First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT at the Troy Softball Complex. on Twitter for in-game updates. Last Time Out The Blazers won their Conference USA series over the weekend, taking two games from No. 17 Tulsa. Both teams were 11-1 in league going into the weekend before UAB took the second game of the doubleheader, 9-7, and the series finale, 1-0. After dropping game one, 4-1, UAB struck first in the second game as sophomore second baseman Heather Pearson hit a home run in the top of the first inning. The Golden Hurricane took the lead with a tworun homer in the bottom of the second, while UAB followed with three runs in the top of the third, two scored on a double by senior third baseman Kate Armstrong and one scored as senior pinch runner Hailey Glynn ran home on an error by the Tulsa catcher to put UAB up, 4-2. Tulsa tied the game at four runs apiece in the bottom of the fourth before retaking the lead at 7-4 on a three-rbi home run by Kernen in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth inning, sophomore left fielder Amy Dennis hit a solo home run to left with one out to cut the lead to 7-5. With two down, Pearson reached on a single to center field, and was batted to third on a double by senior center fielder Whitney Fletcher. Armstrong then came up to bat and hit her second double of the game to tie the score at seven runs apiece before junior designated hitter Kristen McGrath hit the third consecutive double of the inning to score one and give UAB an 8-7 lead. UAB went on to score one more run in the top of the seventh, while senior pitcher Lauren Webster shut down Tulsa in order in the sixth and seventh innings of the 9-7 victory. The Blazers went on to win, 1-0, on Sunday and clinch both the series and first place in the C-USA standings, as K. McGrath hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. In the circle, Webster picked up the win as she threw five innings and allowed only two hits, while junior Lannah Campbell got the save as she struck out three, and got UAB out of a two-on, two-out jam in the bottom of the seventh. Scouting Troy The Trojans are on the season and have won one of their last five contests. Last time out, Troy dropped a Sun Belt Conference series at FIU, 2-1. Last Meeting UAB trails Troy in the all-time series, 12-9, but has won its last two meetings with the Trojans. A season ago, UAB won, 1-0, at home as former left fielder Catherine Crawford stole home in the bottom of the sixth frame. RPI Update In the most recent RPI poll, released on April 8, UAB is ranked at No. 32, its highest ranking in program history. The previous best was No. 33, which the 2012 squad reached on April 16. The Blazers are ranked second highest in Conference USA, with Tulsa leading the league at No. 21. On the season, UAB has picked up four wins over three teams in the RPI top-30, No. 7 Washington (Feb. 7), No. 29 Mississippi State (March 26) and No. 21 Tulsa (April 13-14). Blazers In The National Polls UAB has received votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25 for the second-consecutive week. In the poll released on April 2, the Blazers picked up one vote, while the poll released on April 9 lists the squad with five votes. Winning At Home UAB is currently 10-2 on the year in games played at the UAB Softball Field, and has won eight straight, dating back to the 7-4 win over East Carolina on March 17. The longest home win streak in program history is 10 games, set in Scoring First, Scoring Often On the season, UAB is 10-0 in games where it scores in the first inning. The Blazers are 23-2 on the year when they score first, and are 21-0 when leading after the sixth inning. Down To The Last Out The Blazers have scored runs with two outs 58 times this season (39.2 percent), and Whitney Fletcher leads the team as she has driven in two-out runs 14 times. Of the last 72 runs scored by UAB dating back to the doubleheader at Alabama State on March 19 the Blazers have crossed home plate with two outs UAB Numerical Roster on the board 33 times, and 10 of those situations were batted in by Fletcher. Fletcher recorded seven two-out scores during UAB s sweep of Memphis on March 23, including three in the Blazers comeback during the top of the seventh inning of game two, where UAB won, 6-4. Each of the nine runs scored by the Blazers in the three-game series with Southern Miss (March 29-30) occurred with two outs on the board, including a three-rbi home run by Anna Kimbrell. During the Tulsa series, Kate Armstrong hit a two-rbi double with two outs in the second game (April 13), while Kristen McGrath followed with a double of her own to score one run. In the series finale (April 14), McGrath hit a two-out home run in the 1-0 win. No Base Is Safe Caitlin Attfield leads the team in stolen bases with 18 successes in 22 tries, which already puts her in the UAB top-10 all-time list for steals in a season. With her 18th stolen base occurring during the series with Southern Miss, Attfield now sits in a tie for 10th place in career steals with former Blazer Holly Krzan ( ). Lindsay Stanley ( ) owns the school record in career-stolen bases with 100. Martina Landrum set the record for stolen bases in one season in 2009, when she had 38. As a team, the Blazers have successfully stolen base 40 times in 36 games, while UAB stole 35 all of last season. Bats on Fire In the last 10 games, UAB has recorded 31 runs on 57 hits and 29 RBI with seven home runs. Also, through this stretch, the Blazers have posted shutouts of five opponents. Individually, Heather Pearson and Whitney Fletcher have posted the top two batting averages at.385 and.333, respectively. Pearson has seven run on 10 hits, including a double and a home run, while Fletcher has five runs on eight hits, two doubles, a triple, a home run and a team-leading six RBI. Going Yard UAB has hit 31 home runs on the year, which is second most in the conference behind Marshall s 36. Anna Kimbrell and Kristen McGrath lead the team with eight home runs apiece, and McGrath sits in a five-way tie for fourth place in the league in home runs hit during conference play with four. UAB s single-season record for hit by pitches is 21, set by Amanada Allen in 2008, placing Kimbrell s 19 in second. Through her career, Kimbrell has been hit 21 times, fourth most in UAB history. Andrea Rogers ( ) and Amanada Allen ( ) each have been hit 31 times in their respective careers. Outfielder Chandler Orr has been hit by pitch eight times this season, fourth most in the league. As a team, the Blazers have been hit 44 times for the second most in conference. Success in the Circle The UAB pitching staff has posted the second best ERA in the conference with a mark of The Blazers have held their opponents to a conferencebest.193 batting average, and have allowed the fewest hits at 171. The pitching staff has also allowed the fewest earned runs in the conference with 76, and have only walked 84 batters--also a top mark in C-USA. In conference action, UAB s ERA is second lowest at The Blazers pitchers have held the opposing batting average to a league-best.183, while Campbell s own mark of.168 is also top in C-USA. Streetman s opposing batting average is third best at 1.82, while Lauren Webster owns the secondlowest ERA in league action at Getting The Save Pitcher Lannah Campbell leads the Blazers with five saves on the season. Most recently, she was credited with the save as she threw the final two innings of UAB s 1-0 win over Tulsa on April 14. The single-season record for saves is seven, set by Leigh Streetman in UAB s pitching staff now holds the top-three spots in career saves, starting with Leigh Streetman s 12. Streetman picked up her first save this year when she pitched 2.1 innings in UAB s 2-0 win over UCF on March 9. Her second save of the season came in the series finale with Southern Miss on March 30, when she threw 3.0 innings and allowed no hits in the 2-0 win. Webster, who picked up her sixth career save as UAB came back to beat Memphis, 7-5, on March 23, sits alone in second place with seven, while Campbell s six career saves puts her in third place. Record Watch With five triples on the season, Whitney Fletcher is tied the single-season record for triples with Martina Landrum, who originally set the school record in Fletcher s seven career triples places her in a tie for fourth place in the all-time books with Landrum ( ) and Cliffanie Engram ( ). Catherine Crawford ( ) owns the record with 12. Kristen McGrath is nearing Mandy Lowman s ( ) school record for career home runs. Lowman hit 32 in four years, while McGrath has racked up eight so far this season for a total of 27, and currently sits in second place in the record books. McGrath has also entered the UAB top-10 alltime list in career RBI with 27 this season for a career total of 86, good for seventh place. She is five RBI away from Beth Mullins ( ) sixth-place mark of 91. Lowman s 126 RBI is UAB s top mark. Reaching 400 Head coach Marla Townsend reached 400 career wins on Friday, March 29, as UAB topped Southern Miss in a 1-0 shutout where pitcher Leigh Streetman threw her second no-hitter of the season. Streetman Named C-USA Pitcher of the Week Pitcher Leigh Streetman was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday. This marks her second career honor and the third time a UAB pitcher has been recognized this season. Streetman threw her second no-hitter of the year on March 29, as UAB topped Southern Miss, 1-0, in the conference series opener. In the game, Streetman matched her career high in strikeouts with 13 and retired the Golden Eagles in order in the second, third and seventh innings. On the weekend, Streetman led the Blazer pitching staff with 18 strikeouts in 10.0 hitless innings, and is now the only UAB pitcher to have two no-hitters in her career. Earning her second save of the season in Saturday s game, she has 12 in her career, the most of any Blazer in UAB history. Blazers Sweep C-USA Weekly Awards For their performances at Memphis, senior center fielder Whitney Fletcher and senior pitcher Lauren Webster were named Conference USA Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. It marks the second weekly honor this season for Webster and the first for Fletcher. Fletcher was also named hitter of the week twice a season ago. On the weekend, UAB swept Memphis with a pair of come-from-behind wins, followed by a runrule victory on Sunday, and Fletcher led the team with a batting average of.700. The Decatur, Ala. native, recorded six runs on seven hits, a double, triple, two home runs, seven RBI and a slugging percentage of Webster (7-2) threw a complete game and was credited with a save during UAB s weekend at Memphis. Webster threw the entire five-inning finale and recorded nine strikeouts, including three consecutive in the third inning of the 11-1 win. Streetman Throws Perfect Game Pitcher Leigh Streetman threw a perfect game as UAB topped Alabama State, 4-0, on March 19 in the second game of its doubleheader against the Hornets. Streetman recorded a season high 10 strikeouts in the game, including the top of Alabama State s lineup in the bottom of the seventh inning. In fact, Streetman struck out five of the final six batters of the game. The perfect game was UAB s first since 2006, when the Blazers defeated Alabama A&M, 8-0. Pitcher Jennifer Nelson recorded 14 strikeouts during the six-inning game. Starting With A Sweep For the third straight season and the fourth time overall, UAB has opened the C-USA schedule with a series sweep of its opponent. During the 2002 season, the Blazers took three games from former C-USA member St. Louis, March In 2011, UAB defeated then-no. 25 Houston on the road, March 12-13, en route to a 6-0 start in league play. A season ago, the Blazers took three games from Memphis at home, March 10-11, before also taking the series at Marshall on March The Blazers continued with a win in their first game of the Houston series to go 7-0 in conference play for the first time in program history. UAB On TV UAB is 2-0 in televised appearances this season, defeating UCF, 8-2, on March 10 before topping East Carolina, 2-1, at home on March 17. Both contests were televised by Fox Sports Net. Webster Named C-USA Pitcher Of The Week Senior pitcher Lauren Webster was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for her performance at the Magic City Classic. In 14 innings, the Mathews, Ala., native retired 26 batters, including 14 in the win over Murray State to match her career high for the second time this season. The win was also her third shutout of the year. For their performances over the weekend, senior catcher Anna Kimbrell, freshman shortstop Caitlin Attfield and junior first baseman Megan McGrath were named to the Magic City Classic All- Tournament Team. McGrath Named C-USA Hitter Of The Week UAB junior designated hitter Kristen McGrath was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week after hitting three home runs last weekend at the 2013 Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic, hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Tampa, Fla., native hit her first home run of the tournament during UAB s 4-3 victory over No. 16 Washington. McGrath blasted two more during the Blazers 5-3 win over Ole Miss, and drove in seven more runs throughout the three-day tournament. Through the first five games of the season, the junior has been to the plate 16 times, hit a teambest.375 and owns a.938 slugging percentage. McGrath, Armstrong Named To Paradise Classic All-Tournament Team Junior Kristen McGrath and senior Kate Armstrong of the UAB softball team were voted to the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic All- Tournament Team, event-host Hawaii announced on Sunday. McGrath hit.375 with three homeruns and seven RBI last week as the Blazers opened the 2013 season with three victories. Armstrong hit her first home run of the season to give UAB a 2-1 lead in the upset win over Washington. Starting Off Right UAB has started off the 2013 season with continued excellence in its opening games. The Green and Gold has an impressive 10-4 record in season openers after UAB s win over a ranked Washington. The Blazers only losses in season openers came in 2000 against Auburn, 2001 against Troy, 2009 against LSU and 2011 against Jacksonville State. Between 2002 and 2008 the Blazers were Blazers The 2013 squad returns 15 letterwinners and four starting position players, including Conference USA Co-Newcomer of the Year Whitney Fletcher and C-USA All-Freshman Team selection Heather Pearson. The Blazers return three pitchers from last season s 2012 NCAA Tournament team in senior Lauren Webster and juniors Lannah Campbell and Leigh Streetman. Junior Kristen McGrath returns as the squad s designated player. The Tampa, Fla. native blasted school record 14 homeruns last season, and started in 58 of 59 games in McGrath recorded a.311 batting average and a team-best 41 RBI. Senior Kate Armstrong will anchor the Blazer defense, as the Vestavia Hills, Ala., native is expected to see time at both third and first base. Also at first base will be junior Megan McGrath, who recorded 23 appearances in The Blazers welcome three newcomers to the roster in Caitlin Attfield, Kelly Britt, and Ashley Johnson. Expected to make an immediate impact, the freshman class features a shortstop in Attfield, a utility player in Britt, and a catcher in Johnson. Pearson, who played shortstop a season ago, will now move to second base. A season ago, the redshirt sophomore recorded 66 at bats and a.333 on-base percentage. Behind the plate, senior Anna Kimbrell is expected to see the most playing time at catcher after seeing limited action a season ago. C-USA Preseason Poll The Blazers have been picked to finish fourth in this season s conference race. Tulsa was picked to win the league in 2013, while Houston was chosen to finish as the runner-up and UCF rounded out the top-three. Whitney Fletcher and Kristen McGrath were voted to the 2013 All-Conference USA Preseason Softball Team by the conference s nine head coaches. Best C-USA Finish In Program History With a record of 17-7 in league play, and sweeps in three C-USA series, the Blazers finished in a program-best second place in UAB swept rival Memphis, Marshall, and Southern Miss en route to its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Third-Straight NCAA Appearance The UAB softball team achieved its third NCAA Championship bid in as many years in The Blazers received one of the tournament s 34 atlarge invitations for the third year in a row. UAB was one of four C-USA schools to compete in the NCAA tournament. C-USA regular season and tournament champion Tulsa also received a bid, as did Houston and UCF, who finished the league race in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The Blazers competed in the Knoxville Regional, and suffered a pair of losses in the doubleelimination tournament. UAB lost to Virginia Tech 4-1 before losing to regional host and then-no. 5 Tennessee Win Mark The 2012 season was the third-straight year that the Blazers earned at least 30 wins and the sixth 30-win season in UAB lore. The Blazers earned their 30th win with an 8-0 win in five innings at UTEP on April 21. In addition, UAB began conference play with a perfect 7-0 record, another first in school history. The Blazers swept back-to-back league series against then Memphis and Marshall, and won the first match in the series against Houston. All-Conference Honorees Outfielder Whitney Fletcher was named 2012 Conference USA Co-Newcomer of the Year and Heather Pearson was named to the All-Freshman Team. Mandy Lowman was named to the All-Conference USA First Team, while Whitney Fletcher, Catherine Crawford, Lannah Campbell, and Kristen McGrath earned second team honors. Additionally, Lowman and Crawford were named conference s to the all-academic team. #Team14 The 2013 season marks the 14th year of competition for UAB softball. 7 Head Coach Marla Townsend 14th Season Alabama, UAB Softball Game Notes The 2012 season was Marla Townsend s 13th at the helm of the UAB softball program and the recently-completed campaign was one to remember for the Blazers. Townsend led the Blazers to their third-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, and UAB finished in second place in league play for the first time in program history. Named UAB s first head coach on Sept. 1, 1998, Townsend has guided the program since its infancy. Since coming to UAB, Townsend has coached 40 all-conference student-athletes and has guided the Blazers to an all-time record of (.502) and Conference USA mark of (.502). UAB enjoyed one of its most successful season in school history in 2011 as the Blazers earned the program s second consecutive invitation to the NCAA Championship. UAB s win total (39) tied the most in program history set in 2002 and the 17 victories in Conference USA play surpassed the school record (15). In addition, three players were named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team, representing the most selections in program history and the most among any C-USA team in Furthermore, the Blazers began conference play with a perfect 6-0 record for the first time in school history. In 2010 the Blazers earned the program s first-ever invitation to the NCAA Championship. UAB s win total (37) marked the second-highest in school history and the 15 victories in Conference USA play tied the school record. The Blazers were never ranked lower than No. 38 in the RPI during the season. The Blazers concluded their 2009 campaign with an overall record of and placed seventh in Conference USA with an 8-16 record. The Green and Gold kicked off the season by marking a milestone at the Hawaii Paradise Classic, defeating No. 19/17 LSU 5-3. UAB s victory marked the second time in five years that the Blazers have defeated a top-25 ranked opponent. A pair of freshmen, outfielder Martina Landrum and outfielder/infielder Catherine Crawford, earned all-conference accolades. Landrum was dubbed the C-USA s 2009 Co-Newcomer of the Year, leading the conference in stolen bases, and Crawford was named to the league s all-freshman team, closing the season with a.310 batting average and Blazers Under Townsend 31 RBIs. In 2008, Townsend and her squad ended the season at (9-15 C-USA). The Blazers wrapped up their season with a first round loss to Memphis in the C-USA Tournament. But despite the loss, the Blazers continued to rewrite the record books. Pitcher Jennifer Nelson finished her career as the all-time wins and strikeouts leader. Infielder Holly Krzan also concluded her career on top, capturing the all-time records for doubles, games played, games started, total bases and walks. For Townsend and her 2007 Blazer squad, the season featured several record-breaking performances and new milestones. Townsend earned her 200th career victory in February as the Blazers won the USF The Game Tournament. UAB s success continued in March when the Blazers defeated a top 25-ranked opponent for the first time in three years, knocking off No. 18 Southern Illinois. The Blazers finished the season (10-13 C-USA), marking the third time in history that Townsend s squad has topped the 30-win plateau. Individuals on the team broke single-season records for batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, walks, fielding percentage, batters struck out, wins and ERA. The 2006 season marked the Blazers best campaign in four years as they finished overall and tied for second in Conference USA. Townsend guided her team to a 15-9 C-USA record, best in UAB s history, and received the C-USA Coach of the Year award. The Blazers earned six spots on the C-USA All-Conference teams. Krzan and Stanley took home first-team honors, while Nelson and Kayla Harris were named to the second-team. Harris, along with Andrea Rogers, also earned all-freshman honors. During the 2005 season, Townsend led the Blazers to a mark as UAB finished seventh in the conference. UAB posted 16 non-conference wins throughout the season. Stanley was named second-team all-conference while Amanda Antonovich was named to the all-freshman team. UAB had 12 players named to the Commissioner s Honor Roll and six were named NFCA All-American Scholar Athletes. The 2004 campaign saw the Blazers post at least 20 wins for the fifth season in a row and was one in which UAB claimed two tournament titles. UAB also placed two players on the all-conference team, as Beth Mullins was named to the second team and Krzan made the allfreshman squad. Year Overall C-USA H A N Totals In 2003, the Blazers posted their fourthconsecutive 20-win campaign and advanced to the Conference USA Tournament for the fourth straight season. UAB ended the year with 28 victories and posted a 6-5 win over the eighth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The victory in Norman, Okla. marked UAB s first win versus a top-25 ranked opponent and signified the program s first victory against a former NCAA Champion. The program s accomplishments did not go unnoticed as Townsend was named the C-USA Coach of the Year by a vote of her peers in the coaching community. The 2002 Blazers improved upon the momentum that they built during the regular season as UAB advanced to the championship game of the C-USA Tournament in Tampa, Fla. The Blazers success in 2002 followed a rigorous 2001 season in which UAB finished with a overall mark and ended the year as the sixth-place team in the C-USA standings (10-11 record). The Blazers led the nation in double plays turned and registered a team-high mark of 35 during the 2001 season. In UAB s inaugural season -- Townsend guided the team to a overall record and a fifth-place finish in the conference. Townsend led the Blazers to a 9-7 record against in-state competition.
