Next show February 16 17, SOOS VALENTINE ORCHID SHOW CANCELLED Our SOOS Annual Valentine Orchid Show for 2012 unfortunately has had to be cancelled because of the ongoing City of Toronto parking lot and access reconstruction at the TBG. This reconstruction is not expected to be finished in time for a February show. We decided to cancel the show rather than run the risk of bad experiences for our visitors and vendors. We thank the Toronto Botanical Garden for their assistance in trying to accommodate us. The 2013 Show has been booked for February Meeting Program Sunday, January 8, Toronto Botanical Garden. Sales at noon, program at 1 pm. Jean Allen-Ikeson on Hot Lips. Her talk is an informative but light-hearted journey through the inheritance of lip colour and form from Cattleya species. After this talk you should be able to look at a catt hybrid and make a good guess about some of the species in its ancestry. Jean operates Windsor Greenhouse ( in Dundas, Ontario, where she sells orchids and greenhouses. She is an orchid judge in the Toronto Judging Centre and has a large personal collection of Cattleyas. She is the author of the 2011 American Orchid Society Supplemental Issue on Sarcochilus, a charming miniature to compact Australian genus that is related to Phalaenopsis and Vanda. 2 SOOS President s Remarks Fellow orchid aficionados: I hope that all of you enjoyed the Christmas party. Thanks to all of you who donated items for the auction, as well as to those who bid for these same items. We were able to raise over $ to benefit our society and to help support the judging centre. Thanks to the auctioneers, Mario, Pat and Wayne who kept things moving. And thanks to the kitchen crew who organized the scrumptious feast that we all were able to share. With the January 8 th meeting, we will once again be enjoying the Social Break as part of our monthly meetings. The letters for this first meeting of 2012 will be A and B. We are asking anyone whose last name starts with these letters to bring in a treat to share. These treats should be finger foods only i.e. something that can be picked up with your fingers and does not require a plate or fork. Prior to the festivities, I had the pleasure of introducing your executive for 2012/13. I would like to acknowledge these people here as well. The returning directors are: Don Wyatt, Henry Glowka, Inge Poot, Jay Norris, Marion Curry, Max Wilson, Peter Poot, Liz McAlpine, and Terry Kennedy. Staying on in their current positions are Sue Loftus as secretary, John Vermeer as treasurer and myself as president. The new faces joining the executive as directors are Eric Terreau, Karen Hazelton, Marilyn Crompton and John Spears. You will be seeing Marilyn, Eric, and Karen at the membership table. Laura Liebgott has agreed to stand as vice president. Thanks are extended to Hesse Pommels and Chee Chong for the many years they have spent collecting our membership fees. Although continuing to work on other projects and remaining as S.O.O.S. members, Tom Atkinson will no longer be on the executive. Thank you Tom. Those of you who were at the December 6 th meeting will have heard the sad news. There will not be a Valentine s Orchid show in It was a difficult decision to make. After the discussing the pros and cons, the executive made the choice not to hold our annual show. If was felt that the situation with the parking (there would be little to none), as well as the blockage to the main entrance, would only generate ill will and frustration for anyone trying to attend our show. Rather than turn people off, we have opted to advertise that we will be back in full bloom on February 16 th and 17 th The condition of the parking lot is not in the hands of the TBG. The parking lot is owned and controlled by the city of Toronto. The TBG shares our frustration since the programs that they offer are also impacted. As part of the program on January 29 th, a Town Hall meeting will be held to explore the status and future direction of the Southern Ontario Orchid Society. Jay Norris has agreed to act as moderator. Take this opportunity to offer your opinions and suggestions about our orchid society. Do you have an idea or complaint that you wish to bring forward? What do you like about our society? What are your thoughts about the organization of our meetings, the newsletter? Is there a topic that you would like to have addressed as part of the monthly programme? Best wishes for the holiday season and I ll see you all next year. Yvonne Schreiber Questions or comments yvonneschreiber68@gmail.com or Welcome New Members Zuzana Smidova, Ardenn Tuazon Fall New Comers Meetings Wayne Hingston ( ) will once again present his excellent series on the culture of the most popular types of hobby orchids. These sessions are for members who have just started in orchids and will be presented at the 2
Toronto Botanical Garden Board Room on the following Tuesday evenings at 7 pm: Wind up meeting January17 (2012). Valentine Show News 2013 The cancellation of the 2012 show was sad news indeed, especially so for those of us who had put in a substantial amount of work. The good news is that everyone on the show committee has volunteered to carry on for the 2013 version. The dates have been booked, February 16 and 17, 2013 at the TBG. The current publicity person, Linda Kafka is available for consultation, but has a demanding job. We urgently need a hands on volunteer to lead and execute the publicity program. This person must be available throughout the year leading up to the show to recommend publicity initiatives, search out and act on publicity opportunities, take part in committee meetings, and design, produce and distribute publicity materials. There is a current program that can act as a guide. Please contact me, Peter Poot, Show Chair, , or the SOOS website. 5 The Ultimate Culture Tip Revealed Since the recounting of the programme would only lose in the retelling, I decided to write up a talk given at the San Antonio AOS meeting at the end of October 2011, by the president of the Pleurothallid Alliance, Joe Parker : Draculas: Cool Growing or Just Cool Up until 1978, Draculas were included in the genus Masdevallia and only since then have the Little Dragons their own genus. The majority of Draculas will do fine if the Day temperature is 70F (21C) and does not go above 85F (28C) And the night temperature is 55F (13C) and does not go below 45F (7C) They like low light, High humidity (above 70%) And strong air movement. Not all species want it this cool. D. lotax is almost warm growing, D. rezekiana, a species with 1-2 inch flowers from Peru grows fairly warm and even warmer growing are the species D. navarrooerum and D. mopsis. Dracula vampira 'Bela Lugosi' Lourens Grobler photo from OrchidWiz Everybody wants to have the large-flowered Dracula species. The most sought after species is D. vampira. It has a cream to pale green background and black veins on the full, flat sepals, with some clones having a black overlay over part of the flower as well. The lip looks like a white to pink bracket mushroom. Some clones have a copper flush on the tails. Joe showed us pictures of the most dramatic clones such as D. vampira Bela Lugosi FCC- AOS, D. vampira Night Stripes and D. vampira Joe Parker. Joe crossed the clones Tyler and Hawk Hill and got the very flat, very rigid D. vampira Johnny Angel FCC-AOS. One of the darker forms of D. vampira is the clone Walter. Joe used it to make the highly successful sib crossing of Walter X ( Tyler x Hawk Hill ). (Unfortunately there was no CITES personnel at the show, so my husband and I could not even think about buying any of these jummy plants- needless to say we avoided the AOS benefit auction as soon as we saw that they had plants we wanted- for the same reason...) 5
Dracula chimaera from Orchidwiz Another species that is popular is D. chimaera. This species has a fixed lip. It comes in two forms: -one form has small flowers with long tails and is covered with recurved, short, dense hairs. -the other form has broader sepals, shorter tails, larger lips and generally larger flowers. An example of the second type is the clone D. chimaera Extra shown by Mr Posadae. It has very good form that holds for a few days before doing the recurving that is typical for the species. This clone has long hairs, but shorter tails. Another noteworthy clone is Reina del Mar. Our own Mario Ferrusi saw the most striking example of this species on the Tower Road near Andrea Niessen s Nursery. It had a vertical natural spread of 83cm. But when he took Andrea there to collect it for her propagation programme, someone less scrupulous than Mario had collected it... and has probably killed it by now... Many species of Dracula are variations of D. chimaera. So check the lips carefully to tell them apart. Next are a few species noteworthy for brighter than usual colours Dracula roezlii illustrated by the clone San Francisco AM-AOS has hairy flowers that look like a more slender D. vampira. The lips are more frequently pink than in vampira and are more oval, and the flowers are smaller. The veining has more of a purple to pink tone to it rather than the black of vampira. Dracula terborchii was first shown in 2000 and has fuzzy chimaera-type flowers that are redder than usual. The lip is cream with pink veins. Dracula lafleuri has the dorsal sepal merging smoothly with the lateral sepals. The surface of the sepals is covered with short stiff translucent hairs and dense dark purple dots arranged in lines along the veins. The lip is a deep cup, pink with the interior veined darker peach-pink. The next two clones of two species are yellow! Dracula hirtzii variety xanthina J&L AM-AOS has a colourful history! A customer of J&L complained to them that the plant of Dracula hirtzii she purchased did not bloom with brownspotted flowers with a white lip, but plain yellow with a white lip. When the ladies of J&L asked her if she wished to exchange it for a properly coloured clone, the customer happily agreed. The Ladies of J&L were very happy when the plant got an AM at the next show and they have been hard pressed to supply pieces of this unique plant to their clamouring, more knowledgeable customers. The plant was in bloom when my husband and I visited J&L but we could only drool over the shiny yellow flowers set off by the white lip. It had almost no hairs. When selfed the progeny is yellow too. It seems to be a good grower Dracula gorgona var. xanthina 'Colomborquideas' Lourens Grobler photo from OrchidWiz Dracula gorgona variety xanthina Colomborquideas FCC-AOS is a lovely yellow clone. The background colour of the flower is 6
white with yellow spotting on the proximal half of the sepals. Unfortunately selfing the plant does not result in yellow flowering progeny. It is thought that the character of yellow spots must be determined by two or more dominant genes and with the reshuffling of the dominant and recessive forms of the genes present in the plant, when a plant is selfed, the same combination must be very rare. Too bad, since the plant produces huge flowers for the species and it seems to be more heat tolerant than the normally coloured forms of the species. It grows well too. Some interesting breeding is being done with these yellow clones. D. gorgona variety xanthina X vampira is in flask and John Leathers has the F2 of Dracula gorgona variety xanthina in flask. Lets hope some of them will be yellow! One of the selfed seedlings of the CHM clone of D. hirtzii bloomed with all yellow flowers for J&L and they got it awarded as J&L s Gold. Another seedling shipped to Australia survived and flowered yellow. It has the clonal name of Hoodview. J&L exchanged it for a piece of their J&L s Gold. So there are now 4 clones of yellow Dracula species in existance. On the other extreme, a Dracula Raven (vampira X roezlii) produced an almost solid black clone Edgar AM-AOS. The background colour is green, the veins are black and there is a black overlay covering all but a small area just above the base of the dorsal sepal. Magnificient! Now about how various expert growers differ in their culture of this genus: South American Growers: Open air greenhouses, 90% shade. They have 45F (7C) monthly average lows, and 60F (16C)monthly average highs. Water in the morning and everything dries out by the end of the day. It is warm, but humid. These conditions match those found in Bogota, Columbia, but WE get greenhouse acclimatized plants. Joe Parker s own culture: He grows in a 18 foot by 24 foot (6m X 8m) greenhouse that has a huge tree hanging over it. The Draculas are placed under the tree shade. The temperature is never above 80F (27C) and never below 45F (7C) and it is always moist in his greenhouse because there is almost constant fog outside and misting of 5 minutes per day inside the greenhouse. John Leathers, Pacifica, CA: He uses no cooling, his plants get moderate light, since he has no tree leaning over his greenhouse. The temperature occasionally goes up to 90F (32C) on sunny summer days. He waters once a week and this means pots will get dry. His leaves are lighter than those of other growers. He has very little air movement, only two fans for his large greenhouse. Mario Ferrusi, Ontario, Canada: Normal summer high is 82F (28C) but this year it was 90F (32C). Those temperatures were at the level of the thermostats, but since the Draculas hang up high in the greenhouse, they experienced higher temperatures. Andy Phillips, San Diego, CA: For a year Andy measured and recoded the temperatures where the Draculas hang. He found the average maximum was 90F (32C)with a peak temperature of 114F (46C)!!!! So What IS important? -Good water: RO or rainwater -COOL NIGHTS, that is around 60F (16C). Nights in the 70 sf(21c) or 80 sf (27C) may kill them. But one person growing in Brooklyn, NY had several nights when temperatures were 75-79F (24-26C) and the plants survived. But the air was constantly humid -loose medium, such as loose sphagnum moss.george Strudel used sheet moss to line baskets and filled the centre with bark chips. Plants can also be mounted for maximum air at the roots, but then they have to be watered once a day. -no aphids -high humidity What was not mentioned as being important: -strong air movement if you use it, you have to water much more frequently. -fertilizing: Draculas are not heavy feeders. Joe Parker fertilizes weakly with every watering. 7
-media to be used: all types can be successful, but an exception would be fine coir, as it is too dense. (I presume rockwool is too dense too.) -repotting: repot every 18 months for a 3 inch (7.5cm) net pot, every 5 years for a 6 inch (15cm) basket, no matter what. A Star is born.
