Drysdale Field (1,000 capacity) Evanston, Ill. March The First Pitch Minnesota (20-10, 3-0 Big Ten) travels to Northwestern University (14-12, 0-2) this weekend for a three-game Big Ten series. The Gophers and Wildcats kick things off on Friday at 4:00 p.m. CT, with the first pitch on Saturday slated for 1:00 p.m., and Sunday s game set for 12:05 p.m. The game on Easter Sunday will be televised live on Big Ten Network, with Eric Collins and Garland Cooper providing the call. The Gophers are overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten after sweeping a three-game series at Iowa last weekend. Minnesota opened with a 4-1 win against the Hawkeyes on Friday, and then swept both games of a Saturday doubleheader, 7-3 and Head coach Jessica Allister is in her third season at Minnesota with a record of (.594). She entered the season with 62 victories over her first two seasons, which are the most over a two-year span since Minnesota combined for 70 wins during Minnesota owns an all-time record of against NU, but the Gophers are 4-1 versus the Wildcats over the past two seasons. Last year in Evanston, Minnesota won two of three games by splitting a doubleheader and then winning the rubber match. The Gophers won the series opener, 10-2 in five innings, then dropped an 8-0 decision in six innings, before winning the final game, 6-3 in eight innings. Minnesota has combined to hit 24 home runs in its 30 games so far, after hitting 53 homers in 53 games during the 2012 season. Junior centerfielder Bree Blanchette, sophomore shortstop Tyler Walker and sophomore third baseman Kaitlyn Richardson are tied with five home runs apiece. Junior right-handed pitcher Sara Moulton was ranked among the top 25 for victories (6th), shutouts (6th), earned run average (10th) and hits allowed per seven innings (22nd) in this week s NCAA stats. For the season, Moulton is 17-6 with a 1.14 ERA, 15 complete games, and 174 strikeouts in IP. Tyler Walker and Kaitlyn Richardson each have impressive numbers over the past five weekends. Richardson is batting.484 (30-for-62) with 14 R, 17 RBI, five doubles and three HRs, while Walker is batting.451 (32-for-71) with 24 runs scored, 14 RBI, six doubles, four home runs, and 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Nebraska was the top Big Ten team in the rankings at No. 17, followed by Michigan at No. 18, Wisconsin at No. 21, Iowa at No. 25, and the Gophers. Those five were the only Big Ten teams among the Top 50. The Gophers also received votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll on Tuesday. Closing in On No. 2,000 Minnesota s softball program, which began during the 1974 season, is scheduled to play its 2,000th all-time game during the first game of the home-opening series against Wisconsin on Friday, April 5. Minnesota has a proud history of success in softball, as it sports an all-time record of 1,125 wins, 867 losses and four ties in its 40th season of intercollegiate play. Richardson Among Top 10 Sophomore third baseman Kaitlyn Richardson is tied for tenth nationally with her.471 (41-for-87) batting average, and her.561 on base percentage ranks second in the Big Ten and 15th nationally. Last year, Richardson had 54 hits in 53 games for the Gophers. This year, she already has 41 hits in just 30 games. Richardson has some impressive numbers, among them a.488 (39-for-80) batting average against righthanded pitchers. She also has come up with an RBI nine times in 14 opportunities (64.3 percent) with a runner on third and less than two outs. Blanchette is Driving Em In Junior center fielder Bree Blanchette ranks third on the team with 17 runs batted in this season, which is just one shy of the 18 RBI she had last season. Blanchette is tied for the team lead with six multiple- RBI games, while also topping the team with nine twoout runs batted in this season. Blanchette is tied with Kaitlyn Richardson and Tyler Walker for the team lead in home runs, as all three players have five. Last year, Blanchette hit just three home runs in 53 games. Nothing Bad About Stealing...a Base Minnesota is among the top teams in the country when it comes to stolen bases. The Gophers have swiped 56 bases in 65 attempts this season, while Minnesota s opponents are just 14-for-19 in stolen bases. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Walker leads the team with 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts, while junior center fielder Bree Blanchette is 12-for-13 and sophomore left fielder Erica Meyer is 10-for-10. Dorle s Bat Heating Up Senior catcher Kari Dorle is batting.234 for the season, but her bat has been heating up in recent weeks. Since March 1, Dorle is batting.311 (14-for-45) with five doubles, two home runs, and 17 runs batted in. She leads the Gophers with nine sacrifice hits during that time, and she s 4-for-5 with the bases loaded. Youth Abounds Minnesota s 2013 roster includes 18 players, of which 13 are underclassmen. The Gophers have three seniors (Alex Davis, Kari Dorle, Kelsey Klucas) and a pair of juniors (Bree Blanchette, Sara Moulton). The underclassmen include seven sophomores and six freshmen. 30-Something Minnesota recorded 31 wins in each of head coach Jessica Allister s first two seasons with the Gophers. It s the first time Minnesota has won 30-plus games in back-to-back seasons since going in 2003, followed by a campaign in The last time the Gophers reached 40 or more wins was during the 1999 season, when Minnesota finished overall and 16-8 in the Big Ten for second place. Power Surge, Continued Minnesota opened eyes, both around the Big Ten and nationally in 2012, as the Gophers combined for a school-record 53 home runs to lead the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers were led by Kari Dorle and Kaitlyn Richardson, who each hit 10 home runs to become the first Minnesota teammates to hit double-digit round-trippers since Tyler Walker added nine homers, and Erica Meyer hit seven, while four other players had at least three HRs. An impressive 52 of the 53 home runs were hit by players who returned to the team this season, and Minnesota has hit 24 HRs in 30 games so far this season. Walking the Line Minnesota showed patience and discipline last season by drawing a conference-best 213 walks (4.02 per game). Kari Dorle (36) and Kaitlyn Richardson (32) led the team, while Alex Davis drew 30 walks. So far this season, the Gophers have drawn 96 walks in 30 games (3.20 per game), with Dorle (13) and Richardson (13) once again leading the team. Pitching and What? Defense! The old adage claims that pitching and defense will win games. Minnesota has one of the best hurlers in the nation in junior right-hander Sara Moulton (17-6, 1.14 ERA, 174 Ks), and the defense that plays behind Moulton in owns a.964 fielding percentage. Last year s team led the Big Ten with a.971 fielding percentage and just 46 errors. Running on Dorle Ends Poorly Senior catcher Kari Dorle led the Big Ten in 2012 by throwing out 14 runners who attempted to steal a base. For the season, Dorle allowed just 27 stolen bases in 41 attempts, and she allowed just three passed balls. So far this season, Dorle has thrown out five runners on the basepaths. NOT Stuck in Neutral Minnesota was 10-6 at home last season, but where the Golden Gophers really performed well was at neutral sites, where they won 17 of 20 games. Minnesota won its first 15 neutral-site games in 2012, with its lone losses during that 15-4 start to the season coming at the hands of the host schools at the first four tournaments it played. This year s team is 8-4 in true road games and 12-6 in neutral site games. Challenging the Best The Gophers 2013 schedule includes 11 games against teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in this week s ESPN.com/USA Softball or USA Today/NFCA Top 25 polls. So far this season, Minnesota is 0-4 against the Top 25, but the Gophers took No. 18/19 Stanford to extra innings on March 8 before falling by only two runs on March 9. The highest-ranked team on the schedule is No. 2/2 Arizona State, which defeated Minnesota 8-0 on Feb. 17. Gophers From All Over The 18 players on Minnesota s 2013 roster come from a total of seven different states. Eleven players are from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, while two (Alex Davis, Tyler Walker) are from California, Kaitlyn Richardson is from Arizona, Kelsey Kimminau is from Colorado, Hannah Granger is from Illinois, Brandi Mc- Gregor is from Georgia, and Erika Smyth is from Washington. Award-Winning Hurler Junior pitcher Sara Moulton was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on three occasions last season, and has already been named the conference s Pitcher of the Week twice this year. Over the past five weekends, Moulton has made starts in 17 games, going 14-2 with a 0.97 ERA and a pair of no-hitters. She has allowed just 61 hits in IP, while striking out 127 and walking just 21. She has thrown five shutouts, and batters have hit just.157 against her in those games. Smart Gophers Minnesota s success extends beyond the softball field, as the team has fared very well in the classroom, too. For the fifth consecutive semester, the team achieved a term grade point average of greater than 3.00, as it combined for a GPA for the recently-completed fall semester. An impressive total of four players senior Kelsey Klucas, junior Bree Blanchette, and sophomores Erica Meyer and Kaitlyn Richardson -- led the way with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Overall, Minnesota s cumulative team GPA stands at 3.223, which ranks seventh-best among Minnesota s 25 varsity sports. Been There, Done That Minnesota s coaching staff of third-year head coach Jessica Allister and assistants Jessica Merchant and Piper Ritter have been there, done that when it comes to collegiate softball excellence. Allister was an All-America catcher who led Stanford to a pair of NCAA Women s College World Series appearances as a player. Prior to taking over the Minnesota program, Allister was an assistant coach who helped Georgia, Stanford and Oregon reach Super Regionals. Well known in Big Ten circles, Merchant was an All- America shortstop for Michigan who captained the 2005 Wolverines to the school s first-ever NCAA title. Prior to joining the staff at Minnesota, she helped lead UMass to four-straight NCAA Tournaments. Ritter is in her seventh year with the Gophers after a standout career in the circle. She earned All-Big Ten accolades all four years and is Minnesota s all-time leader in several categories, including strikeouts (1,122), while leading the Gophers to NCAA Regional appearances in 2002 and GopherSports.com 3
