we have the famous Magic Lantern a cross of delenatii and macranthum. The resulting flowers are full, round, pink with darker veining. The staminode usually has two dark red eyes (from the delenatii) joined by a yellow blotch(from the macranthum). Lovely! Even an ordinary clone is nice! It may even carry two flowers per inflorescence. A really stately cross results from crossing malipoense with Paph. rothschildianum. The clone shown had two flowers and one bud on the inflorescence. The upright wide dorsal was green with criss-crossing brown veins. The cream petals were longer and narrower than malipoense, but this clone had a shiny brown overlay on the proximal third, brown veining on the rest. The light yellow pouch with light brown veining as well as the white staminode with a magenta overlay on the distal half provided lots of colour and contrast. 5

Another lovely cross is Gloria Naugle, micranthum X rothschildianum. The single flowers are very large. The clone shown had shiny mahogany sepals and petals whose centers broke up into brown veining on a green background. The round pouch was deep pink with even deeper pink veining. Culture of Parvisepalum Group : 2. Complex Group: This is the group that contains the big waxy flowered Paphiopedilums that are affectionately nicknamed bulldog paphs or toads. As these nicknames imply, the flowers are big, full, waxy in greens and reds and some clones tended to have short stems. This made the flowers look like toads sitting in the crown of the plant! However, decreasing light levels as the flowers emerge can get rid of that fault in most clones. The flowers last two to four months! Culture of the Complex Group: 3. Maudiae Group: Culture of the mottled leaved Group: This is one of the groups whose species have lovely marbled foliage. The majority of the species are as easy to grow as their hybrids. Some of the species shown were Paph. sukhakulii, acmodontum, purpuratum, sangii(this species turns out to be not as hard to grow as was first thought) and venustum. Most of the species have single flowers on long stems with green, brown and pink colour combinations. The alba forms of some of the species were used to produce elegant and easy to grow green and white hybrids such as the famous green form of Paph. Maudiae. Paph sukhakulii was used to make lovely crosses with spots such as Paph Macabre. And then two very deep purple Paph. callosums ( Ebony Queen and Jack )were found not all that long ago, that were used to produce ever more stunning vini-coloured Paph hybrids. Some of these hybrids were almost black and some had flame coloured dorsals with black veins. They tend to be mealy bug magnets so watch them! 6

4. Plain-leaved single flowering Group: This group contains the hybridizer s must-have Paph. insigne, a chartreuse species with the dorsal spotted brown, the petals over-laid and veined medium brown and the pouch over-laid with a reddish light brown, as well as such brown and pink species as Paph. charlesworthii (whose huge pink dorsal has been flattened and intensified in colour through line breeding) and Paph.hirsutissimum and its variety esquirolei (brown flowers with pink petal tips). Paph. spicerianum is an olive green species with most of the dorsal white and with the sides curled back, while the dorsal and petals have a deep pink mid-vein that shows up in its hybrids for many generations. A fairly recently discovered species is Paph.tigrinum. Its name comes from the irregular brown stripes decorating its chartreuse dorsal sepal and the fat brown midvein running most of the length of the pink petals. The shiny light brown pouch adds a nice contrast, as does the cream staminode. Paph. henryanum is another beauty with a chartreuse wide dorsal boldly spotted black-brown, red-brown shiny petals and a shiny bright pink pouch. Culture of the plain-leaved, single flowered group: This group hates old mix and most must be re-potted once per year. 5. Sequentially flowering group: This group does not mind being re-potted while in bloom. Just as well, since they can be in bloom forever with a new flower coming every six weeks! Examples are Paph. moquettianum (wide chartreuse dorsal stippled light brown, twisted, white petals spotted burgundy, pouch deep pink but with the rim yellow, staminode brown) and the similar Paph. liemianum (the dorsal has a deep olive green centre and the pouch rim is white not yellow and the pink colour of the pouch consists of dense pink stipples). Paph. chamberlainianum is like liemianum in colour but the olive green in the centre of the dorsal is now a blotch near the base and there are heavy deep green veins where the blotch is in the other species. Culture of the sequentially flowering species: 6. Brachypetalum Group: These plants have leathery leaves and they like to dry out between watering, especially in the winter. They grow better in a less humid environment. Examples are the well-known Paph. bellatulum which has slightly cupped, red-spotted, white flowers on weak short stems, but the segments are so wide that the flowers have a lot of visual impact anyway. The big toads have to thank this species for their wide full flowers but also for their often short stems. Another famous species is Paph. godfroyae whose segments are less wide and the spotting is replaced by heavy criss-crossing veination on the sepals and petals. The pouch markings are on the interior and are hardly noticeable, thus contrasting nicely with the other segments. 7

Culture of Brachypetalum Group: 7. Multifloral Group: This group contains the giants of the genus. Some may have a three foot (one meter) leaf-span! They tend to take longer than a year to mature a growth, especially at our latitudes. The easiest species to grow in this group are Paph. haynaldianum and the similar Paph. lowii. Paph.haynaldianum has olive green flowers whose dorsal lightens to white with a pink flush along the edges and has brown veins. The petals become pink on the distal halves, while the proximal halves have brown spots on the olive background. The pouch is shiny light olive. Paph. lowii has similarely shaped flowers, but the dorsal is green with a cetral dark brown blotch, the proximal two thirds of the petals are straw-coloured with big brown spots while the distal third is pink. The pouch is dark shiny brown. Paph. philippinense has lovely flowers with a white dorsal with mahogany longitudinal veins, mahogany long drooping petals and a gold pouch with light brown veins. Paph. gigantifolium has gigantic foliage! The flowers are medium in size, unfortunately! Their dorsal sepals and petals are gold, the dorsals heavily veined deep brown and the curly-tipped petals are spotted deep brown. The white lip has a heavy mahogany overlay on the front. More colour is provided by the green ventral and the yellow staminode. Paph. rothschildianum is the most heavily used species for hybridizing. It has 3-5 stately large flowers per inflorescence with striking almost horizontally held petals. The white sepals and petals are densely veined with mahogany, while the pouch is light brown, heavily overlaid red-mahogany in the best clones and veined in a deeper shade of the same colour. Paph. sanderianum has only recently been brought back into cultivation. It is not easy to grow! It takes years for the original growth to mature enough to flower, then it rests for another three years before it flowers again and only after a few years is the plant strong enough to flower regularly. It produces only two to four flowers per inflorescence, but what flowers they are! The colour scheme is much like that of gigantifolium, but the petals are enormously long and twisted. The Rapunzel of the orchid world! Grow warmer than the other species of this group. Hybrids in this group try to reduce plant size and have faster maturing offspring. Easy to grow are Paph. Julius (lowii X rothschildianum)- cream sepals with brown veins and mahogany pouch and petals and Paph. St Swithin (philippinense X rothschildianum)- looks like a philippinese on steroids! The hybrid, Paph. Prince Edward of York (sanderianum X rothschildianum) has produced some impressive flowers, but most clones take many years to mature. The clone shown had 3 flowers on the inflorescence, each flower with wide, long gracefully down-curved, off-white petals that had a wide light brown central band that was heavily spotted dark brown. The sepals were gold, veined dark brown and the pouch was a shiny medium brown-gold. A bit of red around the column and the light green ovary added colour. 8

Culture of the Multifloral Group: General cultural tips: Keep most moist all the time and water after the pots have almost, but not completely dried out. This will probably mean water once per week in summer and every 10 to 14 days in winter. To be continued next month 9
